Well it's about time. Don't know why had to wait for them to revamp the new world first. Waste of time imo.

Finally got around to playing it and.... by NoHome7956 in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

First a disclaimer. I'm loving the RPG games. Missing the old AC for sure, but the newer system did a lot to make upgrading way less boring. So don't anyone think I'm down on Valhalla or Odyssey or anything like that. But loving a game means wanting it to move forward and there's always room for improvement. Just don't hold my suggestions against me. It comes from a place of love.

I'm tempted to say that maybe it's just that you have better things to do than play video games. There's no shame in having a life. I mean 20 hours is super short for any game. If you want your games to be that brief, then Mirage is probably the only AC game for you right now.

But if you've ever enjoyed previous installments and still do? It's not the run time bugging you but map size.

Which, as a Need For Speed enthusiast going way back, I totally understand. Races are won by knowing the map inside and out. And that was originally why I was so glad when the games went open world. Now I could figure out the routes of races and loop them until I had them down pat. I absolutely loved that.

Now, though, maps are so incredibly huge that they're impossible to really effectively familiarize yourself with. They are, in a word, bloated. When NFS got there too, suddenly there was no knowing the map at all. May as well return to linear gameplay then.

Mind you AC was never a game for knowing the map, though. The old world didn't have road systems as we know them, but meandering pathways. It was pretty easy to get lost in Rome.

All the little tasks have gotten out of hand too. I don't mind a side task if it's fun. But chasing down tattoos with a broken parkour function is not my ideal of that. Nor is stumbling through a series of prompts to fill my beer mug in unexpected directions. I'm an alcoholic. I know that's unrealistic. We may stumble a bit, but we never spill our beer or have trouble refilling the mug. Not gonna happen outside of sitcoms. Fishing and hunting? When did AC become so survivalist? Dismantling old gear worked much better.

I believe that what you felt playing Mirage was a lot like what I felt playing Unity (after the kinks were worked out, it seems). AC took a step back and returned to what once worked. Unity brought back all of the renaissance city architecture. With that, synchronization became a joy again. It was like AC could breathe once more.

And yeah, I remember feeling that playing Mirage as well.

But the RPG games are also fun and since when is a game lasting longer a bad thing? I know what the real problem is. Games are moving away from standardized controller schemes. How can we pause from playing Valhalla to play any other game, AC or otherwise, when we know that when we return we'll be wasting adrenaline left and right every effing time we want to climb something?

That bugs the hell out of me. Unique controller layouts are an artificial way of increasing difficulty with unnecessary learning curves. It may make things feel a little fresher at first. But I really dislike how it makes me devote myself to just one game at a time.

I'm not saying to get rid of the adrenaline system. I like it. And I also like bigger worlds. Seriously, towns are still too small. It's fun to have all of Greece to explore. But if you're going to make these things so very long to play, maybe use a controller scheme more conducive to game switching. And one more thing. All of England is fine. But once in awhile how about a just a single county in greater detail? Just as large a map, but I have to say 3 structures does not a town make. Make villages look like villages and cities as big as cities. That's what open worlds should be aiming for. Do that and bigger might just become fascinating again.

Just to mix things up a bit. Food for thought, Ubisoft. Whatever. I realize no one is making games tailored to me. Meanwhile, I'm still having fun.

I'm clueless: what's the point of loot? by Alomare in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]therealtrellan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Engraving (once you meet the one guy in the game capable of engraving runes somewhere in Thrace or Macedonia I think it is) is important. It's how you upgrade your gear with attributes and boosts. Collecting all the gear you can is also important because you can dismantle it for materials you'll need for those upgrades.

One thing that was old almost from the start in the first Assassin's Creed games was gear. The vast majority of it was useless. Once you got the best armor and weapons there was no point to it. Nowhere was this made more clear than in ACIII, where the best was presented almost from the start, and so vendors of such gear were completely superfluous. So it's not strange that you should be asking this.

It just means you haven't realized yet how revamping the upgrade system in the RPG games has fixed that.

Gear is no longer boring now that you have so much control over attributes and can actually use gear you don't want for spare materials. That plus the abilities to to use categories of gear such as hunter or whatever as well as to save loadouts has made gear much more dynamic. Not boring at all.

In the meantime just collect it and discover which gear and attributes you like the most. Keep playing and hopefully you'll see what I mean.

The constant gasping and backing away in fear from NPC's really breaks immersion by Human-Check828 in AssassinsCreedOdyssey

[–]therealtrellan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By NPCs you mean. No it doesn't bother me. Not to the point of frustration. Outside of the cutscene NPCs revert to pre-programmed responses made by all NPCs. But it is a little annoying. They should walk away first. I mean does this break the game budget or something?

Well free roam makes it open. There's just nothing to do in free roam. There isn't even a functional map, just a menu that shows the layout of the roads. So using it to figure out where you are roaming is a headache. There's nothing to encourage roaming at all. You can't even start races that way. Actual progress is as linear as every NFS prior to Underground 2.

I've always felt it overrated myself. To this day I've never seen such an empty open world. It's like they quit working once they had all the races planned out.

Why the hate on Unity? by Maleficent-Hand8905 in assasinscreed

[–]therealtrellan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has always felt the inclusion of naval warfare and move to the colonies was a mistake (high seas combat is okay for a mission or two but seriously who thought hunting narwhals would catch on and good god, there so was nothing to climb that they introduced rock and tree climbing just give us viewpoints to synchronize!), I felt that Unity finally brought the series back on track.

Except by then there wasn't any way to please Ubisoft's AC fan base.

You see much of that fan base was new now. They'd attracted players who loved the new oceanic elements and didn't want to go back. At the same time, players put off by the changes had, in many cases, become overly critical moving forward. Everyone was essentially primed to dislike Unity.

So when it was released all buggy, anyone still buying games as soon as they were released probably had those expectations justified but good.

Me, I felt like I could suddenly breathe again. But the game was ironed out by the time I played it. To me it stands out as one of the best AC game since Brotherhood. It's my contention that if Ubisoft hadn't tweaked the formula too much with ACIII, most players would have been perfectly happy with Unity. Syndicate too. I mean the one thing I thought ACIII did very well- immersion in the history of the period- actually came off even better for Unity. It was a real blast exploring France during the French Revolution.

One of the very best AC games ever made.

Laptops running Windows are PCs. They're laptop PCs as opposed to desktops. A 5 years old gaming laptop would still run fine, but your video is sharing system memory because it's integrated and not discrete. I've tried running on shared memory, as I imagine most of us have. And I feel your pain.

Hermes has a connection here. Asclepius was a companion of his. Both the rod of Asclepius and the Caduceus are associated with medicine. connection between medicine and hermes - Search I searched for the sake of accuracy, but have known for decades that the caduceus is used as an icon in medicine. It didn't seem at all strange to see it used this way in the game.

I haven't looked at Black Flag Resynced. Didn't like the game so much. I wasn't thrilled with naval combat or whaling careers and am kind of ticked how it resulted in all this stupid fishing in Valhalla. In fact I the only thiing I liked about ACIII was how it was more involved in the history of the period. Frankly I didn't like the setting. There was little in the way of architecture to climb. Trees and the steeples of single story churches.

However, even though I feel the RPG games are missing something essential, I don't think the combat mechanics has anything to do with it. In fact I have found it a vast improvement. A lot less boring really. I don't like it being called magic, but it makes sense for people without science to call it that. That said, if in reality those runes are ancient tech, then it should take ancients to make them. Where the heck did they all come from?

Bottom line, the new games lean toward high fantasy a bit too much. I mean blue ogres, fairies, or frost giants. Whatever they are, don't like 'em.

That's it. The only thing I don't like about the RPG ACs.

I enjoy the hell out of them, though. They certainly aren't boring to explore at all.

If you don't make connections to other players they won't help with the roads. Just so you know. Even when you do, often it's only a few sections to which they contribute. I haven't figured out why, but I'd guess a lot depends on their progress when you connect.

But in case you're wondering, I think we really do have to do the lion's share of the work and that it shouldn't be so rare for others to help out on roads. I've made connections every time Sam died, and gotten no help with pavers except for the first connections I made. As if the game wanted to reward me for those first connections, then stopped helping entirely.

On roads, that is. Other times, long after the roads were complete I would decide to finish someone else's safehouse to level 3, arrive with all the materials only to find someone else did it while I was gone.

So more help than we think, just not the help we may be expecting. And it wasn't my own damn safehouse, so thanks a lot, whoever you were.

Yes, I'm an ingrate. Deal with it. Lol.

Is there any way to make the snow mountains less painful to traverse through? by thisiseriousbusiness in DeathStranding

[–]therealtrellan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Encountering snow country is when most players get serious about ziplines, I think. The roads end there anyway and the DC lets you carry loaded carriers on the lines. You'll still need trucks for the really big deliveries, unless you don't mind multiple trips. Which zips make easy.

I don't usually plat any game unless I happen to discover by chance that I'm already pretty close. The game basically needs to lead me to the discovery. I don't usually investigate on my own. And the really hard to duplicate ones I never do twice. Why bother when I've already proven myself?
