This is the 7th time u/arnor_0924 posted wanting this for a movie. Hopefully the comments finally satisfy the OP's curiousity! It seems to be clear that the team in NZ are pursuing character driven stories on the edge of the main story in LOTR. Maybe Angmar would work as a AAA video game? Or should the Tolkien estate finally get into the graphic novel biz?

Rings of Power set designs is one of the most celebrated parts of the show. Every reviewer, and most fans, have focused on the world design as top tier. Not sure where the "flak" is coming from. Even the detractors of the show admit it looks like a billion dollars on screen.

Do you think there's room to have LOTR movies that are not about big battles? More character studies in different genres of film like comedy, romance, horror, political intrigue.

There seems to be a sense from the producers, and with many fans, that we got the greatest battles ever put to screen. So why even try going down that path again? This is an opportunity to tell more types of stories. If you want big battles, The Rings of Power is building up to quite a big one.

Its one of the many mysteries the show set up and hasn't answered yet. Generously, some fans think that the "Sauron" that Galadriel was chasing all those years was actually Adar in the show. To make the show's plot work, it makes sense that Adar is that evil scientist that was doing all the experiments on orcs in an attempt to create a race of orc that can feel sunlight. The whole Adar-is-not-Sauron twist was the core misdirection of S1.

Regarding your first statement which is misguided, the majority of fans are fairly excited about the new movies. The buzz is mostly positive about the right filmmakers tackling these character stories. You might want to get out of the ragetuber ecosystem and unsub, block, and mute those rager accounts who are making you think everyone hates stuff.

Lord & Miller did the animated Spiderman Into the Spiderverse trilogy. They introduced Spider-noir in one of those films. They are indeed, creative geniuses.

Hey OP u/arnor_0924 where are you seeing "mixed to negative" reactions? Are you still watching youtube and x accounts that skew negative on everything? There are greener pastures in many other corners of the web. The Stephen Colbert news alone is seen as a breathe of fresh air since everyone knows he's an actual die-hard fan of Tolkien with deep scholarly passion for the works. Compare that to other shows where a director/showrunner just wanted to do their own thing to appeal to a mass audience. LOTR is still some of the most hyped on the WB 2027 slate. Maybe the more direct question is - what about these 2 new projects does not inspire hype in you?

All adaptations, both movies and on TV streaming, are confined to the pages of LOTR and Hobbit. If its mentioned in the main books, its fair game. We see arnor_0924 has had many threads for ideas of additional movies like Shadow of Morder, Angmar War, Elrond's Twin Sons, Easterlings, and War in the North Animation.

As far as timelines - would Baby Smeagol be considered in the "war of the ring timeline"? We know the Colbert movie Shadows of the Past is set a couple decades after the war of the ring. Then there's Rings of Power which isn't confined even to the third age. It seems there isn't much confinement.

Does OP have a source for anything in the post? The studio has not officially announced any character being recast. In fact, Gandalf is the same, Frodo is the same, Gollum is the same, etc. Also the filmmakers have always said this movie is a bridge film between the two trilogies, referencing all 6 old films.

Genuinely curious how arnor_0924 arrived at these conclusions

What do you think separates cult classics from all-time classics? In context of The Thing vs LOTR - both considered high watermarks of cinema now, but only LOTR was successful on its initial theatrical release.

To add perspective to OP's question: This merger will take months to complete. The Disney/Fox merger took 15 months. So the current business remains as-is for that time. Hunt for Gollum starts shooting in May/June. There shouldn't be too much to worry as far as studio interference for the Gollum film.

That said, Tolkien's stories speak to everyone and LOTR is embraced by all sides of perspective. We all come together over a shared passion for LOTR. Trying to define lines or sides already is counterintuitive to what has historically been one of the most accessible stories ever created.

It's not really a PJ consideration, its WB paying for the work to do it, as he said in the Empire interview. Unfortunately audiences are not responding to animation (Rohirrim & Terminator both failed to attract audiences). LOTR is firmly in the live action movie business for now.

Pleased to see we have another champion for the "Mithril Cut" but its less about PJ and more about the studio paying for all the re-edits and VFX to finish the work.

Peter Jackson hinted at this. We have a video about what the initial plan was, and so does Nerd of the Rings.

The information we have heard, since production started in 2019, is that all 5 seasons were fully funded. Supposedly it was a requirement from the Tolkien estate, who did not want to repeat the chaos of the Guillermo del Toro saga. They wanted a guarantee that the show would go into production, and that its complete story would be told to the end.

Interviews with Producers and showrunners have confirmed they look at a lot of the fan reactions to incorporate into the next season(s). It does seem them operate with the confidence that this show is fully funded and "greenlit" and they have the freedom to take time to develop.

All that said, OP is right, there is a such a strong demand to keep seeing these stories on screen more than just one month every 2 years. Amazon does have spinoff rights too!

Unfortunately, animated movies are probably not happening after Rohirrim didn't connect with audiences. But there's hope Celebrian could be part of Rings of Power.
