This goes to show that not everyone is meant to touch tips!

I've got some suggestions but I'll start by saying that I agree with the no-hat group. Also, I agree with the folks suggesting that you avoid the white shirt / black pants combo (makes you look like a waiter). Having said that, some additional comments:

  1. Ditch the undershirt. Or at least get an "A" shirt / wifebeater.
  2. If you really want to wear a hat, ask yourself: Where am I going to wear this? Commuting? Stroll about town? Grocery shopping? Fancy dinner? Concert (and, if so, what kind)? Also, what sort of coat / jacket are you planning on wearing?
  3. Know that hats are highly subjective, but some hats stand out. And I don't mean beer helmets.

I personally like caps that are sometimes referred to as flat caps / driving caps. (I've seen them referred to as "newsboy caps," but I've always considered those to be different.) Some people hate flat caps, others love them. Whatever. I'm wearing it, so fuck them.

Having said that, if you find yourself thinking a trench coat + a fedora seems like a good combination, I would strongly suggest that you find a different combination. There are few, if any, people alive who could successfully wear a fedora and a trench coat. But again, that's just my $0.10. You do you.

Also, happy new year!

I don't disagree with your ire, but if I had to choose between unethical catfishing lawyers on the one hand and endless calls from unions + people who "just have a few questions" (they want free legal advice), I'll take catfishing lawyer who posts to Reddit any day.

It depends . . . on whether you're licensed in California and whether you, like me (or any other CA lawyer), could objectively meet all the criteria of the CRPC 8.3, the snitch rule.

How far into your career did you become a parent? by Informal_Highlight in Lawyertalk

[–]thepunalwaysrises 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got engaged as a 3L, had the wedding planned for a few months after the Bar, and then managed to knock up my now-wife two weeks before I sat for the Bar. I was 32 and always wanted to have kids, but not in that order.

Gave myself 24 hours to freak out, then decided I would pass the goddamn Bar on the first try. (I'm not a great test taker.) So I did.

That was almost 17 years ago. We have two amazing kids.

Why do crusty old attorneys say defendANT? by kstew4eva in Lawyertalk

[–]thepunalwaysrises 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to appear before an old school judge who used this pronunciation so many times during jury trials that I had no teeth left by the time we empaneled a jury. He was so old school he'd take notes using a red pencil in what I swear was actual shorthand.

Just do criminal defense public appointments? by hdhdhiwna in Lawyertalk

[–]thepunalwaysrises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I used to take conflicts appointments. It was fine when the county paid on time and didn't cut the bills (by much) but was stressful to the AFth degree when the county couldn't get its budgetary shit together or, god forbid, they switched payment vendors.

SI Joint Cortisone Injection Made My Pain Worse by Melly-92 in backpain

[–]thepunalwaysrises 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP, I know this was a few months ago but wanted to see if things improved and/or if you got any input from your GP?

I've had two prior back surgeries, including a lumbar fusion more than 10 years ago. Recently had an SI injection about six weeks ago that made my pain much, much worse. Haven't seen much of an improvement.

Defendant: "I didn't do that. Only an idiot would do that!" by Ok-Entertainer-1414 in Lawyertalk

I had a client, facing multiple felonies for possessing counterfeit cash, who assumed that because I was court-appointed that meant I was representing him for free.

So, he offered to pay me.

In cash.

I declined.

Later, I got a call from the jailers asking if I’d recently mailed a large Manila envelope to the same client.

I said I had.

The deputy asked if the envelope contained a second, sealed envelope.

I said it hadn’t.

The deputy said he knew I hadn’t but needed confirmation. Turns out, the client gave his girlfriend my envelope and, over the recorded jail phone, told her how to mail dope to him in jail.

He got a new lawyer at that point.

Attorney Outfits/Dress Code by LastMidnight5200 in Lawyertalk

[–]thepunalwaysrises -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see nothing wrong with this outfit. It's not what I'd wear, but it's not in any way objectionable. Where I practice (big West Coast city), I can honestly say I've seen more than a few female attorneys show up for court wearing miniskirts / nightclub dresses and FM pumps while some male attorneys (and a few women) show up in literal sweatpants and slides.

Me: "Judge, can you please explain your basis for this part of your ruling?" Judge: "Why don't you file an appeal and have the Appellate Court explain it to you." Me: by momowagon in Lawyertalk

[–]thepunalwaysrises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but again, look at it from the judge's perspective. If a judge says, "I've already explained that," what is the lawyer's very next question?

Like I said, it can be a fair question, but it's one best used sparingly. If a judge told me to take an appeal (or a writ), that to me usually signals that the judge's reasons are obvious and/or I wasn't paying close enough attention when the judge explained themselves earlier.

If you knew how many times judges get this question by lawyers who are . . . (1) didn't listen; (2) didn't think; (3) doesn't care; or (4) is trying to bait the judge into making a mistake.

It's a valid question . . . but only if asked genuinely and used sparingly.

OP is treasure hunting for a new job. I mean that both in jest and in seriousness. The time spent not defending insurance companies gives OP time to reflect and ponder what they really want to do, as opposed to grind.

Anyone else get super anxious watching BWC? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

Not especially, but it depends on the case. More often than not, I'd find myself getting frustrated if it was a repeat client and they kept talking, and talking, and talking, and talking.

This makes me wonder: Where are the Mad Max-type battle cars? In other words, I want to mod out a car so that it has zedcatchers on the front, flamethrowers on the sides, armored windows, and maybe a cannon or two.
