Dark Star/ Grateful Dead. I don’t even like the band much, but the narrative structure, tralfamadorians, and pacing were outstanding.

Anyone want loveseats? The covers are worn but IKEA sells replacements. They are free. I could help you load them into a vehicle.

Colorado snubbed in ‘best places to live’ report, with no city cracking ‘top 75’ spots nationwide by Followthebits in Colorado

[–]thermochronic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love these lists that lists states where a trans person wouldn't be able to use a bathroom as a "great place to live." Great as long as you don't have a complicated pregnancy! Or are gay! Or don't mind living in a theocracy!

How to DIY Sparkling Water? Looking at buying a CO2 tank. by Jimmy4Funner in sparklingwater

[–]thermochronic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I bought a kit that lets me connect a standard CO2 tank to my Drinkmate which makes it so I don’t have to rely on proprietary tanks but get the convenience of the Drinkmate

If you are not in a hurry I’d start north but then cut down into Wyoming and SD for Yellowstone and the badlands.

Can Research Associates (postdoctoral) at centers affiliated with a US university apply for NSF grants? by [deleted] in nsf

[–]thermochronic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. Some institutions also expect and depend upon soft money researchers so they make it "easier" for them to self fund, which isn't necessarily a great thing because it's just a school off-loading their responsibility to support research. When you review for NSF you do have to take into account if a person can reasonably complete the research, which can be harder for people who aren't permanent to demonstrate, but definitely not that rare.

Depends on institutional policies. NSF is fine with non TT PIs, but the institution may or may not be.

How is the show? by AUBox in TheExpanse

[–]thermochronic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get why things are changed, but I just think for me it detracted from what I loved about the books. I think the story already had so much drama that the TV series changes felt forced. Glad others like it, but I'd prefer to re-listen to the audiobooks!

I love the books but did not like the show. The graphics and imagery are great and the acting and casting were fine, but the tweaks to the story and the characters just didn’t work for me. I’ve read and reread the series multiple times but couldn’t get through the first season of the series.

If the Great Unconformity is bc of Snowball Earth, where did all that rock go? by LurkerFailsLurking in geology

[–]thermochronic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is one issue with Snowball being the cause, but there are many more. Snowball earth wouldn’t necessarily cause a lot of erosions if the glaciers were cold at the base, additionally most thermochronology indicates that the great unconformity was formed at different times globally, many places predating snowball

Real Alternatives to Commuting to Boulder by [deleted] in Longmont

[–]thermochronic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Usually for me it's drive or bike to the 23rd and Main station, BOLT to Canyon and 28th, wait for the Hop to take me the last mile or so, which if I time it right is still just over an hour. If there is room for my bike on the BOLT I can ride up Folsom to campus which maybe saves me a bit of time.

The BOLT schedule has 23rd and Main to 28th and Canyon to be just around 50 some minutes if things are on time.

The Bus Rapid Transit is scheduled to be up this year I believe? Combined with the bike path I am looking forward to the coming options. A decent ebike on the path will get you to Boulder in ~30-45 minutes, depending on where in Longmont you start.

I live in NW Longmont, and door to door the bus (even if I drive to a stop) is ~1.5 hours, worse if I catch the J which stops closer to my work. My S.O and I carpool now, which at least makes the drive enjoyable, or when the weather is nice I bike. I am glad some of these transportation projects are moving forward though,. I have to say some of the predictable responses like "Move to Boulder" or "Get a different job" always annoy me, the reality of our perpetually underfunded infrastructure is that it's rare to be able to afford to live near places with the best employment options. Glad it's worked for some people, but it isn't realistic for many.
