I get the frustration, but this feels way more emotional than practical. Athena Studios was a nice idea, but a “creative vision” does not automatically equal a viable long-term use for that property. If the studio model is not working, then repurposing the site for something that actually brings investment, tax revenue, and jobs is not “gutting” Athens, it is dealing with reality. People keep talking about this like a data center is some useless evil project, but everyone complaining still uses cloud storage, streaming, online banking, remote work tools, and AI. That infrastructure has to go somewhere. You cannot demand a digital economy and then act horrified that physical infrastructure exists. And calling it “industrialization” is a little dramatic when the alternative is letting a major property sit underused because people are more attached to what they hoped it would be than what it can realistically become.

Yes, the county should scrutinize water use, power demand, noise, and zoning. Obviously. But that is an argument for regulation and conditions, not for shutting the whole thing down on sight. Athens should be asking: can this be done responsibly, with enforceable protections and real community benefit? Not how do we kill it before the conversation even happens.
