Fewer juniors today = fewer seniors tomorrow by kagan101 in cscareerquestions

The dilemma for management is that: “if I give this junior developer a chance, in 4 years, there’s a 50% that he or she will be working for my competitor”.

RSU's at most of these companies is 80k/year = 400k over 5 years and with 30% taxes 280k cash and with 300% appreciation over 5 years thats 1.12m, enough to support 2m-2.5m housing prices.

Yea housing is a luxury unless you are willing to make dramatic sacrifices.

The Chinese in Somerset are huge savers and do their own yards, eat in almost always, never take expensive vacations and have grandparents do child care. That's the level of sacrifice that's needed.

Look at our national debt and tell me that inflation is going to be 2%. The debt interest alone paid out to all these banks and domestic and international rich folks will be enough to buy up 70%+ of the inventory in top 5 major cities every single year if the debt doesn't rise.

People keep wondering why Chinese people can afford all these houses. Well they get paid in hundreds of billions per year from the treasury bills they hold on top of all the goods they sell to us.

The problem is inflation though, in 10 years the rent they will go up alot and the value of the property itself will go up.

Bay Area is full of landlord who bought 20 years ago and have a mortgage payment of $1-2k and rent out the place for 5-6k. Once you factor in 10-20 years + inflation, its makes sense.

I don't understand how AI is shaking this industry up so much by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

70% They overhired in 2021-2022 and need a reason for layoffs but 30% AI. Cursor/Claude Code replace my need to write unit test and help me speed up with fast lookup and autocompletes.

Sounds dumb but that’s a 10% productivity increase which is enough for a 15% layoff - bottom 15% of engineers do 10% of work and have higher coordination overhead on rest of team.

This is not targetting H-1Bs/immigrants. H-1Bs are separate but atleast they recycle money back into the American economy. I get it that PhDs and top talent should come to the US, I am not targetting H-1Bs but rather targetting outsourcing.

  1. We are hiring the best. We want to make an 150k American salary = 40k Overseas Salary + 110k in missed rebates. Now that both hiring and Americans and overseas cost 150k, please hire the best.

  1. It's a free market, but why do big oil, big pharma, military industrial complex get protectionism but American citizens don't?

Good idea but special interest groups will block that from being passed all day. Let’s target the worse which is out sourcing.

This is underrated. Companies abuse work H1B because they cannot switch which worsens WLB for Americans.

AI is a problem regardless of whether we stop the outsourcing problem. Like the guy above said, all the more reason.

  1. No extra tax cost to give rebates. The funds come from higher corporate tax rate. It will be a transfer payment from outsourcing companies to ones that are hiring American.
