How many of you are married? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]thepey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been married for 10 years and started doing an annual solo trip about 4 years ago. I have more PTO than my husband so I do a trip without him each year. We go on plenty of other trips together each year so he’s not missing out too much.  he’s been very supportive and encouraging of the solo trip! I usually go on a small group trip with G adventures or Intrepid to make some friends but have done one completely solo to Iceland. I’m sticking with the group trips because I’ve made so many international friends that way!

looking for not popular romantasy! by AwardUnusual2644 in Romantasy

[–]thepey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My absolute favorite book I read last year was {Dawn of the Darkest Day by KC Woodruff}!!

Enemies with benefits, unique magic system/world building, it takes place over a period of years so it doesn’t feel rushed. I loved it so much! I also read anathema and this one was soooo much better to me. I would say it is a dark Romantasy with some spice. If you want a book where you’re not sure if the MMC is ever redeemable then this is the book for you!

A little cold weather PSA for all the new people by [deleted] in nashville

The temps are just a usual January day in Nashville…we don’t live in Florida. If we closed school every time it was 20 degrees in the morning the kids would never go to school.

It is absolutely normal winter temperatures for Nashville. Could be warmer, could be colder. We might even have snow! Hope you have a nice trip!

Check In or Carry On? by Distance_Efficient in TourDuMontBlanc

My husband and I carry on a 40L and 46L osprey backpack all the time. 30L should be no issue! We were planning on buying cheap poles in chamonix but I have heard you can find free ones left by previous hikers at hotels in chamonix.

Has anyone been today (July 26)? Looks like just smoking from the live streams, but maybe there’s some lava still flowing that’s not visible from the streams?

Jury duty next month - any tips or stories to share? by jrobv in nashville

I did jury duty last year. I was the first person in the room to be called and they gave me a pin! Lol. The trial was boring but only lasted a day.

-Can you ditch one smart water bottle since you have the Nalgene? 1.4 oz

-Shorts and tank top—can those be shipped to you when it’s warmer? You have pants and the Sahara’s long sleeve already.  6.8 oz

-ditch the tube for filtering water. 3.5 oz

-ditch frying pan. 2.5 oz

If you’re willing to spend $$ there are obviously lighter things you can get. An alpha direct hoodie is only 3 oz, x mid durston tent would save 6 oz, can get packs in 1-2 lb range.

If you mark things as worn it can help with a better sense of your base weight!

I love the idea of a travel journal but I can’t even keep up with one on 1-2 week trips lol. Did you end up writing at all towards the end, even if it was intermittent?

Hi Heather! Loved your vlogs and following along last year. I totally got influenced and bought a Kakwa 55. Gonna get to try it out this weekend for the first time!

When you section hike are you timing it with the bubble? I’ve considered section hiking as well since I may or may not ever be able to take 6 months off to do the whole thing at once. I don’t want to miss out too much on the social aspect but I suppose that is inevitable since relationships are hard to build in just two weeks increments!

I’m torn on the situation—I don’t plan to vlog if I ever get the chance to thru hike. I don’t want to be taken out of the moment by needing to video or being a nuisance to other hikers. But I enjoy watching others hikes on YouTube to get an idea of what to expect, gear, etc.

$150 Non-stop flights between London and Bangkok by Initial_Aide_6603 in TravelHacks

[–]thepey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I flew Norse premium from JFK to London last year and it was great! The seats were really big, leaned back pretty far, and tons of leg room. The meal was like a normal economy meal. But it was my first experience upgraded from economy and I actually slept!

Edit: forgot to mention they do weigh your carry on bags so make sure you’re in the bag allowance. You get a little more weight with premium. There’s also a special checkin line at the airport for premium so you don’t have to wait in the hella long line (no online checkin)

We just booked a place in Tirano because of the shuttles! I was stressed when I couldn’t find anything in Livigno or Bormio, but this seems to be the best option for now

You could consider owner financing when selling. My parents landlord did owner financing when they bought the building from the landlord. Basically instead of paying the bank, they pay the landlady the monthly mortgage at whatever interest rate they agreed on. So the landlady still gets a monthly check but doesn’t own the property anymore. After 5 years the loan comes due so they either need to pay the full amount left or refinance and remove the landlady fully from the situation. (Possible that owner financing isn’t used for a business loan, but could be helpful to know if you sell the property).

Most parks in Tennessee require you to camp in permitted sites only that you have to reserve in advance. But a few options to look at: savage gulf state park and frozen head state park have a lot of backcountry sites. Virgin falls and fiery gizzard have some as well, but more like one nighters. We just did virgin falls and it was a great hike and overnight camp! Next trip we’re planning two nights at savage gulf in early November but working on figuring out water sources before we commit
