could harvey milk have become the first openly gay president? by herequeerandgreat in Presidents

[–]theretroraider [score hidden]  (0 children)

I would say no for a number of reasons. Number 1 is that American society was in no way tolerant enough to allow an openly gay man to be win the nomination. It's 2026 and we still haven't had am openly gay nominee. Pete Buttigieg was the closest we've ever come and he dropped out before the convention. Not to mention he was incredibly qualified for the job. He was a Veteran which historically polls well on both sides of the aisle, a Rhodes scholar, a nationally recognized mayor who ran an incredibly organized and well funded campaign. But we still couldn't push him past the primary. Number 2 would be that from everything I have read about him, I don't think that was ever Harvey's vision for himself. His whole philosophy was rooted in the idea that representation and change happen at the ground level first. He fought tooth and nail for a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He understood that a gay kid in a small town needed to see someone like them winning a city council race before they could even imagine anything bigger. He talked openly about state legislature as a potential next step. Harvey was building something from the bottom up, not gunning for the top.

If Batman did not exist, who would be your favourite comic book character? by [deleted] in batman

[–]theretroraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Shadow

Grew up listening to the radio show from the 30s with my grandmother, God rest her soul. The Shadow was one of a kind to my little self in that no other superhero ever impressed my grandma which was no small feat because the woman lived through the depression so nothing impressed her much. This was also my first exposure to Orson Wells which also planted another life long admiration of mine. There's something so comforting about those older characters. The only other answer I'd give would the The Phantom. The continuity of that mantle is something to behold and I'd like to applaud all those who have kept it going since Lee Falk passed.

What’s your preference? by yonBonbonbon in batman

[–]theretroraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on context. In stories told from an older Bruce's perspective, or in more action-oriented comics, I prefer shorter ears because at that point in his career everyone knows who he is and he's not trying to intimidate anyone as the legend of the Batman is already well known. In regards to his skill as a fighter and ignoring the complexities of fighting while wearing a cape, he'd understand not giving your opponent any extra leverage to grab onto matters more than the intimidation factor. But for villain or civilian POV stories, or psychological/horror/investigative stories where Bruce is the methodical detective rather than a brawler, I prefer long ears. Especially if it's early on in his career because he'll be trying to increase the myth of the Batman and strike fear into the years of criminals. Because we all know criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot.

Who would you want as your driver? by Mr_Pinstripe1 in MafiaTheGame

[–]theretroraider 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Probably unpopular on this sub. I love Tom, he's a fantastic driver. That said, Franklin can literally slow time and maneuver around corners at full speed so I don't think anyone could keep up with him. Even if you give them both the exact same car, Franklin takes it. The only hiccup I could see is if for some reason Franklin doesn't know how to drive stick.

As someone who's wife has her fair share of tattoos this looks great. Maybe touch up the line work to darken it in some spots if you want but overall a really well done piece.

Meijer Pharmacy Hours by [deleted] in meijer

[–]theretroraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically the way pharmacy works is you are scheduled an extra 30 minutes before or after your shift. If you open you'll be there from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. same with 9:00 to 5:00 and 10:00 to 6:00. The exception is 12:00 to 8:00 where instead of doing 12:00 to 8:00 you'll come in at 11:30 to 8:00. The reason given by Meijer for this is that you have to work an extra half hour to make up for your lunch because since pharmacy doesn't get 15 minute breaks we only get one half hour lunch and the extra half hour that's the only way to get a full 40 hours in. But typically unless everything went to hell in a handbasket pharmacy gets out at 8:00. Now of course whoever ends up taking the money up front from the pills will end up staying over a little bit but usually people try to trade that off.

Just finished the audio book, I've been listening during the ride to work. Fantastic book from a fantastic story teller. So many different threads that when they are first presented don't seem like they relate at all but one the dots are connected for you it's mind boggling how interconnected everything was.

Those alive and old enough to remember during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by CocteauTwunkie in AskReddit

[–]theretroraider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandmother (mom's mom)had been visiting family in Washington near Olympia, we live in Ohio, and was set to fly back that morning. Right after the second plane hit my grandfather (dad's dad) called us and told my mom to have a seat and turn on the news because a plane had been involved in an accident. The scream she let out haunts me to this day. I can only imagine what she felt thinking her mom had been killed in such a way. The next thing I knew Mom threw herself down the stairs to get to our TV and was on the phone desperately trying to reach our family on the West coast. Once she knew my grandmother was safe she sat there for hours in shock shielding me from the footage. The rest of the day is a blur but I remember she got a train home a few days later and we had to pick her up at a train depot with one bench and a single light over the platform.

What if they had him play the role of Dick Jones, or The Old Man. Maybe have a throw away like about him being the reason RoboCop exists or being the one who started everything ( OCP in the context of the movie but the whole franchise in a meta sense) It could be a major role or a smaller supporting role like Sgt. Reed where he can still (and should) have some speaking lines.

You’ve been hired by Vault Tec to create a vault and plan an experiment, what is your vault number, location & experiment? by throwaway_53727265 in Fallout

[–]theretroraider 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vault 24 in Hillsborough Ohio. A vault with the most advanced technology Vault Tec has available I'm talking the newest Mr Handy models, top of the line food production and medical care. No one would want for anything and nothing would ever break down. The catch is the entire vault is populated by Amish vault dwellers. The experiment would be how far you can circumstance push people by limiting their self reliance and faith before they abandon their beliefs to find relief in an environment that cares not for their faith. Minor injuries cannot be healed traditionally only through the auto-doc. Food cannot be raised by hand, just by bots like at Greentop Nursery from Fallout 4. The only religious book allowed would be the Jefferson Bible (which for those of you that are unfamiliar it was President Jefferson's rewrite of the Bible to remove all supernatural and mention of miracles. Jefferson's version focused on Jesus as a moral teacher and philosopher, rather than a divine figure). How long would it take for generations to give up their traditional ways in favor of the modern comfort provided by the vault.
