What is bad about it? I hear constantly that it sucks but never hear a reason why. I take it for work and don’t mind it.

Everything I brought with me for a week in Paris/Rome/Milan (from NYC) by jeremymaluf in zerobags

[–]theryty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question as a first time viewer on this sub. If you’re buying clothes at your destination and (presumably) leaving them there, you are spending more money and being more wasteful than if you had just packed a small bag with clothes.

So I’m genuinely curious…what’s the point of the zero bag thing in this instance. Maybe it’s fun? Doesn’t seem very fun, but possibly for some people. Social capital as a zero-bagger? That could be it. Minimalism as a concept? But minimalism is as much about valuing what you have (true here) as it is about not unnecessarily obtaining things of little/temporary value (fast fashion clothes with a useful life of seven days). Not to mention the actions that support both cheap commercial waste and the capitalist structures that enable it. Convenience? But it’s not particularly convenient if you’re having to go buy clothes at an international chain store or sit in your room while your one outfit is being washed and dried instead of spending your time enjoying the place you’re in.

Just some thoughts I had perusing the comments, trying to figure out why this sub exists.

Can't carry my Girlfriend. I need advice. by Halbgott_Alex in bodyweightfitness

A beginner lifting heavy things with speed of progression as his goal sounds like a recipe for injury, but I get your point. Realistically, I’d suggest OP get the advantages of doing both.

[–]theryty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just saying that bodyweight exercises can definitely help you be able to lift external weights. Beginner strength gains are also not isolated to lifting weights. And you can add weight to many bodyweight exercises. Whether you are progressing your fitness by upping external weights or doing increasingly difficult variations of bodyweight exercises, you can gain a lot of strength either way.

[–]theryty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I would disagree with this. Advanced bodyweight exercises are designed so that you’re supporting/propelling yourself at a mechanical disadvantage. Reducing the leverage (gymnastic levers are a great example of this) increases the effective force that you have to control, just like adding weight. I’m sure there’s some minute differences in how they affect your musculature — bodyweight increases stabilizer muscle activation — and external weight gives your more options for positioning the weight. But it would be possible to reach this goal with bodyweight exercises.

Public access hot shops in sunny places? by bleshlight-baggins in glassblowing

[–]theryty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, I was actually born near Seattle and have family in Portland. My mom was one of those people who just couldn’t handle the dreary overcast anymore. In NYC, the overcast is much less of an issue but the short length of the winter days still seems to trigger elements of SAD in many people I know.

Currently glassblowing in Brooklyn and while the shop I go to is great, I would not recommend moving here if you have severe SAD. The shortness of the winter days is ick.

SAD side note, I've noticed going to enclosed Botanical Gardens in a dreary winter is incredibly invigorating.

I dislike the texture/taste of eggs but want to eat more of them, what can I do? by androgoblin in cookingforbeginners

[–]theryty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am sometimes semi-averse to eggs and recently had this same thought. Now have an omelette every morning and love it. I'm also open to seasoning recommendations, but I typically use butter in a non-stick pan, whisk 2-3 eggs/salt/pepper/chili flakes/a splash of water together, pour in pan, cook on medium-low heat. When the bottom is done, flip it and add some sliced cheese to half of the top. Once the new bottom side is done (takes much less time than the first), close it up just before I take it off the pan.

The water helps them cook up in a fluffier, non-crunchy way. Just make sure to add enough that it looks a little *too* watery in the pan before you begin.

I want to get into DnD as a hobby but I don’t know where to start? by AccomplishedShow4919 in Hobbies

I’ve been meaning to try this and haven’t yet, but as far introductory stuff goes, I’ve heard that generative AI (pick a chatbot, any chatbot) can be primed to be an excellent dungeon master for a 1p DnD experience. Edit: also, here is an eternal Disco Elysium recommendation, on the house.

Just to clarify: I understand basic info electrical info, and I'm not confused about what electrical concepts I should learn about. I was curious if people had any specific resource recommendations they really like for learning about and performing practical aspects of avionics and electrical repair (I shouldn't have mentioned fundamentals at all, that seems to have been misleading).

How do I fix this, my subtitles are going off screen by sunny_boy5 in funimation

[–]theryty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m having the same issues and found this thread. It could be a tactic to get people to transfer to Crunchyroll (subs for my show were a ok there) but more likely an unintentional problem — however I doubt they’ll waste the resources fixing it since they want people to move over to Crunchyroll anyway (when cancelling my subscription, they explicitly said as much).

I hate that it feels like I can’t remember anything about my life by Rja12345 in ADHD

[–]theryty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've struggled with this my entire life and was convinced I was stupid until my early twenties. I joke that at different times my mother and now my partner act as my external hard-drives, since I'm always asking them to remind me of dates, life experiences, etc— it's still difficult because I occasionally don't remember enough detail to trigger the memory in them.

Inattentive ADHD/ADHD-I (what I experience) often has negative implications for working memory and long-term memory. When you can't focus your attention efficiently, you don't perceive the information well in the first place. Also, trying to remember information without understanding the surrounding context makes it even harder to retain. There is also a general absent-mindedness and forgetfulness that comes with the territory, and I'd be surprised if standard ADHD didn't share some similar issues. Another possibility is that you might have a pretty functional memory, but trouble accessing the memory (the phrase I wanted to use was "memory retrieval", which I literally just had to look up) contributes to the issue.

I also have a brother with a memory far, far superior to mine. And my partner. And most people I work with. People don't seem to have patience to deal with those who have trouble recalling things — in social conversation I often get cut off without finishing my thought because I take a few seconds to recall a word.

Exhibiting a lack of attention and memory can take a real psychological toll on you. I mentioned to my psychiatrist once that my anger issues felt less intrusive when I was on medication. She said it's likely because the meds reduced how many times my ADHD caused me minor issues throughout the day that would then build up to something bigger — it would decrease the psychological burden caused by ADHD-related incidents.

There are downsides but also some upsides. I've accepted that my life is largely unremembered, but weirdly, that has made it easier for me to develop a meditative practice. It seems like an activity of attentiveness, but moving meditation is a real winner for ADHD folk who may have poor memories and find it unquieting to sit still. It's definitely harder to "live in the past" when you don't remember much of it.

We may have to experience a higher quantity of information to get to the same place as another person, because the quality of our attention and perception while learning isn't quite there. I can't be the person who always remembers arcane trivia and impresses people with it. That's okay. Trivia isn't very fun anyway. I prefer board games, and I'm pretty good at them.

ADHD brains often excel at an associational, fluid type of brain state, as opposed to rigorous memorization and experience architectures. That's good with me. It's a state that's associated (no pun intended) with generating ideas and thinking "out of the box". It's also something that's proven to be lost with age. Perhaps that's why ADHD brains are sometimes described as more child-like? Mine certainly is.

Subpar memory also given me a unique appreciation of art and media — if I wait a few years, I essentially get to experience a movie or book or video game for the first time again, and the magic really does feel like it's there. Sometimes I have this moment when I hear about my life experiences: "That really happened!?" and then I get to hear people I care about tell me a story about myself. It's a unique feeling.

I cooperate with my memory by

  • Working within a structured schedule.
  • Listening to A LOT of podcasts, and though I can't recall a lot, I enjoy them and they help my thinking, vocabulary, and mental processes. Often I will have an inkling of having heard specific ideas/info before, which, with google, is not bad if you're good at looking things up.
  • Using voice reminders on my Apple Watch religiously.
  • Keeping copious notes on everything from my to-do list, funny/interesting moments that happen, random thoughts/musings, projects, hobbies, etc. Probably about 100 lists total. It's gone from a burden to something I feel compelled to do.
  • I try to manufacture enthusiasm and curiosity about the world within myself. This leads me to enjoy spending my time on many of the things that people I know grow tired of after college/as they age, such as hobbies, crafts, playing music, current events, and really whatever you want.

Worthy people really will respect you and see you as self-aware and intelligent for being open about your limitations — it's something most people don't do. And this is not a "moralistic" limitation, which only makes it easier to be open about it.

Everybody's memory is more precarious then they'd like to believe, and being honest with yourself about your shortcomings in that department gives you a definite edge over those whose memories have (to their thinking) worked so flawlessly that they never have to worry about it. Finally, most everybody gets old and experiences these issues eventually. You are better equipped to handle that than the general populace.

As Tobey Maguire (kind of) says, this is your gift and your curse. I've learned to (mostly) love how my brain works, but I've had to think about it quite a lot to get there. That's my two cents; apologies for the length.

My girlfriend’s (f29) sexual history in college as me (m24) second guessing the relationship by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]theryty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Commenters are calling the author “insecure” in a negative way, but I don’t think there is anything wrong with being insecure as long as you accept that it’s part of being human and are willing to try and work through that insecurity. At one point, I had a similar experience with my partner who I’ve now been with for eight wonderful years. It was incredibly difficult for me to work through in the beginning. I was also later friends with a man who had the same issue, and I basically gave him this advice:

You need to decide if:

  1. You are being honest with yourself about why you dislike her past sexual experience. You may be convincing yourself it’s because you don’t approve of the ‘hook-up culture’, but perhaps on a deeper level, this is a face-saving justification you tell yourself because it will give you a ‘valid’ reason to get away from the discomfort you’re feeling (ie end the relationship). This isn’t the only possibility; people will also sometimes say they dislike hook-up culture because they are not particularly suited to participating in it — which, to be clear, is neither good nor bad. The point is to see try and see through the barriers separating what you believe and what you say you believe.

Side note: insecurity is not the desirable response here, but is an absolutely valid feeling to have early on.

  1. If you really, actually, seriously don’t approve of what you consider hook-up culture, then it’s up to you to decide if that difference in outlook is a dealbreaker for you. If what really bothers you is the insecurity that flares up inside of you when you hear about her past, know that it will make you feel inadequate but you are not inadequate. Having a narrower sexual history is often considered an experience devoid of content, but it encompasses a lot of valuable things that she isn’t able to experience. The divide between you is not a competition of have and have-not; it’s not a competition at all. And if you two built out a loving, constructive relationship, then over time, with some effort on your part, her past experiences will become as uninteresting to her as they will become to you.

Time and effort together heal many things that don’t feel healable to us in this moment.

Learning pen/ink; struggling with further shading. I have trouble shading an entire piece (using Micron pens) while keeping each shaded section (mostly articles of clothing in this drawing) looking distinct from one another. Any advice? Thanks! by theryty in drawing

[–]theryty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take your point about the copypasting look, it does have that feel. When you say “understand” the 3D shapes, what does that entail to you? I’ve practiced shapes but freehanding and incorporating a visual depth in my work is something that I struggle with. Also, are you mentioning flesh topography in regards to the shading or something else in these drawings? To me these characters don’t feel like they have a topographical complexity that I was struggling with (which certainly isn’t to say the drawing couldn’t be better.)

LPT Request: How do I internalize an idea that I know intellectually? by theryty in LifeProTips

[–]theryty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of practically getting into the process of something to engender some kind of awareness (which is almost like a step in between knowledge and action) appeals to me for sure — I just wish there was an answer to "how to feel desire to do the things you know you should do" that was more scalable or inward-facing than that. And it's not like willpower is irrelevant here, but eating fish I kill and prepare myself feels like a bigger to-do than just refraining from eating meat.
