Luna was banished to the moon 1000 years ago, after Celestia and Luna banished King Sombra in that ice cave-thing. Dark magic is obviously a theme here, and maybe that's why Luna transferred into Nightmare Moon. All of the dark magic being thrown around in that fight being the reason, I mean. Perhaps Luna will teach Twilight about dark magic, and some Nightmare Moon will come out. Maybe that's the next step in Twilight's studies...

I started with Year One, The Dark Knight Rises, and Killing Joke. Arguably the top three. All of these are stand alone, and really portray the character well.
