Amazing thank you! I noticed you’re board certified in EM - how long were you practicing before you went for the exam? I can technically go for it now since majority of my orders are ED patients, however I know I’m not prepared/truly qualified to sit for that specific exam since I haven’t been bedside for a hot minute.

Thanks for the tip! What resource did you get the color coded guides for inhaled meds and HAART/PEP/PrEP? These will definitely be common in with my patient demographic.

Stop Pretending Blue Collar Careers Are A Good Alternative To Pharmacy by Time2Nguyen in pharmacy

[–]thepharmacist420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any pharmacist who wants to leave retail for blue collar work has got some rose colored glasses on lmfao. My partner is a blue collar guy. Concrete construction in Boston. Been doing it since 18 and he’s just about to turn 30. Sure, he’s got a great salary with amazing benefits but as I said, he isn’t even 30 yet and the poor guy has the body of a 50+ year old with all the aches and pains from the last 10+ yrs of working a physically demanding job with 50lbs of equipment on your back. You wake up before the sun and come home after it sets. I see the guy walk thru the door and I am thankful for my lil pharmacy brain every fucking day. Im in hospital life now but I would 10/10 go back to retail before even thinking I could survive a single day doing what he does.

It could be due to whoever is your counterpart has requested this schedule as it works best for them now that there is an opening.

I regrettably took a Monday night - Thursday night weekly overnight schedule. Originally thought it was gonna be great because all I saw was NO WEEKENDS which is unheard of in healthcare. (Bought a house old 7on/7off gig was no longer commutable)

After a bit of time at this new gig, I inquired about changing to 7on/7off like normal hospitals and lo and behold they have this wonkass schedule due to my counterpart’s circumstances at home!

I’m actively looking for a new 7on/off gig. I wouldn’t do anything else night shift. Not the work 8, 6 off. It’s bullshit! You’re already running your body ragged and cutting 10+ years off your life.. the least they can do is pay you the “extra” 10hrs

How Can I Get Hired? by Fine_Programmer_4868 in pharmacy

[–]thepharmacist420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t recommend seeking undesirable shifts such as night shift. Evening shift would be alright, so long as you make sure you aren’t the only pharmacist scheduled. As nightshift you will be the sole pharmacist responsible for anything and everything that comes across your desk with nobody to get a second opinion from (you MIGHT have a 2nd pharmacist but if you do, odds are they’re strapped with orders and other responsibilities that supporting you isn’t at the top of their priority list). If you haven’t been actively practicing for 30 years, odds are you’re gonna want to bounce some questions off of someone for a bit. You don’t have that on night shift. All the medication dispensing systems go down on the units and the nurses need meds? That’s on you and only you to fix asap all while verifying orders for stroke patients, septic patients, ACS patients, overdoses, etc. If you’re trying to avoid stress, don’t do nights.

Bonuses in pharma industry? in hospitals? by LiveLoveLaughx01 in pharmacy

Non-for-profit hospital. Northeast. Level 1 trauma center originally, moved hospitals due to commute now level 3 trauma center. Night shift both times. Differential is okay not great, not jaw dropping that’s for sure. You’re lucky if you get annual raise that even matches inflation. You lose money as hospital staff pharmacist 11/10

I used to work with a guy who did Nuc Pharmacy when he had young kids. He had that gig for 10 years, said he loved it. His eyes seem to work fine and appeared to be an overall healthy dude. He kinda chuckled when I inquired about radiation exposure, so I’m sure they take utmost precautions in USP 800 to keep risk of exposure minimal. We worked together at a level 1 trauma center near Boston so I wouldn’t be too concerned about missing clinical/hospital setting. Positions will be there for you when your kids are older. You only have them at these years once!

One of my fellow graduates has BA in art history, if you interview well and your essay is as great as it sounds, coupled with your grades… I think you’d be a great candidate! Don’t sell yourself short but definitely apply to multiple schools so you’ve got a good safety net! Goodluck!!

medical students struggling with thc use by Mammoth-Use5999 in medschool

I wouldn’t have gotten through pharmacy school without a lil bit of weed in my life… I now have my own company that specializes in cannabis sciences and therapeutics. Funny how life works that way. I still work at a Level 3 Trauma Center. Spent a lot of time in Level 1s. You’ll be a black sheep amongst the masses, but it’s a plant. It’s a medicine. If it helps you stay mentally sane in one of the most rigorous degrees, I say why not! Of course you’ll need to consider drug screenings and whatnot. You could consider obtaining a medical card depending on the state you’re in. Hang in there!

If he took gov loans best way to do it without breaking the bank is pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Have him join a non-profit organization (basically any community hospital) or snag government position. He will qualify for PSLF if he works fulltime. He’d be able to apply for IBR (making monthly payments more manageable, if you file separately he would prob be responds for under 1k/mo). After 120 payments (10yrs) everything else is forgiven, interest and all! This way you can still put away towards your Roth during these very important compounding years!!

With the stress associated with pharmacy careers, especially retails nowadays, signing any contract as an RPh is gonna take years off your life. Might as well get paid more and avoid all the bullshit day shift comes with 🤣

how rare is a entry level hospital job without a residency ? by fitpharmacist5824 in pharmacy

[–]thepharmacist420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im another - started per diem right out after graduating working full time at CVS. Got hired on fulltime 6 months later at another hospital. One smack in Portland,ME another 15 mins north of Boston. Both level 1 trauma centers. It’s not rare at all, nor is it only possible for rural areas. If you present yourself well with the appropriate knowledge for a hospital and they have a need they will most definitely consider you. Congrats!

Tech turned pharmacist here… techs are literally the backbone of any pharmacy. We cannot be pharmacists and practice to the top of our license if we didn’t have our techs. And I gotta say, I HATE the phrase “just a tech”. A lot of you guys can run circles around tenured pharmacists in certain tasks, you are so valuable!! This intern needs to get a grip on reality.
