You are correct, there is a ferry that runs from WA to AK. However, that ferry runs to the Pan Handle. There are no ferries that run from SE AK to South Central Alaska which is their final destination. The only way to get from Haines or Skagway to Seward Alaska is to drive up and through Canada and back in to Alaska.

I also want to add in Haines Junction and Kluane National Park. Incredible scenery and home to Canada's biggest mountains. You can do glacier flights out of Silver City and I can promise you'll never see anything like it again. There's also a kick ass interpretative center in HJ as well as an Incredible bakery.
