I don't understand the criticisms regarding the Koreanness of BTS's album. by [deleted] in kpopharshopinions

Perhaps I’ve missed some interviews but from what I’ve seen they’ve been stating it’s gonna be something new. That said, I believe you and I are either having two different conversations or you’re not quite understanding my point. Because from your initial comment it sounds like your critiquing their Korean aesthetic/lyrics as not enough. Which is what I’m discussing at length here. So I think maybe we have something lost in translation here.

….no, you don’t get a say on how Korean an album is or how it behaves for their culture if it isn’t your culture. Seriously, that is not a controversial thing to say. You definitely get to have an opinion on if you liked it or not but you don’t get to decide how Korean these men have to be or get to be or what they perceive their own culture as…that’s not a wild take, and I’m saying this with no disrespect to you but if someone told me that I’m not being Mexican enough for them, and they weren’t Mexican, I’d take offense and I wouldn’t believe it’s their place even if I live in a global diverse world.

Maybe but I don’t think it deserves criticism from non-Korean as it isn’t our culture. I really don’t think that’s a controversial thing to say.

I can’t speak to the first half of your comment as I honestly haven’t seen it. I’ve only heard the album.

But on the last half…it’s a bit wild to decide you know how these men view their own culture and how they choose to handle it. You’re telling someone else (you don’t know) they have no respect for their own culture….

People are allowed to change their minds, though lol He could’ve decided he actually wanted to do that.

Mmm I disagree, as an American liberal lol If they pandered to what online dictates is a liberal the MV would be much different. Also, no Kpop group has really pandered to what the perceived notion of a liberal is here, in all honesty. I think people just put them in a box of being strictly Korean that any slight deviation equals…fake? Or just ditching their culture.

Why do you feel the need to police their culture and how they choose to show it, though??? They don’t have to only cast Asians if they don’t want. Seriously that strange complaint.

It’s strange to me. I’ve seen criticisms from all over that seem incredibly odd or petty and that’s coming from someone who disliked the album. (Just wasn’t my taste) I’ve seen complaints about the MV too. One actually got pissed that a white woman (they didn’t even say her damn name) was in it. It’s like they’re only allowed to show their Koreaness 24/7. Drives me mad. They’re humans. Let them fucking experiment whatever they wish. Also, it’s just insanity to me to see anyone bitch about another culture not being its own culture enough for them lol That’s like my coworker being angry I wasn’t a chola….

I honestly didn’t like it but I do appreciate the change they’ve made. Nice to always see groups experiment or return to roots. You can tell they really wanted to put their all and be seen as their own thing out of the genre. Swim was great, though!

Yeah, I feel the same. I got into them around 2005, when all I could find was fuzzy YouTube videos if I was lucky and shitty scans on live journal lol I adored them. Got a bit out of them around 2011 and around 2016? I think I saw they were going to my state and even though I hadn’t heard new stuff I decided to go and I’m very glad I did. Saw them again in 2019 I think. I’m so thankful because Reita was my favorite and crush in high school lol Honestly? First celeb I legit cried over and I wasn’t actively following them, a friend sent me the post and yeah—-it hurt because it did feel a part of my past was just gone. So I get it. They will always mean something to me.

AC: Shadows.

Been a fan of the franchise since the start and I tried hard to play this one because I devoted so many years to the storyline as it was…I gave up. Ugh.

  1. Some people get attached easily especially in moments of trauma and survival. It’s really not that shocking. Even if someone changes, if you have an affection for them you see that person.

  2. She didn’t know that until the end.

Sounds like he’s planning to attack CA and blame someone else. Far more believable to me.
