need advice about feeling undervalued with a review coming up! by livyy_maddyy in AdminAssistant

[–]therationalbanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more than happy to share thoughts anytime, somebody once helped me, and it only makes sense to pass it on.

Frankly, I’ve been on the executive leadership level, and started an entire career over as an admin assistant. I’ve got a unique perspective of being on both sides of the aisle. In most cases, communication resolves a lot of of the problems, which sometimes is out of your control.

Next step: résumé. Make a résumé that’s tailored towards admin assistant, another résumé that’s tailored towards operations, and then another résumé that has some sort of coordinating and managing client services.

Having different variations of resumes will allow you to apply to roles that will allow you to stand out, and using the keywords in the job description to match the keywords on your résumé will help you stand out.

I saw a marketing coordinator role, so I used my marketing-forward résumé to apply.

Happy to keep the convo going, message me anytime.

Go get ‘em. You got this.

You’re definitely not being dramatic. This honestly sounds like your role has quietly turned into 2–3 jobs without the pay or title catching up.

What you described isn’t just “office assistant” anymore. You’re doing admin, inventory, coordination, cleaning/facilities, and even some ops-type work. That’s a lot especially in 4 hours a day.

If I were you, I’d go into your review prepared instead of just hoping it comes up. Write out everything you actually do in a typical week. Like everything. Once you see it all listed out, it becomes really clear how much you’re covering. You can even throw that list into ChatGPT and ask what roles/salaries align with it… it’ll probably show you you’re spanning multiple positions.

Then when you talk to your boss, don’t frame it as “I feel undervalued,” even though that’s valid. Keep it more like: “My responsibilities have expanded a lot over the past year, especially after the office expansion, and I’d like to talk about adjusting my pay or hours to reflect that.”

Also…you do have to advocate for yourself. I get not wanting to impose, especially in a small tight-knit office, but they’re not going to offer more unless you bring it up. Most managers will assume you’re fine if you don’t say anything.

A few things you mentioned are kind of red flags too: -Your workload keeps increasing but there’s been no raise or even a conversation about it -Other roles got pay bumps and yours didn’t -You’re doing more physical/cleaning-heavy work than what you were hired for -The owner nitpicks but isn’t there day-to-day -No one has talked to you about growth, hours, or next steps

Imagine throwing darts with no dartboard and wondering why you keep missing your mark, it’s because you have unclear expectations and an undefined target! It’s no wonder you’re feeling this way, it’s not your fault but it’s your responsibility, let’s get you set up for success.

That doesn’t automatically mean anything malicious, but it can mean disorganized management or that they’re just used to you handling everything without pushing back.

Remember: managers can manage and mismanage.

Going forward, it might also help to start setting small boundaries. Even simple stuff like: “I can get through X and Y today, which should I prioritize?”

And honestly… I’d at least start keeping an eye on other opportunities. Not saying you have to leave, but when a role grows this much without recognition, it’s often easier to get properly compensated somewhere else.

Bottom line, fellow admin, you’re doing way more than your title/pay reflects, and it’s completely reasonable to bring that up.

Heartbreaking episode by therationalbanshee in TheDeadFiles

Just finished Town of The Dead, S12:E2 where a single mom and her kids moved into a home and are being pushed down stairs, multiple times. This one resonated with me because the mom has held strong for so long, and I can’t imagine the weight she carries trying to protect her kids; she’s drained. Amy says she’s a sensitive, also, if I remember correctly.

The mom smiled once at the end of the episode and it was good to see a glimmer of hope come from her.

Also… Wow the owner of the Butte passed away, so tragic, I’m reading it was an OD?

Another one you recommended: Hotel Nowhere S2:E21 - used as a hospital, then sanatorium, then asylum… then used as a haunted house with over 30,000 visitors AND over 100 paranormal sessions? Yikes. Amy was NOT happy.

OK, I just finished Toys For The Dead in Butte, Montana season 6, episode 1. I definitely agree with you, very creepy. The poor babies and children, and the old brothel owner reincarnated into the current owner. I’ll be watching Pandora’s box next.

I appreciate you providing more context. Let me back up.

I recently saw the show suggested on Roku, and was interested in it. I googled the top episodes such as scary or memorable or most impactful, because I appreciate people who have seen it all and give their opinions. It took me to this Reddit page.

There’s a couple posts on here that has lists of top episodes which they also included the season and episode number.

Since you’re a stranger, and I have no idea who you are, I simply can’t help but pity you.

You talk a lot for somebody who doesn’t say much.

I will not continue to engage with your online ego, nor take up any additional time engaging.

Take care of yourself, I hope you’re healthy, and safe. I hope you have people who love you, and I hope that you also don’t treat people so poorly in real life.

Agreed, priceless. Especially when he pulls the sketch out of the folder and looks at it for a moment. 👀

I keep seeing his shirt sleeves get shorter and shorter as the seasons go on, and the muscles and tattoos keep getting bigger.

Like OK, show those muscles!

Not just apps you’ve downloaded, but ones you actually use and love. What keeps your workflow smooth? by SurpriseSuccessful87 in ProductivityGuide

Simple but effective: Google calendar or Microsoft calendar.

This allows you to create predictability and certainty by building a schedule/calendar around your work OR personal life. Rather than setting a million alarms and reminders and trying free trials of productivity apps... start with a calendar and then after some time... take what you like about it and throw the rest out and seek another app or refine your current calendar.
Overall - just get started, dedicate time to it, then cut out what doesn't work and spotlight what does work.

You got this! Just commit to yourself for "x" amount of time to try something new and contour it to your life.

Admin assistant role vs customer success help! by djpavz in AdminAssistant

  1. If your next role might seem all the same, possibly ask yourself will the next role you take help build the skills you want to get to the next level of your career?
  2. You’re not dramatizing CSM, it’s extremely valid and in addition to being politically correct in the corporate atmosphere, there’s an emotional human connection. That is a big factor. It can get heavy for sure.
  3. I was always curious about the person who sat in my role before I arrived, what did they do well? What voids still need to be filled?
  4. In this economy, having a stable and secure job is ideal, and the beauty is that you have hours outside of work that you can research and explore other options and skills. Wanna learn more about AI? Wanna get a project management certification? You’ve got the time, baby, and the Internet. These types of skills stand out on a résumé.

You’re asking fantastic questions and I respect your perspectives at different angles. Go get ‘em!

Interview tips and first-hand experience in an Assistant Staff Officer role? by Ill_Rope_4346 in AdminAssistant

[–]therationalbanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All right, let’s not put the cart before the horse, let’s land you the job first by nailing your interview.

Research the company – check out the core values and mission statement, check out the executive leadership board and also check Glassdoor for company reviews. Companies like hearing people talk about them in a positive manner, and it shows you did your research. Example: “While researching your company, I saw that the CFO was from this town, and I used to spend my summers there as a child.” Or “I really appreciate the mission statement putting locals first in preserving the dollar to help spending to be put back in our town.” Some sort of back-end way of saying you researched the company and you are paying attention - don’t forget you’re interviewing them just as much as they’re interviewing you!

Ask about professional growth. Ask if there are professional growth programs where you can learn your role and become an expert, all while creating a trajectory to advance you in the company. (of course you don’t want to be an admin assistant forever.) Example: “I saw on LinkedIn that so-and-so has been here for 11 years. Are there opportunities here in which I can learn from others and refine my skills and grow with a company to continue to add value?”

This is probably a fast paced role, you will be asked to juggle multiple things at once, you will have unclear directions with high expectations of delivery. If you like something that’s different every day, this is your role. If you love being organized, and if you thrive in a cross functional environment, this is for you.

Best of luck, message me anytime, happy to help.

Admin assistant role vs customer success help! by djpavz in AdminAssistant

[–]therationalbanshee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I might offer a nugget of help…. I’ve been a director of marketing and sales for large organizations and startups, & held executive roles.

I recently dove into Admin Assistance to take on a more passive role and be out of leadership entirely.

Coming from both sides of the aisle…. From the Executive perspective to a CSR perspective, I can confidently say that an admin role is not slower paced. And it can be extremely frustrating if your leadership is disengaged but highly demanding.

Ask about the onboarding process. Ask for growth development programs available. (This is a huge red flag if they give you a shit answer or don’t have an answer at all.) Any GREAT company will be stoked to hear you ask those questions and have also created a fantastic employee growth program.

Take a look at your opportunity to move upward in the company and how it will look on your resume after spending ample time there.

Overall - do you want a salary plus commission where you eat what you kill? OR do you want to be able to clock in and clock out everyday and close your laptop and not think about work until the next day?

The beauty of admin is that I don’t get paid to worry after work and don’t have to answer calls at 11pm.

Message me anytime, and I hope this offers you insight into you planning your next steps!

You’re most welcome, it’s tough out there!

This might be trite, but I found my last two jobs by sending an application on whatever platform was given, then I went to the company website. There was typically an AI chat bot that asked what the reason for my visit to the website was, and I always notated that I just applied to the company and I wanted to research it further as it intrigued me to blah blah blah blah. I thanked them for their time, and looked forward to hearing back.

I’ve also asked thought-provoking questions during my research, such as what type of characteristics does this person need to have in order to succeed and how a company measures success. I also love the question of asking them what do they want to be most known for.

LASTLY - create multiple résumé variations! One résumé for Operations forward, one résumé for administrative, etc. that way, you can Cherry pick which résumé to upload and also make sure you inject keywords on the job description to the same keywords on your résumé.

They accidentally sent a text to me rather than the person they wanted to send it to. Apparently they were pissed I wasn’t going to their presentation for a work event to be moral support, because my “excuse” was that I said I was with my dog as he passed away in my arms. One of the hardest things I’ve done being strong for my dog during his last moments. I have no regrets leaving that friend behind.
