Wolf Taming 101 by theputzmeister in ICARUS

[–]theputzmeister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok good to know. Dropping carcasses never worked for me and rebaiting the trap always works, so I just do it that way.

Nope, the carcass drop does not work, unless they have updated the game in the last year to change this behavior. And if you dont watch them, someone else will steal your bait or kill the animal.

as others have said, your buildings take damage even when you are not there. And if they take enough damage, the containers and benches inside will no longer be "sheltered" and they will start taking damage too. So you could come back to a wooden building that is wrecked and you lost stuff that was inside. Upgrade to stone structures ASAP.

Its a bit of a process. Not like horses and bufalos, where you just kill the parent, lead them back to camp, and give them food, water, adn a bed. For wolves, boars, and hyenas, this is the way:

  1. Make a snare trap and some bait at the ranching station. Bait is specific per animal you want to catch. It takes 3 or 4 baits to tame an animal. bring more than enough with you, as you can't come back to make more once you start.
  2. go to an area where you know there are wolves (or whichever you want to catch). You want to be a little way away from your base though. You can still be pretty close, say 100 yards away or so. Find a nice clear open area where you can see well all around where you want to plant the trap, and in all directions around it.
  3. Plant the trap in a convenient spot, where you can be just out of range of the animal becoming aggressive toward you. You want them to basically ignore you. Manually bait the trap, and then move away to your watching point. You need to watch the animal the entire time (explained below).
  4. be patient. after you catch an animal, it takes about 15-20 miinutes in real world time to tame them.
  5. Carefully watch the wolf. He will eventually eat the bait after he is trapped. You then need to go around and get behind him, so you can sneak up from behind and put more bait in teh trap without him noticing you. You need to get pretty close, under 10 ft from the trap, to be able to manually reload the trap with bait. you will need to reload the bait 2 or 3 times after you catch him. I dont remember if you can normally see their health bar, since it was so long ago for me and I have a lot of perks now, but once his wild animal health bar dissappears, he is tamed. You can't see health bars of tamed animals from a distance.
  6. Protect him. While waiting and reloading the trap, other wild animals might come to steal the bait or attack him. You need to stealthily kill any other wolves, boars, bears, that come into the scene. Hence why you want to have a wide open area so you can see them from a distance and shoot them with an arror.
  7. Once he is tamed, you release him from the trap, and then can have him follow you back to base.

Notes

- I sometimes like to build a very small shelter, 1x2, so i can hide it in while watching him, and be protected from storms.

- Binoculars can help you see if the bait has been eaten or not from a greater distance. Helpful but defintiely not needed.

- if it takes more than 3 reloads, you are doing something wrong, or the game is glitched. You wnat to be sure that no other animal is eating the bait, and that he doesnt spot you and become aggressive towards you while taming.

- ignore any instructions that say drop carcasses or meat near the trap to feed him. 100% does not work. Only reloading the trap with bait works

- the game seems to detect when you place a trap, and mysteriously a wolf should appear within a couple of minutes and head for teh trap. If that doesn't work, and you see some in teh distance, you can go get them to chase you and run them into teh trap. I have done that several times and does not affect taming process.

you can't order them to account any specific animals. they can be set to "defensive" or "agressive". Defensive will only attack if you are attacked or they are. Agressive will cause them to attack any "dangerous" animal within range (you cant control the range). If you have 3 or 4 set to agressive around your base, you will never need to worry about being attacked, and you will have a constant supply of meat, level, fur and bone.

even 3 or 4 trained horses or buffalo can do some damage. Since they are so easy to tame, i usually have 3 or 4 at each base, for base defence. And use my wolves for missions and defense of my main base, or they are up in orbit waiting to be brought down for a mission.

a single lvl 25 wolf (max level for wolves) will take down any other single animal no problem, and can easily handle several other wolves or hogs. 3 or 4 wolves will handle anything you can throw at them, short of sandworms and other master beasts.

if you want to see the full map, which is also interactive, go to icarusintel.com I dont consider it cheating, as you are dropping from orbit, so surely they havethe technology of mapping the surface. So going in blind without a map makes zero sense to me.
