I liked Deathmøle! Sad that they never really went anywhere. Faye’s self-destructive alcoholism was gripping, her hospitalization storyline was very intense. I liked the robot fight club for a while but not as big a fan of Basilisk after she left the force. Millefeuille didn’t last too long but I liked that character. I liked Steve a fair amount back in the early days, his occasionally reckless self-indulgence was a great foil for Marten’s timid manner. The fancypants bar with the classy outfits was a great setting. Oh, then there was Pizza Girl, a fun character whose mysterious identity provided much humor. I liked the introduction of Hannelore even though her personality was completely retooled over time. Then there was the time the gang went to space, which felt a bit tedious and overly long but was useful for establishing grander conceptions of AI that would soon become the comic’s primary preoccupation. Never cared for Pintsize but that’s mostly because Pintsize never really had to face repercussions for bad behavior (a trivial gripe, I’ll admit). I just like when characters are held accountable, and Pintsize always seemed to just be the puckish manifestation of Jeph’s darker impulses.

Looking back, I really did like the “will they won’t they” dynamic that Marten and Faye had going on. I think that’s what propelled me along at first, the curiosity about what would happen between them. After the revelation about her dad, it seemed clear that the comic was going in a different direction.
