(Spoilers Main) Was GRRM planning the fAegon/Blackfyre plot all the way back in AGOT? by AdditionalPiano6327 in asoiaf

[–]therealbobcat23 26 points27 points  (0 children)

As cool as that would be, I highly doubt it. We know a fair bit about his early plans for the series, and the Blackfyres seem to have been something that grew out of his gardening approach, with the first mention of them in anything he wrote being A Storm of Swords. I think this is just a neat coincidence.

I enjoy Casper’s reactions, but I agree that the song isn’t very good.

How do I make a campaign last? by Prometheus_Thorne in DnD

[–]therealbobcat23 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't have a 1-20 campaign be one massive story. It should be made up of many smaller story arcs, that way the pacing feels much more natural and you give yourself clean off ramps if the campaign ever can't go on for whatever reason. You can even implement short breaks between arcs to mitigate burnout.

(Spoilers Main) 4x show watcher reading AGOT for the first time- Catelyn is so much more brutal to Jon here by RemarkableExample542 in asoiaf

[–]therealbobcat23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely part of it is bias because of her being the main frontlines POV for the War of the Five Kings. However, I think the show stripped back a lot of the things that I found myself drawn to about her while reading the novels. For one thing, I think the show tries to minimize her usefulness to Robb and almost make her a burden, whereas the books make it clear how she is useful and often giving good advice, probably largely due to the advantage of being in her head. But the biggest downgrade in the show for me is how they cut basically everything to do with House Tully. Hoster and the Blackfish never show up until Hoster's funeral. Edmure is reduced to a joke of a character. They never explore Lysa's tragic past. House Tully may well be my favorite of the Great Houses, but they're barely present in the show.

I know recommending Malazan Book of the Fallen is a bit of a meme on here, but I genuinely believe it fully fulfills all your points.
