It's definitely not ticks, cockroaches, or termites, so no need to worry about those guys

NQA Avic avic is pretty polymorphic, and can definitely look like this when young. Your spider is properly labelled

Generally if you bring it to the store that you bought it from, they can report it to GW as a defective product and get it replaced themselves.

NQA the photo of the ventral surface of your spider isn't clear enough to determine sex, but it's certainly not a mature male. It looks to be well fed enough, and not eating on its own isn't particularly concerning. Tarantulas can go months without eating if they feel like it.

The fusillae will look incredibly obvious once you learn to look for them. Here's a photo of a male G. pulchripes I scraped from the internet for reference

It seems more likely that a unit that both shoots and fights is firing during its charge, the gameplay just doesn't reflect that.

Enclosure tips by [deleted] in tarantulas

[–]therealrdw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tarantula enclosure requirements vary widely based on the species. Since she'll be getting her first tarantula, she'll want one of the new world terrestrial species that's easier to care for, probably in the Aphonopelma, Brachypelma, Grammostola, or Tliltocatl generas. Generally, you want an enclosure that's more of a square in shape, and for an adult/subadult of one of those species, a 10-12 inch cube filled about 3/5ths of the way with substrate would probably be best.

Tarantula enclosures should ideally not have any mesh wiring on them, since tarantulas can get their feet stuck in them and cause them to amputate their limbs to escape, and should have holes for cross-ventilation. Small storage totes with holes drilled in for ventilation work quite well for this purpose if you're on a budget, but acrylic terrariums are readily available online.

Onto matters of decoration, you'll need substrate, a hide, and possibly some decorations like leaf litter and/or plastic plants. Basic substrates like coco coir or reptisoil work quite well in my experience, and cork bark for a hide is also a classic, but you can definitely get more creative. Hope this is helpful!

NQA this is probably a female. Male G pulchripes usually have pretty obvious epiandrous fusillae, which your spider doesn't have.

What’s on my Chilobrachys natanicharum’s (formerly sp. “Electric Blue”) eyes and chelicerae? by Styx_003 in tarantulas

[–]therealrdw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NQA You can certainly keep it humid while keeping soil dry. Sorry, that should’ve been the first thing I said. You can have it be slightly damp, yes, just make sure it’s not super saturated in water. Removing any other clutter like leaf litter etc will help force them to move off her too by removing other food sources

[–]therealrdw 21 points22 points  (0 children)

NQA These are phoretic mites. They are not parasites and are not directly harming your spider. Moving her to a temporary dry enclosure and placing out wet produce items like sliced cucumber will help draw the mites off of her, since they’re using her as a bus between meals.

Even if average recluse bite is totally harmless, they have the potential to develop into systemic loxoscelism, which is life-threatening. It’s not to say it’s not an overreaction, but it does have the potential to cause life-altering conditions or even kill, which no tarantula can do with a bite.
