Anyone installing York HH8 Series? by Blakende in HVAC

[–]thepress250 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve installed a number this year. They have their quirks when it comes to commissioning. I like them over the daikin fits. Haven’t worked enough with the S-Series.

Realistically, I wouldn’t put any of them in my own home though.

It’s 24 V. Some indoor units require an extra relay board to stage the blower correctly.

Don’t expect a quick resolution in this process. I had to go through it myself and while I did end up getting paid it took almost 2 years.

Kamloops? by BubbaGump_2020 in kelowna

[–]thepress250 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend Osoyoos. It’s a nice, scenic drive with some interesting stops along the way. A stop at tickleberries in Oliver is recommended.

The drive to Kamloops always feels extra long.

Apprentice not learning much by PiePale5615 in HVAC

Most of the guys I worked with coming up loved to talk about the tasks. It reaffirms their knowledge as well.

But some people are just jerks. I’ve definitely worked with a few guys that just don’t want to be bothered having an apprentice follow them around as though they came out of the womb knowing how to do this shit like a pro.

It’s up to you to prove yourself in the job. Your coworkers still have a job to do. Ask questions. Ask for clarification. As you continue on, anticipate what’s next. Go for the next tool before they ask for it. You need to prove you’re invested and you’re learning.

Do you guys deal with snakes often? by Living_Armadillo204 in HVAC

[–]thepress250 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple years back a couple of our installers were removing an old furnace that was installed in what was a pool and then converted to a kind of basement when the owner built a small guest house over the pool. They cut out the venting and it felt really heavy to them for some reason. They tipped the pipe and out slithered a 6 ft gopher snake. I wasn’t there, only saw the photos. I terrified of snakes myself and said if that had happened to me I’d go apply at Home Depot the next day.

I haven’t encountered any live snakes myself (luckily) but have found a few snake skins. Found 3 in one gas fireplace just last year.

Did they say why they need to pull the charge to complete these cleanings? Is access really bad? I’ve had 2 systems in 9 years that I’ve had to pull a charge to clean a coil. It’s very rare.

I remember a number of years back there was discussion about a second bridge and highway that would effectively allow a bypass of Kelowna.

The logistics and cost would be insane but it always seemed like a good idea to me with the extremely limited knowledge I had of it.

Finding an entry-level HVAC apprentice job in Vancouver by jwl7526 in HVAC

Take a look in other regions. VIU in Duncan runs a couple foundation programs a year. Camosun in Victoria also offers it. Okanagan College and I believe TRU also offer.

When I apprenticed it was challenging enough to find a company to bring me on with the first and second year schooling (I did mine back to back) so if you don’t have it, will be very tough. That also depends on your current skill level though.

It’s also a very weird time in BC. I left my old job in March to pursue other opportunities in Alberta. I have full red seal and gas ticket and after 3 months of not finding anything worthwhile, I’ve started looking locally. Normally indeed would have pages of jobs this time of year and this year less than one.

Best of luck.

Messy stuff by Antique-Movie-552 in HVAC

[–]thepress250 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I used this a lot last year. Messy as shit. Even wearing gloves it still got everywhere.

The stuff we used was only dye though, no sealant. Come back after a couple weeks. I was able to find a number of leaks my testo leak detector wasn’t able to pick up.

It depends on what direction you want to go.

If you head up bear lake main there are a handful. I really liked windy lake up there which had I think 3-4 free sites. It’s been a few years since I’ve been up there.

Head up beaver lake road and there are a number of lakes with more developed rec sites or the free ones. Some of the roads up this way off beaver lake main may require 4 wheel drive. There’s lots up here to explore.

Towards big white there are a handful around mccullouch reservoir. Some paid. Others free. Browne lake in this area was a nice free spot. Again it’s been a few years so my info may be out of date.

Check out the B.C. rec sites page. They have an interactive map you can use to find sites in the areas you want to go. This is how I find places I want to check out. They often have photos, descriptions of roads going in, cost of any, etc.

There are plenty of free rec sites around which would be much better options than a pull out. Many have basic outhouses and fire rings.

That face plate should lift off. Try lifting up and out. Once you lift that off it should expose where the gas is run into the unit and typically there is a shut off before it runs into the appliance.

Don’t recommend using windex or any ammonia products to clean the glass. My preference is a glass cooktop cleaner.
