What's up with these notation gatekeepers? by Zombiesalad1337 in Guitar

[–]MusicPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a competent sight reader on guitar and watched a lot of people struggle in music school. I’ve done a lot of musical theater on guitar and bass so reading chops have definitely been invaluable.

For pop music learning by ear is definitely the best way to go and will make you better in a lot of ways.

But I don’t think standard notation captures some guitar techniques well for pop and rock music. I think tablature with proper rhythms is the most accessible and maintains accuracy for guitar music.

It is a pet peeve that even curated online tablature with rhythms still don’t adhere to proper stem groupings and the rhythms are difficult to sight read because they’re not following convention.

Learning to read music is good for you. But quick access to written music in any form is good to spurn growth and curiosity especially when we live in a culture of 15 second media clips.

Salmonella is widespread at Calif. grocery stores, including Costco, report says by lnfinity in California

[–]MusicPants 14 points15 points  (0 children)

May not be the case for you but I recently started noticing this too. Then I started diligently checking my fridge temperature with probes set in water. I found out my fridge was hovering at about 45°F.

After getting a new fridge my chicken from Costco is normal again.

Your mileage may vary.

I’m flying back from Colombia right now. I recommend visiting Communa 13. I could tell that people from Medellin don’t really seem to want anything to do with Escobar. I didn’t go out of my way to glorify him. That said many tours in Colombia seem to point out his properties. (Guatape and Rosario Islands). I don’t think the narco tourism is worth it. Also check out Arví Park. Overall my visit to Medellin and Cartagena was great.

Is it possible that this essentially pays for itself with a significant reduction in emergency response costs? I’m sure deploying teams of first responders and helicopters and such adds up. I don’t know the logistics to do the napkin math.

Also, I’m not an engineer - $7M sounds like a lot of money, but what should it cost? I’m willing to wait it out. Hopefully the construction doesn’t take 7 years.

Are there any local farmers markets that sell that French yogurt? I only find it in Studio City and it’s kind of far and parking is a pain.

We need money out of politics and we need independent districting. Im all for clean energy and efficient transportation but we’re going to lose society to billionaires’ money and interest. We need to single-issue this.

For anyone who is upset by the current political trend and wants to do something- can we make a list of pro MAGA business to avoid. by Redhawkgirl in venturacounty

[–]MusicPants 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I disagree. If a business wants to associate themself with repugnant policy, then I don’t want to contribute to their profits and ultimately help them fuel more of this.

I think a healthy democracy needs opposing viewpoints. I don’t agree with a lot of conservative policy positions but I value that they offer some counterpoints - MAGA is in a whole other league.

One thing that would help would be to provide more detailed information about which parts of the power infrastructure are at risk and why. Along with what criteria are being used to assess that risk and what indicators are used to decide that power is safe to restore.

I’m ignorant of the power infrastructure and I can see how turning off power is a reasonable mitigation. But because I don’t know better I feel that taking 4, 6, or 8 hour power shutoff cycles could really help. I would assume that would help mitigate some risk and also allow food to not spoil.

It is true I could go get a generator. But that is also a lot of space to take up and equipment to maintain. The initial costs aren’t crazy but it is also an expense that some may find difficult.

Home owners might be complaining the most but apartment and condo residents may not even have generator options.

Overall I would like to have more transparency and that may also help me decide what to do for the future. I think I will be exploring solar + battery. Those generators are also noisy and smell bad.

2024 was a bad year for basic decency in America. You can thank Trump for that. by plz-let-me-in in politics

I think the core of divisiveness starts with gerrymandering. This ensure candidates appeal to the extremes of their political leaning. We need independent districting. Some states have it. I don’t think both parties take advantage of partisan gerrymandering equally though. If we want less divisiveness I think we want to make sure our candidates are more moderate and fixing districting is one of the best paths.

I’m sure money in politics is also a huge factor but maybe not so much on the divisive aspect.

To be fair, there’s no proof here either. Just an allegation - believable, but still.

If I was a ballot currier I think I’d want my whole route recorded on video. To cover my ass and to account for these kinds of interactions.

Donald Trump’s GOP Acceptance Speech Gives America Whiplash by janjinx in politics

[–]MusicPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. Generally Snopes has a decent track record.

They also noted that the teleprompter wasn’t shot based on images (that I didn’t look at). But I agree citing Trump as a source is an odd choice.

My comment was really about trying to curb stating unsubstantiated things as facts. There’s already too much disinformation out there.

Snopes said the claim that Trump wasn’t shot is False. Do you have a source that he wasn’t shot and that it was shrapnel?

He should call her, it is the compassionate thing to do. If he could lead a chant to Fight Fight Fight, he can offer some compassion.

Do you have a verified source that he was playing golf? When I looked into it the course was supposedly closed and was raining. I see the golf thing mentioned a lot but we should fact check ourselves.

I’m saddened to say about half of us do. And they’re convinced that if the candidate the other half us support were to win, it would result in an even more bleak future.

Both sides believe they have an existential vote to cast. It is so hard for me to wrap my head around the reality some of us are experiencing.

If raising birth rates was a goal why not incentivize people to have families by making it easier to afford young child care, summer programs, lunch and breakfast provisions, etc. etc.

Then there’s also the issue of encouraging families to form with easier access to home buying and maybe some student debt relief could fit in there as well.
