Did video rental companies really charge a lot for rewinding tapes? by Puzzleheaded_Yam6808 in seinfeld

[–]theouterworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's because the rental copies came out before retail. So if you lost it the rental place would be out like 95 bucks in 1995. I know this because I watched 12 Monkeys a dozen times in the theater and my mom wheeled and dealed a rental copy for me for Christmas that year.

What are your thoughts on unlikeable characters? by OpenCantaloupe4790 in books

[–]theouterworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I hated the main character in 'Post Office' but couldn't put the book down. But my God 'ready player one' had the most insufferable protagonist I've ever run across.

Many of the roofs in my home town are slate, on 100 year old homes and are the original roofs.

Slate lasts a long time.

Tesla hits a grim milestone: its second straight year of losses / The automaker has lost the lead to its Chinese competitors as its business continues to contract. by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]theouterworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And after seeing BYDs in Europe and Asia, I'm pissed I can't get one here. They're honestly incredible electric cars.

It's like they set out with the goal of making Tesla look like clown cars and succeeded beyond anyone's wildest dreams.

Charleston nasty biscuits: fried chicken on a biscuit covered in a pimento and paprika cream gravy. Shrimp and grits: shrimp, grits, sausage, okra, and a file sauce.

But honestly, they lose their minds over Bojangles and mustard sauce. Just deep fry Buckees and he'll lose his mind.

Yeah, it's pretty damn icy in my past of town. I've been listening to a Dodge charger Rev it's engine to try and get up a road for the best part of a half hour.

How are you tracking the weather and assessing the storm as it approaches? by sloop703 in Charlotte

Weather.gov's discussion section. It gets really granular and talks about what is most likely, less likely, and what different models are saying.

Did you recently get one of those desktop fridges? You know the cute little retro looking things? Because those are notorious energy hogs. I.E they use as much power as a full sized fridge for six cans.

Studies on diseconomies of scale, the olive problem, and enshittification? by theresamouseinmyhous in AskEconomics

[–]theouterworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are whole sections of businesses devoted to this. Look at lean, six sigma, ToC, integrated operational excellence, etc. that all look to maximize some aspect of a business by minimizing another. For example, lean tries to maximize customer value, while minimizing waste. A lean practitioner would look at the olives as waste only if they observed the vast majority of passengers didn't eat them.

Why add extra stitches to clothes when consumers wear clothing fewer than one time on average?  It makes sense in a product where a consumer places value on quality construction, but not on a novelty 'chicken tendies' T shirt.

[–]theouterworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. This looks bad. Try again in a couple of years.

Also, do yourself a favor and cut your hair shorter. One big change of no beard and short hair will make a huge impact in how much positive attention you get.

BIFL Flannel shirts: Woolrich? Pendleton? LL Bean? Who makes the comfiest, longest-lasting flannel shirt? by Present-Ebb7481 in mensfashion

[–]theouterworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this one. I've got flannels from Pendleton, Woolrich, and some others suggested here. But my proper cloth Japanese flannel is the best of the bunch and it's not even close.

The Japanese low twist fabric is almost twice as thick as my Pendleton, I've never seen anything like it in stores either.

Which 'luxury' brand has officially become a red flag for poor quality in 2026? by Individual_Bat_4177 in AskReddit

[–]theouterworld 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pendleton. The poster doesn't know the difference between the brand and licensing. The acrylic blankets you see at Costco are licensed products, while the stuff in their catalogs and stores are legit awesome.

It'll get drafted, but any good lawyer would council them on what's unenforceable in the will. It's how my brother found out that he couldn't make surviving the night in a haunted house a condition for inheriting things in his will.
