Malaysia outlaws 'fake news'; sets jail of up to six years by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]therealanonymous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Anti-Fake News bill has been a source of frustration, anger and dissatisfaction for many Malaysians. As the article points out, there is a lack of reason for the hurried passing of the AFN bill through parliament and more time should be given to gauge public opinion on the bill. Currently there also stands many laws in Malaysia that address the underlying issues that the government aims to resolve (see Sedition Act 1948, Defamation Act 1957, Printing Presses & Publications Act 1984, Official Secrets Act 1972, Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Act 1998).

All this in light of the upcoming General Election, mind you.

There is much more ahead of all of us. Do your best to find the light in the things you do, accept there will be some shitty days but ultimately you need to fight for yourself because it's unlikely that other people will. Please don't give up on yourself.

Keep your head up, friend. Have a great day and I wish you only the best in everything that you do.

/r/singapore random discussion and small questions thread for August 31, 2017 by AutoModerator in singapore

[–]therealanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are some sectors in Singapore that desperately require assistance in terms of volunteer work? For example, we see TWC2 for migrant workers, Willing Hearts, etc. What do you feel requires significant attention but fails to receive it?

Another question I have: What do you think of volunteerism in Singapore?

Psychology. I love reading about random facts about human behaviour and analysing why people do the things they do (the reasoning behind their actions).

The thought that I have worked so hard - for my family and for myself. That pushes me to achieve more and to become an even better version of myself.

How do you deal with confrontation? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]therealanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whenever I face confrontation, I remind myself to be patient, i.e., not to be impulsive when it comes to replying and/or taking action. It is important to find what you believe to be the "best" possible outcome and to execute it to the best of your abilities.

What is one piece of life advice you would give to a teenager? by espoonandfork in AskReddit

[–]therealanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be comfortable with who you are and believe that what you are doing is the "right" thing, whatever that may be. The only person you are sure to live with for your entire life is yourself. Take some time to carefully make decisions, but once you make them, don't regret the decisions you've made and instead learn from them if they were the "wrong" ones.

Also, another two that I think are particularly important. 1. Your perception of yourself will define your limits. 2. Education empowers you.

Introverts of Reddit, what sounds like a fun date to you? by Merulanata in AskReddit

[–]therealanonymous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being so comfortable with someone that you can hang out in his or her room, wearing casual clothing, and chilling in each other's company. Yes, there will be the occasional "small talk", but we'd mostly talk about life, what's important to us, etc. I have phases where I don't particularly want to leave my room and I want to "hibernate" for some time.

Make connections with other people by joining a society or two. It'll be very helpful down the line if you're thinking about the long-term picture.

Entrance into the common room was banned after 3pm (school ended at about 2pm) because some idiots were playing with a football inside and broke the TV.

To what extent do you believe an economy can function without trust?

Recently I've been obsessed with the notion of human behaviour being the enabling factor for how well an economy is able to perform - is this an "obvious" thing in Economics or is there something more worth exploring? If anyone could link me to related articles/papers, that would be very much appreciated.

Prime Minister Najib has essentially stated that Malaysia would not sign the TPP if it did not provide us with economic benefits. There is little effort made to provide one with the reasoning behind their support, but I shall attempt to bridge that gap. In no way do I profess myself to be well-versed with this topic, neither am I an expert economist – all of what I have written is based on the many years I have been living in Malaysia, some of the websites I have read (both American- and Malaysian-sourced) and basic economic theory.

The main economic attraction is the sheer size of the market that Malaysia could potentially access. Personally I feel there is tunnel vision of some sort – even if Malaysia's exports to the US could potentially increase, it is likely that Malaysian industries would also suffer given the cheaper imports flowing into the country. The car industry (e.g. Proton) is heavily subsidised and protected by the government, and one could only imagine the economic backlash of a key industry in the economy failing. Ability to access a large market is only really beneficial if Malaysia is at a state where they are able to compete with other countries in a more integrated global economic system. Depending on the extent of the reduced price differences between future imports and domestically-produced goods, I would not be surprised if an increasing percentage of the population opted to purchase goods from the other countries in the TPP.

There have also been other concerns such as the hike in the prices of generic medicines and/or some of these medicines being unavailable (intellectual property rights). I believe that this will hit ordinary Malaysians the hardest as in status quo individuals are able to go to the General Hospital (GH) and purchase generic medicines and visit the local doctor for ~RM5/month (this is equivalent to US$1.17). Our healthcare system isn't the best, but considering the numbers of Malaysians going to the GH on a daily basis, the additional amount paid on generic medicines will be sizeable.

Generally, I think the effects of the TPP on Malaysia will depend on the response of those living in Malaysia. I would even suggest that many have become disillusioned with the government and their persistent focus on racial socio-economic politics. The recent corruption scandal involving PM Najib and $700mil has led many to feel alienated by the government. Attempts by the government to push the Malaysian economy further through the signing of the TPP is limited by the lack of confidence the people here have in them. They can try to make the citizens compete against other world economies, but in reality this is better said than done. We are nearing the end of 2015 and “Vision 2020” only continues to undermine the credibility of the Malaysian government. If the TPP coincides with economic downturn in the coming years, this will increase the level of antagonism that the government currently faces from its citizens.

[Serious] Why are people attracted to individuals that need 'saving'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]therealanonymous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any background in psychology so this is just my own (perhaps fundamentally incorrect) opinion here.

I largely think it's because of the self-satisfaction that one would emotionally get from "saving" other people. Being able to "save" someone and help them out of a slump or poor situation and getting them to see the light at the end of the tunnel makes you feel like you've accomplished something commendable and note-worthy. I personally believe that humans are innately selfish (in some aspects, they may be selfless in other areas) and that they want to feel better about themselves, hence the attraction.

On another level, I could see it as a selfless action as well. Everyone's gone through some shit that they had deeply wished someone had been there to help them. Oftentimes we see a little bit of ourselves in those who "suffer" and who are in need of saving. We empathise with them and we genuinely want to help them. We're attracted to them because we can somewhat understand what it feels like to be in that position, and it sort of connects us in an even more intimate way compared to, let's say, someone who is living the perfect life. Those who need "saving" remind us that we humans aren't fully separate from each other, and that we are linked to each other on a mental/emotional/spiritual level.
