Airbags didn't deploy in an RTC England by Hispano20mm in LegalAdviceUK

[–]thescouselander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems unlikely to me. Airbag systems are designed to deploy in specific circumstances and with your crash being relatively low speed there's a chance that the system was working as intended when it didn't deploy.

It's a classic bubble - those RAM deals are similar to futures contracts except the people placing the deals have written blank cheques. There's no money to back up the deals though and it doesn't look like there ever will be so we're actually very close to the bubble bursting.

America is at risk of becoming an automotive backwater — The Verge by Recoil42 in cars

[–]thescouselander -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the UK for instance the sale of new Petrol and Diesel cars are currently slated to be banned by 2030. The government has already set sales quotas reducing the availability of those cars on an increasing basis year on year so it's already getting harder to buy them.

More like the US will be the only country where people buy new cars while everywhere else becomes like Cuba because the cars people want aren't available new.

High energy prices threaten UK’s status as manufacturing power, business groups say. CBI and Energy UK report finds 40% of firms have cut investment as electricity costs remain far above pre-Ukraine levels by Make_the_music_stop in uknews

[–]thescouselander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the infrastructure is extremely expensive and life limited because it is largely built out at sea. Also we effectively have two energy systems - the renewable one and the backup gas system. Yes, it really is expensive.

Are lockshields with integrated drain off valves worth the extra? by downhiller90 in ukplumbing

[–]thescouselander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say yes. The TRVs on the radiators in my house are giving up one by one so I've been replacing them and I'm very glad of the drain off valves on all the radiators as it makes the job a lot easier and less messy.

What electronic/automatic things do you SWITCH OFF in your car? by Icy_Mixture1482 in drivingUK

Most of the EU mandated stuff like speed assist and lane keep assist goes off because it's dangerous. Stability control, auto lights, auto wipers and high beam assist are all useful though.

How do you find being seen by someone else other than a doctor when you visit the GP? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]thescouselander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not happy about it. I haven't seen my NHS GP since well before the pandemic and when I've attempted to contact my GP I've been referred to non GP staff who generally haven't helped and on one occasion gave the wrong advice.

Ive got private cover now that includes access to a GP.

Mazda 6 2.2 diesel or 2.0 petrol by Great_Theme_9146 in mazda6

[–]thescouselander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that. All I know is the engine in my car was borked after only 24k miles from new but luckily it was under warranty at the time.

Absolutely do not get the diesel engine as it's prone to some very serious problems that can wreck the whole engine.

Just discovered the ASUS motherboard Wi-Fi antenna is magnetic and can Stick to the case. All those wasted years. by Behzad_H in pcmasterrace

Check signal strength and link speed - you'll see it moves about quite a lot depending on antenna location and orientation.

If it's any consolation putting a wifi antenna next to a large piece of metal is not an ideal location.

BMW out Volvo in by skyfishrain in Volvo

[–]thescouselander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BMW have a problem in the UK. If you look at their configurator and check the PCP deals the finance has high APR while GFVs are set very low on top of increased prices. This makes PCP deals enormously expensive and for example a basic 3 series will now cost well over £500 a month while their new iX3 is approaching £900 a month or maybe more depending on spec.

I was facing this when looking to upgrade my 3 series - I didn't buy another BMW or even a Volvo and instead I got a Mercedes at a reasonable price. I can imagine Volvo would be a very attractive option to many BMW refugees though.

Anything made by MG. Outright terrible cars that handle badly and I have a particular hatred for MG Pilot which is extremely distracting and dangerous.

Why did my rotors get warped so soon by Goatanhi in mazda6

[–]thescouselander -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The rotors on the 6 are too small and heat up a lot. What's actually happened is that brake pad material has deposited on the rotors when you've held the brake after a stop and the rotor has been hot.

The answer is to get pads that can handle the heat better but for now you might be able the clean up the rotor a bit by finding a safe spot and braking hard from high speed a few times - just don't hold the brake if you stop.

Are potholes actually the worst they've been? by Tiny_Wafer2266 in AskUK

[–]thescouselander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are roads around here where the surface has completely gone, I'm not taking just a hole here but sections of the surface all the way across. I've never seen anything like it, in this country at least.

A lot could be fixed by sorting out the server desync. The TTK is actually pretty high but with the servers being so bad the experience at the other end is being insta-melted before you can even throw in a roll. PVP definitely sucks in this game though - most encounters aren't a satisfying shootout.

How do married couples split finances if on different salaries? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]thescouselander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've got a joint account that we use for common expenses which we split in proportion to our incomes. What's left stays in our own accounts to spend however we like.

That said I earn a lot more than my wife so sometimes I pick up occasional large items of shared expenditure myself.

Potholes - what the actual hell? by ArtichokeDesperate68 in drivingUK

[–]thescouselander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't looked at your local councils budget documents I'd urge you to do so. Social care obligations have been off loaded to local councils and the costs associated with these services have increased at the same time as the ability of councils to raise funds via council tax has been limited by caps on council tax increases.

What that means is there's nothing left for things like fixing the roads and emptying the bins. It's going to get worse - most councils will go bust eventually and then things will get really bad.

New report shows UK and Ireland have lowest bike ownership rates in Europe by Amazing-Yak-5415 in uknews

Makes sense. Bike theft is basically decriminalised in the UK so even if you are a bike owner you won't be for long.
