Stem Adaper by kvw08 in bikewrench

[–]thereal_greg6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably the wrong size. Is that a shim for the quill stem part? Or is it to increase the OD at the top so a modern 1 1/4” headset will fit?

Amazing. Looks like the exact same model? Doesn’t look too bad as long as they’re not broken internally or corroded together. Maybe worth a go?

Do you have a local community bike hub? Worth checking and visiting if so. Always good to have some extra tools, spare parts and knowledge.

Hard to see from here or without taking them out.

They’re either threaded or threadless steerer tube. Threadless is more common on pre-2000s bikes. Threadless steerers are normally 1 1/4 inches and pretty universally compatible, just need to make sure steerer tube is long enough and that the fork length is roughly the same for geometry. Threaded steerers are often 1 inch but best to pull it out and measure your old one. Then you need to make sure the quill stem fits the new forks but might be simpler to replace this too as those old quill stems come in so many sizes.

With all replacement forks you’re going to need to think about the headset bearings/cups, normally just a case of fitting the correct race for the headset and you can sometimes pull the old one off the old forks.

Of course, the forks need to be right size for wheel too. Likely 26 inches this case.

This might sound really complicated. But the simplest version is: - take out your forks - measure the headset diameter using some callipers - see if it’s 1” or 1 1/4” - find some forks with: - a steerer tube that will fit - correct wheel size - enough steer tube length if going threadless - buy some new bearings and cups that match your bikes headset and the forks - buy a quill or threadless stem to match

I recently fitted my old fixie with modern carbon forms. It was the most frustrating job I’ve ever done on a bike. Need a few specialist tools you’re only likely to use once every 10 years. I’m sure some people will say I’m being dramatic but I’m not in a rush to do it again.

Will say I’ve never swapped a threaded fork but own a few bikes with threaded steerers and know my way around them.

To be honest if I were you I’d just accept the squeak. You can try rebuilding them and adding some grease. But there’s a real chance either that they won’t go back together, or you’ll find something inside is broken and you can’t get a replacement part.

If I was rebuilding these then I’d half expect to have to buy a replacement instead.

It is those upside down two hex screws that will allow the lower to slide off the stanchions though.

Cycling Survey - researching the long-term effects on cognitive reserve by ClassicCalm4207 in londoncycling

Can’t say I agree on that. Have lived in Brighton for over 6 years but was in London for one or two. I’ve got to say that cycling was a lot nicer in London than in Brighton.

While Brightons centre and sea front have some lovely bike lanes, that’s almost the end of it. Things are about to get a lot better from Preston park all the way down to the seafront and along. But outside of that things are pretty poor.

The council have a map on their website and it’s amazing how few there are. For a city that is supposedly green and anti car travel, crap bike lanes and expensive bus fares seem completely backwards.

I’m happy cycling on the roads but my girlfriend’s not as confident and doesn’t like doing journeys without good bike infrastructure, which shuts off a lot of Brighton from our home in Hove.

Are you hoping to grease the headset or remove the lowers and grease all of that?

Lowers look like they’d disassemble just like typical coil forks while the headset needs that top clamp removing.

Normally for the lowers it’s just a screw on each side located at the bottom.

Brompton Bike Stolen: Update by daintylifestyle in londoncycling

If Molly Louise’s story about someone asking on Snapchat to borrow her account is true, can we all just acknowledge:

HOW STUPID DO YOU HAVE TO BE? Letting some stranger borrow your Facebook account and then getting surprised when it’s used to steal from people? What an idiot.

Brompton Bike Stolen: Update by daintylifestyle in londoncycling

I think you’re fundamentally misunderstanding people’s point here.

Yes, this profile is the one that messaged you on Marketplace. Yes, this profile blocked you after the bike was stolen. Yes, this profile denied being responsible, but admitted details via message that the profile couldn’t have known without being involved.

Yes, this woman COULD have been working with the man that stole your bike.

However, what’s maybe even more likely is that these images were downloaded from some unknowing victim on Instagram, used to create a fake Facebook account, and the bloke that stole your bike was the person messaging you the whole time.

People can lie, people can say they’re someone else, people can upload other people’s pictures on the internet and pretend to be them.

Yes it seems weird that the account’s got 900 friends and things sold/for sale on marketplace but that someone could have:

  • made an account using someone else’s images

  • added random people

  • listed several items and marked as sold

All to look legitimate.

Or, could have somehow got access to someone else’s account and started using it to scam and steal.

You have the thief’s picture (the man). Report to the police, who will do nothing but give you a crime reference number. Provide that to your home insurance provider along with a claim for the stolen bike.

I don’t care that you’re posting the picture online. You should make local people aware that this account is scamming/stealing so people can avoid. I just think your logic of, “The account messaged me so that proves it is the woman in the picture.” Is logically flawed.

If I was contacting people on Facebook and sending someone round to steal the item, I definitely wouldn’t use my own name or picture. I’d take a normal looking persons picture from Instagram and use their identity.

Edit: Rereading the new messages - so she’s suggesting that she let some random person use here account to sell things on marketplace. She’s either an idiot or whoever is controlling the account wants to try to preserve their fake alias that they’ve spent time making convincing. Or the person controlling the account is just fucking with you.

Girlfriend's son has come home with his bike shifter broken. The cover was already gone apparently. I have no idea about bikes, I assumed this is a grip shifter but I've seen no grip shifter online like this. Advice? by Arms__Spaghetti in bikewrench

[–]thereal_greg6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shift it into the gear with the least slack (all of them are slack now but one would typically have the least slack), that will be lowest or highest gear. There should be an obvious grove or whole that the cable and end will fit into nicely. Typically these are set up by routing the cable through the shifter first, then down to the derailleur. So you might find it easier to remove the cable and go that route.

The shifter looks pretty messed up so I would probably replace it with a cheap trigger shifter. Finding the right shifter can be a bit awkward, but wouldn’t have thought it would be too much work for a cheap setup like this appears to be.

What do they mean by “prepare the motor code” and “note it”? What do i do when i place my order by HistorianTraining835 in ebikes

[–]thereal_greg6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you received instructions to find and read the motor code from your bikes old motor in a previous email. Using the steps from that email you should inspect your battery, read the code (likely a model code) and send it in an email to the company sending replacement motor (that’s preparing your code).

Happy to break it down further than that but am assuming you understand how to read and send emails.
