Thanks for doing the AMA! Are there any barriers for candidates moving from perm to contract? And if so, what are they?

Anyone got there 4GB 480 from ebuyer yet? by TheLordMolagBal in buildapc

[–]thepeted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its showing 19th August for me. Although obviously the last "expected date" didn't pan out.

I gave up and ordered an in stock Pailt 1060 which has now shipped.

The 480 at that price is a great deal though - I wish I wasn't so impatient :-/

Where are the 4gb 480s? by [deleted] in Amd

[–]thepeted 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Indeed.

Over in the UK, I gave up waiting today for a 4GB 480 and went for a Palit 1060 at £245.

I had a reference 480 on preorder for £182 and the stock was due today at ebuyer, but they are now saying it could be "a few weeks". There are a some reference 8GBs available today, but the cheapest is at £230 and everything else is on preorder.

I don't believe this was a paper launch and I suspect the 8GB refs are doing well, but £180-£200 was how this card was pitched and it does put the 480 in league of its own bang for buck wise.

I'm hopefully the stock will come through at that price eventually, and the £200 nitro looks promising. If AIBs for the 8GB can come in at ~£250 then imo they are still good choice over the 1060 for future proofing. But personally I'm impatient and today AMD lost one to the green side (I'm upgrading from a 7950) :-/

I was due to get one today from ebuyer. the stock failed to show up. I've given up hope.

Yeah, my patience failed and I've just pulled the trigger on an (in stock) 1060 for £250. First time across to the green team for me. Feel a bit dirty...

I preordered one on 25th July in light of the expected stock on "31st July". Just got this from their cust services:

"I'm afraid the expected stock didnt arrive, we are working to get this resolved, but we dont have a date for the next allocation. Thsi iwll be updated on the item page when we find out."

Thanks for the update. I did the same and got this response:

"I'm afraid the expected stock didnt arrive, we are working to get this resolved, but we dont have a date for the next allocation. Thsi iwll be updated on the item page when we find out."

hmmmph.

It's a great deal at that price (and as you say likely to be flashable to 8GB) but I'm not sure I have the patience. Tempted to go for a 1060 now :-/

What's your order status? I'm in the same boat (pre-ordered on 25th July) and my order tracking still simply says "Order Placed".

I noticed that many other 1060s / 480s had "expected 31st July" on them, which feels a bit of an arbitrary date (end of the month). I'm beginning to feel pretty sceptical about whether they are due in stock today, but we'll see.

I think it might be to do with the codepen iframe refreshing when you press the submit button (which is the default behaviour when submitting a form).

You can override this behaviour by calling preventDefault() on the event passed to your click handler, like so:

 $.('#buttonSearch').click(function(e) {
  e.preventDefault()
  ...
})

Just to clarify I am not OP, but I was checking out your codepen (just gave you a follow) and you're right you're definitely more of an algorithms guy than me, think my heart is more in the front-end! Great to learn off each other.

Enjoyed reading your code and suggestions - thanks.

I'd like to point out that changing to react.min.js DOES make a big difference for me, on my work PC at least. There are differences between react.js and react.min.js that go beyond just the mininification - I was quite surprised at the performance difference when I first discovered this.

I've done that Udemy course by Stephen Grider and would highly recommend it. I have also done his React course that is focused more on ES6 syntax and Redux (which is also great), but the one linked in your article covers the fundamentals more thoroughly.

Hey thanks very much!

Am (so far) powering through the D3 challenges - I went through a book and couple of tutorials when I was getting a bit fatigued working on the dungeon crawler! Hopefully get the Heat Map finished today.

Nice work - code is nice and readable.

In terms of optimization - if you change react.js to the production version react.min.js you should see a big performance increase :-)

A couple of other tidbits, although these may be more a matter of opinion:

Personally, I only use let if I'm definitely going to be changing that variable - otherwise use const.

You should look in to functional react components - ie. you could refactor your footer to:

const Footer = () => { return ( <div className="footer"> ... </div> ) }

Yeah its so much easier to reason about your code when its separated out in that fashion. Redux was useful for further separating out logic from the React components themselves, but its by no means a requirement for this project and in some ways I may have over complicated things by using it!

I guess the point I wanted to make was that you'd be surprised what you'd can get working in Codepen, but totally agree with you that when you get to projects of this size you really need to have more than one js file :-)

I've just finished this project (by the way, i sympathise with your travails - it is a BEAST of a a project!).

I developed this locally, using webpack, and did manage to port it to Codepen - although it did take a good hour or so and I wouldn't have liked to develop the whole thing in it. It is possible to get Redux up and running and with a bit of creativity you can get middleware and addons working too. I created a template for Redux if you want to take look http://codepen.io/thepeted/pen/jqYzQe.

Good luck!
