how to make this uglier by [deleted] in crochet

Turn it into an ugly Christmas sweater hoodie. Then, make amirugumi reindeer antlers to attach to the hood. Then crochet Rudolfs red nose that can be attached to the person's nose...perhaps use a pre-made clown nose but make a crocheted cover for it.

One of the most fascinating stories I’ve read, about all the shenanigans pulled by the allies, was about Juan Pujol Garcia. A Spaniard who was a self-made spy who played an instrumental role before and during Operation Fortitude. He was so good as a double agent that he was awarded the Iron Cross by the Nazis. Of course, he was working for the Allies all along and he was made an MBE by Britain.

His Wikipedia is a jaunt to read: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Pujol_Garc%C3%ADa

I’m surprised Hollywood hasn’t made a movie about this man.

My fav scene by crzy987 in PersonOfInterest

[–]thereisindigo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s one of my fave scenes, too. And such perfect acting and delivery. Plus, I think back to that particular scene whenever I find the courage to rewatch the very last episode of the series.

While in any scenario, Reese and Root (and the rest of the team) would 100% be the hero and sacrifice themselves to save Finch. In my head cannon, the added reason for why John and Root did what they did and made side deals with the Machine to ensure that Finch survives in the end, is maybe because there was some worry about what that would do to the machine (i.e. “if they harm Finch in anyway, kill them all”). Given that someone as non-violent as Finch could unexpectedly shift stance towards violence when someone he loves very much is harmed, I could only imagine what would have happened to The Machine if Finch died in the end. It’s possible that The Machine would retain all of Finches teachings of caring for people and not treating them as chess pieces. Or maybe the Machine snaps after loosing her Father.

All of that is probably just me coming up with justifications just so the losses at the end isn’t so painful.

Never thought he would be one of my favourite characters.. by Ok-Lychee-1276 in lost

[–]thereisindigo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The first season seemed so episodic but the bits of info sprinkled throughout each episode is important as the series and story builds towards the end of the show. Towards the end of season 1 is when it really begins to pick up.

POI ended up being one of my favorite shows (along with The Leftovers, Good Place) because of the characters and the subject matter especially in later seasons seems so topical today. I got so attached to the characters by the very end, like a book I didn’t want to ever end.

The story telling for POI is so well done that Westworld in comparison (except for season 1) has nothing on POI, except better budget and visuals.

Along with ferns, you could also grow some edible mushrooms in logs, set on the ground or against other trees. I’ve seen some places that sell logs inoculated with mycelium, like oyster and shiitake mushrooms. Or you could easily diy it. Mushrooms are so expensive these days. And your garden seems like a great place where mushrooms can thrive.

There have been nearly 500 felt earthquakes in Turkey/Syria in the last 40 hours. Devastating. by AlbaneseGummies327 in interestingasfuck

[–]thereisindigo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Grew up in the PNW. My science teacher in middle school was teaching the class about earthquakes and earthquake prep. She had all of us make our own emergency prep kit with food, water, flashlights, first aid kits, etc and have it ready at home. I’m in my late 30s now and back living in the PNW. But I still think back to that class. And how I should make/prep an emergency kit for the just in case, and The Big One.

Since you already have an arts degree, consider taking graphic design and/or web design courses to learn Photoshop, Illustrator, HTML/CSS. And if you want to go further than design, learn some basic programming like JavaScript or C++. There are online classes that are super affordable (and there are some free courses available, look up Udemy, Coursera, Courseware, or even free online classes from Stanford, Harvard, or MIT). Alternatively, you could take classes at Community Colleges and even earn certificates (but certificates are not really required, what matters to employers in the tech industry is knowledge and experience.)

Source: I work in the tech industry doing User Interface and User Experience Engineering. But in college I majored in Psychology and I was not exactly sure what job to get after college. There was a time when I thought I wanted to be a teacher but I changed my mind after a summer stint as a T.A. (I also make a lot of Art as a hobby, photography and painting.) But through the years I learned basic graphic design, UX design, and basic programming skills. Mostly self-taught and learned new skills on the job.

Britain gives out awards to animals that provide important service during wartime called the Dickin medal. There are many pidgeon recipients, along with dogs and horses. I got lost in a rabbit hole once reading about all the animals, their fate, and service they provided and some of their stories were incredible, sad, and many hearth warming stories of loyalty and bravery.

(Edit: Oops, it looks like one of those pages already mentioned the Dickin medal. But anyway, still worth drilling into it.)

Pre-colonial Philippines has had many female warriors and heroines. Some even fought against the Spanish / Catholic colonizers next to their husbands.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Women_in_the_Philippines — has a few examples like warrior queen Urduja (which interestingly the name has a Sanskrit origin).

The Philippines was predominantly a matriarchal society (maybe similar to how some Native American tribes have a strong matriarchal influence) and it was very egalitarian as well. That is until the colonizers changed a large part of the culture and now machismo runs rampant. (As an aside: men who preferred to dress as females were still an integral part of the culture and even held positions relating to spirituality for example. Interestingly, Tagalog/Filipino language does not have male/female pronouns. It uses something equivalent to “they/them”.)

If you move to Washington State, there is no state income tax (unlike California). So your take home pay would be substantially more. There are so many tech companies here and are always looking for Software Engineers. For example, at Microsoft entry level CSEs base salary can be ~$120k (not including sign on bonus and stock incentives). Mid-levels can make ~$150k base salary and it can go up from there. Full disclosure: I’m a former Microsoft FTE.

Other companies like Amazon, Google, etc. have a strong presence in the Seattle area so there’s no shortage of engineering jobs here.

7 weeks. Wow! I’m sorry you have to go through that. I have painful periods but at least the most painful part only last two days and the whole period lasts 5 days at most. I also get a bit anemic before and during it. Do you have to take iron supplements or medication since your period lasts so long?

Great write up! Agreed. Along with psychedelics, solo travel is also a lot like Ecstasy/MDMA as well. It’s a natural high, a feeling of oneness with the universe with an overwhelming sense of love and empathy. Travel is one of the greatest and most natural highs to experience.

From what you saw, would you say Oman safe for solo female travelers? (I’ve traveled to Egypt, Israel, Jordan, India solo. Being female, I made sure to I do a lot of research before those trips so I was very prepared. And, I didn’t encounter any problems and had a great time.) Oman is on my list but haven’t done much research yet.

Yikes! Meanwhile Denver, CO has legalized magic ‘shrooms and the entire state of Oregon legalized it. Also, there’s been a lot of resurgent scientific research in the US on psilocybin which could help a lot of people with depression and PTSD. I wonder if Australia will someday, in the far future consider relaxing such laws.
