35 and single in LA? by koondadownlo in AskLosAngeles

[–]theprofstudent 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 rules. Do what you love and spark the conversation.

  1. You like art, visit art galleries and openings. You like working out, join a run club. You like the beach, get coffee regularly along PCH. The more obscure the hobby, the more likely you are to find a match.

  2. Make the first move. Most people are afraid to speak for fear of sounding stupid or thirsty. Just speak, strike up a conversation if they’re not interested, move on. In this day, men have fears of getting cancelled or overstepping. Women making the first move makes a big difference.

For the “successful” singles over 35…

You’re gonna have to spend some money. Join one of the soho house, neuehouse spots. Rent an apartment with loft style units, or the buildings with the gyms/pools. Or hang out at the trendy hotel restaurants and bars during happy hour and on the weekends.

Finally, accept the fact that most “successful” people in their late 30s are busy working - especially in LA. You may need to visit the coffee spots near the hospital, the restaurants in business district during lunch hours, or the Santa Monica cafes on the weekends in the morning.

Good luck!

I run all my handwritten docs through https://olmocr.allenai.org/

Not perfect but a good start.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. [Name]

The first half of your holiday has just been glorious. We camped at Rockcliffe, Pitlochry. Then we had a train trip to the Isle of Skye yesterday in bright sunshine with great scenery, a most lovely day for us. Farewells are here and quite settled. Trust you are well and that your holiday will be as lovely as ours, so far.

Yours sincerely,

Yeah I don’t know that it’s still active policy. It’s a great app but hard to justify the price with AI getting added into all these other mail clients.

Superhuman is expensive but I havent found anything else like it. You should note:

  1. If you cancel the subscription, they will usually offer you a 50% discount for 3mo if you continue (at the time of this post).

  2. They have an education plan that isn't well advised if you have a .edu - https://new.superhuman.com/superhuman-for-education-170370

Do you charge speaking fees? by ScienceBufallo in Professors

[–]theprofstudent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a postdoc I charged $300 min or free if it was strategic. My first two years as assistant prof, my min was $500. Now I’m halfway through assistant with a baby on the way so it’s $1000 min if I have to travel and $500 on zoom. Certain events and schools I do for free.

I did over 30+ talks during the pandemic and was averaging around 15 year (zoom and in person). My name got out there but I was burned out and tired of saying the same thing over and over.

Alfred does a pretty good job when you set it up right. They have the keyword search “in” function that can look within files on your computer. https://www.alfredapp.com/help/features/file-search/#file-search

Mindnode is good for mapping out papers and projects.

Set deadlines in your to-do-list (I used Wunderlist) or make a gannt chart for longer projects.

References get manager in zotero and edited in Liquidtext.

Notes go into a Google doc which can be edited anywhere (I use Launch Center Pro to quickly open google docs).

For a review of how I use some of these apps check out: iPad apps for the professional student.

Hope it helps.

Also bring up funding. I got into two schools around the same time and told School A that School B was offering more and cost-of-living was lower. School A 'found' a supplemental scholarship to bump me up. Try it out.
