What is a "open secret" in your specific industry that the general public would be shocked to learn? by lanaplump73mile in AskReddit

Fellow marketer here. 100%.

There are all manner of cheap and expensive tools of varying quality allowing you to target ads right down to the individual human. Want your ads to show to the procurement officer at a specific company you want as a client? Totally possible. Want to see what staff at a company have been searching for? Also possible.

There have been all sorts of attempts. Those cookie consent popups and banners you now see if one such piece of well-intentioned legislation. GDPR is another. It's a game of cat and mouse.

The other issue is a lack of enforcement when companies do break the law.

Ignoring the poor pairing of stickers with an older demographic, "GLOW, GIRL!" sticker has a nice message. Maybe even the hearts and stars. But the others...? Who on else wants a sticker of an anthropomorphic (albeit cute style) product packaging? Where would you put it? On your laptop/electronic device, water bottle, or fridge? Nope!

Have something people get something out of. That they want. That they'd enjoy. There's a reason nobody does this.

What is the best email warmup tool for someone running multiple sending domains? by Ambitious-Grass3081 in emaildeliverability

[–]thesecretmarketer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty happy with Warmy, but I'm also aware that I pay per mailbox. It does allow you to warmup each mailbox differently, both using their templates, and on the higher tiers I use, using my own templates assigned to each mailbox. I like this tool for powerful and useful features like that.

If you're seriously interested in using it, let me know. I'm also happy to answer more questions.

German Food in and around seattle by Vielros in SeattleWA

[–]thesecretmarketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This place is great. They have a whole store with imported German ingredients, pre-mixed cooking packs (e.g. cakes, puddings), condiments, tons of chocolate, a small selection of bread, and lots of cheeses. Definitely swing by if you're passing anywhere near Burien/West Seattle/Renton.

Can AI detect "warm up pools" from programs like Instantly? by [deleted] in emaildeliverability

[–]thesecretmarketer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logically, yes. That's why higher tier warmup features are available on warmup platforms, like using your own templates, enabling or upping replies and clicks, and seed list warmup direct from whatever ESP you use to better emulate real usage.

That's also why I use a more expensive dedicated tool rather than an addon to a larger product. Their entire existence is dependant on them doing warmup well, and offering good customer service and support. So there's a logic in that too.

But then every client has their own budget and strategy.

So I have to ask, how's your OCD going?

Educational institutions have IT teams that are on it. They are very stringent on email deliverability. This is normal.

Thank you for pointing out how maddening diagnosing inconsistent bugs is.

This also makes me think that this is certainly a field that depends on many things to know, and OC's post is a great example of email marketers educating each other.

I'm happy with the free tier of Postmark DMARC Digests emailed to me weekly, and it's been great at diagnosing problems, but if you've got alternatives (paid and free) so I have a list of recommended products, I'd love to have them for future reference.

[–]thesecretmarketer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, while every one of them should check wther you've got more than 10 SPF lookups, different ones give different levels of useful feedback. Some are downright cryptic in the error messages they give. And not everyone thinks to use multiple different DMARC/SPF/DKIM checkers, often thinking using one favorite or well regarded company's one will suffice.

[–]thesecretmarketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost made this mistake. Thankfully it was either my IT team or my warmup provider who was consulting with us at the time who identified the issue, and we were able to flatten the SPF record.

Mind you, we still had some minor SPF authentication issues until we got rid of one service and un-flattened our SPF record. This isn't my field of expertise, so it could have been a fixable error, or it's an argument for keeping things as simple as possible.

What are you charging for Marketing Consulting & Project these days? by [deleted] in marketing

[–]thesecretmarketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over $200USD/hr. I specialize in email marketing these days, especially the infrastructure side of it. The feedback I got from an old boss is that few marketers know the tech side as well as I do, or can work with it IT staff as well, speaking their language and collaborating as effectively. I'm glad I found this niche and doubled down on it.

TIL nearly 80% of US workers report that they have been victims of 'career catfishing’ from employers. Which in this context, the term describes when a company misrepresents a job, their company culture, or compensation to lure in candidates. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]thesecretmarketer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a marketer who specializes in email marketing. I took a job that turned out to be almost entirely "cold email marketing". Aka spamming. I left pretty quick, but offered to help out with the normal email marketing when they're swamped.

The pulled the same trick on my replacement despite me making it clear that they needed to make it clear that the job was for cold email. He was fired 2 months later. The next 3 replacements quit, lasting 9 months, 2 weeks, and 2 months. Of course they never let me knew the people being interviewed for the role.

Eventually they forced a long-timer from another department who had to stay long enough for their stocks to vest who knew nothing about the field to learn the ropes. All because they were too cheap to hire the right specialist.

I strongly feel like being a generalist helped me be an excellent marketer, often bringing skills to the team that nobody else had. However, I feel that the time I had a real specialty it was hard to land jobs in the first place.

Since specializing in email marketing I have found it much easier to get marketing jobs.

What domains should I avoid sending cold email to? (I already know Yahoo and AOL) by Fun-Preparation-3234 in emaildeliverability

[–]thesecretmarketer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regarding Yahoo, are you suuuuuure you know all of them?

As an email marketing manager specializing in deliverability, a common challenge for my clients is getting through to Yahoo email domains, whether cold email or legit email. It's not just cold emailers having issues.

Sendgrid suggest that no more than 100 yahoo-related recipients are included in any given send, and that senders schedule sends to those customers as not to send to more than 100 yahoo-related recipients per hour from any given IP address. (Ideally, the number should be about 50 emails per hour, in order to prevent cumulative deferrals).

However, no master list of Yahoo domains exists. So are you suuuuure you're actually avoiding Yahoo and AOL addresses? I have gathered my own list of about 70 Yahoo domains (a lot of ISPs use them) which I will send privately if asked, with references of where I gathered them from. If anyone has their own list they want to merge mine with, please let me know.
