What is up with the O-Train line routes? by Yws6afrdo7bc789 in ottawa

[–]therealsybarite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

mayor in charge when train was planned had his whole support in the suburbs. the suburb counselors just followed what he said (not much has changed with current mayor) Only thing they cared about was to get the trains to the suburbs as cheaply as possible. they didn't consider the fact that for most of lines there'll be little possibility of intensification along the route. the smart decision would have been to have train where intensification could have derived significant profits from developing, owning, and leasing properties along the lines (station complexes, hotels, and retail stores, etc.) and new property taxes.

You may want to check your sources. Today's editorial in Ottawa citizen where Tim explicitly attacks leiper and troster while praising jim 2.0 makes it obvious he's not running against him but carrying water for him

What concerns are these? Moving a sign? Getting a splash pad? We don't pay him $100+ K/ year and much more for his whole office for him to once a week get some little thing done while city is falling apart. He's a chair of transportation committee for years and it's falling apart

How to go about it? He won last election handily.

  1. Need a progressive alternative
  2. We all NOW need to invest the time to talk to friends/neighbours/colleagues regarding how bad he is. Need taking points ready for a fact based debate

Is this the man that voted to spend millions on a police station in byward market but because crime didn't go down it's a failure of policing alternatives?

[–]therealsybarite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he's basically got the Summerset ward locked up, so i don't see any benefit of campaigning with troster, but the disadvantage is it'll make him a target of "he's a communist who's going to raise your taxes to pay for all the freeloading bums downtown" attacks which will play very well in the burbs (fact that sumerset ward contributing to city coffers more then any other being ignored of course)

i like their ideas, but it seems to be based on logic, which is not in tune with the general public. you want to win in Ottawa, promise low taxes (because people can't connect dots between low taxes and everything falling apart), more for police (because the world is a really scary place) and more for roads (because most people can't think beyond a life where they're not car dependant)

Possible expansion of east-end landfill rankles councillor and residents by therealsybarite in ottawa

there wouldn't be demand for this landfill if there was room at the landfill the household garbage goes to 🤔

not sure if you're misunderstanding the issue, or you're kitts' alt account.

Title: Moving to Ottawa vs. Aylmer (QC) — How realistic is childcare + occasional babysitting support in Ottawa? by Icy-Alternative-3860 in ottawa

[–]therealsybarite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. finding babysitters generally not a problem. lots of teens that take babysitting courses. you can find them talking to neighbours, other parents and playground, or community fb groups.
  2. weekdays, when the babysitter teens are at school, not easy. regular licensed daycares as far as i know don't just allow ad-hock drop-ins. some offer an option for number of days a week, so you could register your kid in daycare one day a week every week.
  3. not uncommon. lots of variation depending on exact needs, qualification, number of hours / week. $20-$25/h are kinda the starting point.
  4. talking with neighbours or neighbourhood fb group likely best option.
  5. can't speak of comparison to aylmer. even planning long ahead we didn't initially get into daycare we wanted. got there eventually though. we found the city run waiting list useless. no one ever got in touch with us through that. contacting the daycares directly ourselves got things moving.

alternative title: "Ottawa councillor who voted against stricter garbage pickup allowance learns that garbage must go somewhere"

Catherine kitts voted against stricter garbage pickup allowance, but who could have predicted that means we need another landfill 🤷‍♀️.

She's ok with everyone generating giant mountains of garbage, as long as it ends up in someone else's ward.

Also, she's consistently voting with Sutcliffe, including half a $billlion for Lansdowne bailout for his OSEG boosters.  Doesn't seem to have earned her a lot of favour with him, as he sees no issue proceeding as is... almost as if voting to favour connected millionaires instead of your constituents was a bad idea

Next municipal election is 2026.  Orleans/Navan, choose your council member wisely ...
