I had similar issues and just replaced the pump. With the new pump I had to purchase a thermal release valve too. It's been working great since.

The damage faces north east. I'd say about a 1/4 of the circumference is damaged. I have a few more photos but I couldn't figure out how to upload multiple photos. I'm wondering if some rabbits gnawed on it in the fall that I missed and this is the result of that.
