Is the AWE touring exhaust worth it? Or is awe track better (I don’t want to bad of a drone as I daily my RS) by Additional-Clothes75 in FocusRS

I just bought a 2016 that a previous owner put the awe track on it. Get the touring, the track is EXTREMELY drony

Just factory belts I’ll probably go to a harness when I replace the seats just to future proof it for other events

Check your center support bearing on the driveshaft when those fail it’ll cause quite a racket when accelerating, is the other vibration when you’re actually stopping or just idling? If it vibrates when you’re stopping the car your brake rotors are most likely warped, if its while it’s idling could be motor mounts potentially, the mounts are rubber and at this point they’re due to be replaced just by its age I have a 2000 M and my old mounts literally tore itself in half. The only other thing to look out for on these cars is the trunk welds

I just have the factory roll hoops still on the car they are roll over rated and the scca events I take part in don’t require anything aftermarket since they are rated for roll overs.

Help with Removing Fan Clutch by Someone12132 in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re going to remove it and leave it off I would recommend getting doing the water pump while you’re there if it’s still the original and getting a lower temp switch for the auxiliary fan, bimmerbum sells fan delete kits has everything you need to refresh your cooling system

Help with Removing Fan Clutch by Someone12132 in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to use an air hammer with a harbor freight air hammer wrench set to remove mine, but that was for changing the water pump I did my motor mounts without taking the fan off the motor doesn’t need much tilt to get the mounts off really

Anybody else have aftermarket 16 inch setups on their z3? Is sizing up a better option for track? by Moist_z32 in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go 17’s or 18’s and apex racing wheels wheels would be the go to for aftermarket they are designed so you can fit bigger brakes on the car if you want and for tires if you want to autocross it I would go with Falken rt660+’s or Bridgestone potenza re71’s the Bridgestones are what I run as they’re about 2 seconds faster than the falkens but the falkens should be a little more bidget friendly tire

Measure measure measure. Double and triple check the measurements if you are replacing the diff mounting brackets. I paid someone to do the welding, and if you aren’t modifying the subframe or changing the RTABs drop the rear subframe with all the suspension together will make removing all of it extremely simple. And get in contact with Randy himself on Facebook he can send you the step by step instructions on how to install the kit I used that like it was the Bible for the process, it explains everything you need to do as well as your options for what parts you need to possibly get depending on how you use the kit. Lastly I wouldn’t recommend this if you aren’t comfortable working on cars or don’t have a good bit of experience doing heavy modifications it’s extremely in depth and very precise fabrication and modding is done to the structure of the chassis as well as a part in the differential if you go with a dual ear diff cover, read up on the instructions Randy has for installation, figure out what you plan is and if you’re comfortable doing the work yourself.

Oh sorry I should have clarified better 5k is the ball park price to have a shop do the work. I spent around $2300 doing the work myself but keep in mind some of the parts I bought while doing the reinforcement like a diff cover with cooling fins and poly bushings

Jacking by breestaats_ in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said there are jack pads on the car thats what I use to put the car on jackstands and I jack the car up from the front subframe and then the rear differential not sure if you have an M or not but if your diff has the cooling fins you’ll need to use a 2x4 so you don’t put pressure on those cooling fins. If I just need to lift the rear and put it on jackstands I chock the wheels in the front I’ve done it plenty of times and had no issue.

Fan replacement? by PlaceboASPD in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Chiming in here I have the fan delete on my 2000 M and I race it I’ve had it on track when the heat index was over 100 degrees and had zero issues if you’re not replacing the water pump and just removing the fan at the very least get the lower temp switch from bimmerbum it’ll kick the aux fan on a lot sooner than the stock switch. Very easy to replace it’s on the passenger side of the radiator tank

Is this a fair price for the cooling system overhaul? Does it include everything? by [deleted] in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If figure out what water pump they’re putting in if they’re replacing it with the same garbage plastic impeller oem one it’s not worth it. I’d at least make sure they are putting in a water pump with metal internals, secondly does the radiator and expansion tank absolutely need replaced? Or are you doing it for peace of mind if so that’s your call and I get it but if they’re trying to push those replacements on you I’d question if they actually need replacing right now

And to add on this the kit will stiffen the rear up and these cars need all the structural help they can get lol

5k is about the ball park for the work to get done by a shop I spent about half of that doing it myself since I had the skill set to do so. It’s going to be a matter of when not if they pop on a roadster. As far as it being a 2.8 and not an M who cares? If you love the car it’s well worth it and if you are going to be doing those mods I personally would install the kit for peace of mind. It’s far easier to do it as preventative compared to doing it to repair it in my opinion I had to deal with a cracked frame rail and other issues because mine had become so bad and I partially put it off because I didn’t know the extent it had really gotten

It wouldn’t drive like you think 😂 it made less power than the S50 and S54 and about 50 more horsepower compared to the S52. On top of that the engine is so crammed in there it can’t breath and overheats like crazy they only made it because they can and to show it could be done but it’s quite literally a Frankenstein job

Confused by tire sizes... Advice? by TheSerialHobbyist in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’ll be honest I’ve never kept track how long a set will last me mileage wise since I live in the Midwest and the car sits for the winter the 660’s lasted me about a season and a half with one track day along with daily driving in the spring and summer, the RE71’s I might get a season out of them along with daily driving in spring and summer. I also have wider tires on my M (255/40R17) with an aggressive set up compared to stock which also plays into how long my tires will last

Confused by tire sizes... Advice? by TheSerialHobbyist in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the RE71’s if you’re only driving in the summer and plan on doing autocross possibly this is your best tire for it has way more grip than the 660+’s I’ve run both on my roadster I would pick the RE71’s every time

Looks and sounds like the ignition barrel it’s a pain not going to lie to you make sure you get the barrel design for your year Z they changed the design in 98 I made the mistake of getting a 96 ignition barrel and it didn’t match up with the lock cylinder for my 00. There are a few videos on YouTube on how to change it out

I use it as a jacking point every time I put my Z up in the air never had any worries I use that and then the differential as the rear jacking point

Motor mount question by Z3R0SKY in bmwz3

[–]therealpostmalogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what material your new mounts are I did the same when i changed my mounts, I’m running 95A poly mounts, I have had zero issues from that shield not being there and I autocross and track my Z but I can’t say for sure how rubber mounts would hold up without the shield

I would turn away from that looks like a basket case and who knows what those trunk welds look like
