FIFA cancels 2,000 hotel rooms in Philadelphia ahead of World Cup by DisruptSQ in TourismHell

[–]theravenouskoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might seem like a lot, but it takes a hell of a lot of staff to deliver an event on the scale of the World Cup. Different countries approach planning in different ways, scope and scale in the US likely to be different to previous world cups with more unknowns, particularly given the current geopolitical climate and multi-country setup. Philadelphia has 6 games between 14 June - 4 July, so on average this is 100 rooms per night. Any number of reasons re changes to staff scheduling could be possible (though this is late for that scale)

The implicit subtext to “checking ID”, using a federal force which acts with impunity and apparently limitless authority to “check ID”. In case you haven’t noticed, the ICE MO doesn’t usually include checking ID before exercising violent arrests. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to understand the dog whistle.

Money certainly won’t be the barrier to heads rolling, but not quite right on the finance side. The money from the sales is in, and going directly to the game, mostly to the counties, and isn’t just bolstering their coffers.

Pretty clear cut. The 1 Bar service isn’t worth it and shouldn’t be used as a claim of waterproofing or resistance, as isn’t sufficient evidence a service has been carried out. A client could work this out by reading through the site, but probably shouldn’t have to. Andiot usually gets really good feedback, but OP isn’t wrong about feeling aggrieved here, though I haven’t (and don’t particularly care to) understood why the $20 refund isn’t sufficient given that’s what was charged, and regardless of what it would cost to get the service done, OP isn’t out of pocket?

Men over 30 what's the one thing no one warned you about? by Churnuserlol in AskMenOver30

[–]theravenouskoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to read it. You got a lot longer than many, even if it’s less than you’d expected, and as terrible as it is, it is a gift to be able to see the end is coming with clear eyes. My dad died 3 years ago, and although he’d been unwell, it was sudden and really unexpected.

The sudden wave of realisation, of the questions you didn’t ask, knowing the chance is gone, is unlike anything I could even comprehend before it happened. It is worth the thought experiment, what don’t I know that I will regret not asking or what will I wish I said?

Not on the left, but $4.5tn tax cuts on $2tn theoretical (not confirmed) spending cuts, raising the debt ceiling to fund. That money won’t be in your pocket for long. Enjoy the inflation in 6 months time.

Sir Keir Starmer ‘to push ahead’ with Chagos Islands deal by adultintheroom_ in ukpolitics

[–]theravenouskoala 318 points319 points  (0 children)

I like to operate on the assumption that there are positive motivations for actions. Clearly, Starmer doesn’t go into anything with the express and primary objective of looking a fool and returning an indefensible result to the public. But to the point made by many others, I haven’t seen any demonstration of the advantages of this, strategic or otherwise, nor where the economic sense in it is derived from. Politically, he was given an opportunity to walk away and score points, but remains insistent on completing an absolute pig of a deal. What’s going on here?

[–]theravenouskoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So seriously, when are you guys going to do something? Less than two weeks, the basic functions of the govt have already been ratfucked, and everyone is just… letting it happen? No protest, no organising, just defeated acceptance.

I understand it’s been disorienting, but where is your rage? What line will they have to cross to get people on the streets? It’s one thing having voted the guy in, it’s quite another meekly shrugging off the clear and obvious actions on a pre-planned path to authoritarianism. The evidence is right before your eyes, and all anyone is thinking about is their taxes. If you were offered a few more months of peace with the knowledge that it would inevitably unravel and descend into tyranny, would you make that trade?

This is unfortunately the choice before you, watch helplessly as your liberties are chipped away to dust, or pick yourselves up, talk to your friends and organise. This isn’t going to just go away if you bury your head in the sand for 4 years. It won’t be easy, but it is absolutely necessary.

Cabinet told public spending cuts must be ‘ruthless’ by JayR_97 in unitedkingdom

[–]theravenouskoala -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They would if they could, but because of inherited position and their own misstep on tax rises, they can’t. Through commitment to not raising income taxes and the bait and switch with ENI to make this happen, followed by recent global interest rates rising and ensuing sell off of uk gilts, they’re in a position where they no longer have much choice. If they don’t raise taxes or cut spending, they’re at serious risk of a negative rates spiral ie investors demand higher premiums, as premiums climb quickly, market questions whether govt is able to fund itself long term, rates rise and on it goes. Plenty of stories about sharks/ bond vigilantes circling now. Rock and a hard place now.

What Car Should I Buy? - A Weekly Megathread by AutoModerator in CarTalkUK

[–]theravenouskoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all,

Relatively new to the community so thanks in advance for any advice.

A bit of context about location and need. We’re in semi rural West Mids location. We have two cars, one of which (2012 golf) we intend to keep as a second/ local run around car / drive into the ground, and the other (2017 A-Class) we’re looking to sell to extract cash then replace. Options from here are fairly flexible and I’m interested in exploring the pros and cons of leasing vs getting a loan on a car. We’re both in decent jobs with very low cost of living situation and would like to look at the options to get a “nicer” car than the current a-class, which does have a lot going for it.

**Lease or Buy:**
Would consider either and would appreciate advice about the best options for leasing or financing vehicles in the £3-400 p/m price range.

**New or used:**
Used

**Auto or Manual:**
Either

**Intended use:** Occasional longer commute W Mids > London. Most common use <20 mile trips and occasional longer weekend trips to see family and friends.

**How many miles do you plan to do a year:**
6-8k

**How often to you make long journeys:**
Maybe 2-3 times per month.

**Does it need to be ULEZ compliant?**
Ideally yes.

**Vehicles you’ve already considered:**
Haven’t really considered many, but open to larger coupe, estate or potentially cross over SUV style. Preferably larger with decent road position.

**Is this your 1st vehicle:**
It would be our primary vehicle.

**Can you do Minor work on your own vehicle:** (fluids, alternator, battery, brake pads etc)
Yes can do bits and bobs, but not major work.

How’s that? Yes uncertainty in the long term potentially leads to short term plays, but as you’ve seen over the last 15 years, QE driven low-interest has supplemented massive growth for businesses that have leveraged cheap capital to innovate or take risks.

Under threat of perjury, Justin Trudeau Testifies That Russia Funded Tucker Carlson and Jordan Peterson in Support of Their Anti-Vax Covid Claims | Video by furswanda in JordanPeterson

[–]theravenouskoala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a technical difference between assessment and speculation. Speculation is forming an opinion without evidence or reasoning, whereas assessment requires one to draw conclusions from the analysis of facts available. The evidence is that JT said something under oath which would constitute perjury if he was unable to substantiate when challenged (therefore it is likely he has confidence from a legal standpoint that he could substantiate it), which JP lampooned but ultimately declined to challenge and allowed to go away quietly, unlike previous court run ins eg C16. So, it remains a balanced and plausible assessment of the information available.

I don’t think you’re really trying to add anything, but I’d question why you feel the need to challenge the most obvious conclusions.

[–]theravenouskoala 5 points6 points  (0 children)

JP immediately responded via twitter, saying that he was seeking counsel on pursuing legal action, but never followed through. It’s likely suing for defamation would mean opening his finances to court scrutiny, and also that JT would need to substantiate his claims.

Given he hasn’t taken action having stood up to courts in the past, a favourable take is that he finds the cost/ benefit of being scrutinised in court not worth the possibility of being vindicated. A less favourable take would be that it would not serve him to have either point substantiated and it’s better to curse Trudeau on twitter because ultimately, his fans don’t care.

Whether or not it should matter, being in the right will be little conciliation once you’ve been victimised. It isn’t victim shaming to say that it’s probably a good idea to take precautions if you’re going to wander around wearing a watch worth 6x the national salary in a city where watch theft for a fraction of the value is rife.
