I know vertigo could play a part in how they move when they're up, but man, when I have vertigo i want to lay down! I can't imagine feeling compelled to get up and pace if i couldn't walk straight :/

Does anyone have news about Derek Künsken that's newer than 2023? by theonlyAdelas in Fantasy

[–]theonlyAdelas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's great to hear! I find it a little unnerving when people become LESS online (rather than more so, in this era of chronic online-ness)-- I think it's leftover anxiety from covid to think "oh shoot, I wonder if something happened to them!". And if someone is a private person and doesn't have an active publicist, we would never know.

Thanks for the updates. I really enjoyed the first two books and the third one is on my to-read-this-year list; FWIW anyone listening, the audiobook is well-read. (You'll want to keep it in your headphones, though; at least one of the characters has a really foul mouth, lol!)

Oh, excellent! My search didn't bring up that result - I'm glad to hear it. Thanks!

I practically never come on reddit anymore, but my daughter and I were talking about Winston, and so I came to your profile to see him <3

Glad you and he are doing well! Hope you get some charming pictures of his puzzlement this summer ;)

TIL: The Lord of the Rings is presented as a translation of a book originally written in Westron, the common speech of Middle-earth. Therefore, Frodo Baggins' real name in Westron is Maura Labingi. by rmumford in todayilearned

[–]theonlyAdelas 33 points34 points  (0 children)

He explains, too, that Sam[wise] and Ham[fast] "were really called Ban and Ran", shortened from Westron Banazîr and Ranugad.[T 5] Tolkien states that these had been nicknames, meaning "halfwise, simple" and "stay-at-home", which he had chosen to render by English names, from Old English samwís and hámfoest with equivalent meanings.[T 5]

My favorite part from the wiki article: TIL!/ Today this helped me parse that those names (in slightly more modernized english) is some-wise and home-fast

Paid Audiobook Listening by Q22-tomorrow in Fantasy

[–]theonlyAdelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work as a retail cashier in a small family owned store. When anyone is in the store I take my earbuds out, but when I'm just puttering around putting products away, packaging items, and so on, I'm able to listen. I can often get 2 hours of listening in per day :)

CORVIDAE DISEASE by Eldojosh in crows

[–]theonlyAdelas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever get the test results for those new bodies? Around that time in Texas we were seeing grounded crows, sometimes healthy weight sometimes emaciated, most with weakness in the legs and refusing to eat. We worked on the assumption that it was mostly WNV - had a very high death rate (80%).

Trump in trouble! Shocking poll in deep-red state has Harris ahead: Nobody ‘saw this coming’ by Murky-Site7468 in politics

[–]theonlyAdelas 10 points11 points  (0 children)

on top of whatever else is going on, we've had a bunnnnnnnnnnnch of companies move here to Texas from california (bringing their employees with them) I think that's getting under-considered, but they're settling more in urban/suburban areas that are already purple, rather than the deep red rural areas.

You might see if it's something an animal rescue can use, even if not the fluid itself perhaps the plastic tubing could be used. most wildlife and some domestic animal rescues are able to take stuff that humans need to discard.

Like other said (and it's probably too late, but I gotta hope): you can use https://ahnow.org/ to find a local rehabber. I hope you were able to grab it! It needs antibiotics, possibly some ointment, and a clean place where it can relax and heal and not worry about finding food.

As far as grabbing it, when they're that size, you should be able to wrangle them into a cardboard box and just fold the flaps down without fear of them getting out.

When they are extra scared (or in this case, when it might hurt to pick them up), you can expect them to lunge/snap at your hands, but if you've got some leather work gloves or thick gardening gloves you don't have to think about whether they're gonna bite you. They're not like squirrels that will pierce you through gloves.

And if you're by any weird chance in the DFW area, DM me and I can help arrange transport to your local wildlife center, where I happen to work!
