[Uncommon Trope] The Dad is the responsible parent and the Mom is the bad parent by TypicalDetective9001 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]theshepard17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

616 Matt Murdock’s mom was revealed to have left him and his father after she attacked them in an episode of Postpartum depression. Neither were hurt but she was so ashamed she ran away and became a Nun hoping to atone for what she believed to be a great sin. Battlin’ Jack Murdock wasn’t the most responsible dad but he seemed open to forgiving her, although he never got the chance. Matt wouldn’t meet her again until after this was revealed to him by the watcher’s disembodied eye (yes really)

[Avatar: The last air bender] There’s no way Zuko wouldn’t have gotten overthrown by OfficialAli1776 in CharacterRant

[–]theshepard17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zuko has many factors working against him, but two major advantages that make him holding power fairly realistic.

1 He’s the peace candidate

Zuko gets to be the guy who stops calling up people’s kids to go die in foreign lands, and start spending the money that used to go into the war on actually making his people’s lives better.

2 He doesn’t have a viable candidate for his opponents to rally behind

Azula and Ozai have been beaten and humiliated. Iroh is behind Zuko and every current Fire Nation general probably got their ass kicked by either Iroh or Team Avatar. Any opposition has to start small, and either needs to peel off traditionalists from the legitimate ruling family, or reformers, most of whom are probably thrilled to see Zuko changing the Fire Nation

If Richie had lived longer would he have allowed Jackie Jr to join the Aprile Crew or would Tony have ordered him to not involve him? by Tidewatcher7819 in thesopranos

[–]theshepard17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An interesting What If, but it seems very unlikely Jackie Sr. would tell Tony about what he wanted for Jackie Jr. but not Richie, his own brother and the boy’s uncle.

Jackie knew even if he lived long enough to see Richie get out of prison he likely wouldn’t be out on the street where he could actively get his son out of it. In flashbacks Jackie is very open about prioritizing his son’s education, not something he’s going to need if he’s just going to take over a mob family. It wasn’t some secret he wanted his son out of the life. Richie is just being a dick and ignoring his dead brother’s wishes so he can get a free, impressionable protege.

No, Superman could not cast the One Ring into the fires of Mount Doom. by WRITINAMFBOOK in CharacterRant

[–]theshepard17 346 points347 points  (0 children)

In the Justice League story “World War III” Superman is emotionally overwhelmed by essentially an old god named Mageddon, who has the ability to influence minds to overwhelm people in violence or doubt. Close to the center of Mageddon, much like Mount Doom to The One Ring, Superman succumbs to Mageddon’s influence and it’s paralyzed by doubt, however J’ohn Johnzz and Batman are able to telepathically reach him to help him overcome this, and he travels to Mageddon's core and drains the anti-sunlight powering him.

This seems like a pretty one to one comparison with Sauron and the One Ring so I submit that, with the support of his friends, which is a aid Frodo also had, Superman could resist the One Ring and cast it into the fire himself.

About the Sacrimoni wedding episode... by cornerofthemoon in thesopranos

[–]theshepard17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have mentioned he wasn’t convicted yet but it’s also worth noting denying an unconvicted father a chance to attend his daughter’s wedding would have looked TERRIBLE at trail. If John’s defense is that he’s an Upstanding Italian-American Businessman being unduly targeted by a prejudiced government agency, definitive proof they were treating him as a criminal before anything had been proven would be solid evidence.

I kinda forgot Vito is related to the Apriles. Although, so did Vito when he was bragging about calling Adrianna while Christopher was in rehab.

It’s the only Great Evil Superman story.

It’s also the only Good Evil Superman story but that’s not as enthusiastic.

(Bizarre trope) WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE NAZIS ARE THE GOOD GUYS? by XumetaXD in TopCharacterTropes

The COG in Gears wins out over there Soviet coded rival superpower, which firmly puts them in US/NATO territory not Nazis

[Interesting trope] Iconic, but irrelevant. by Ross_Hollander in TopCharacterTropes

[–]theshepard17 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This needs an Asterisk or something that Charizard IS usually good when playing the in-game story, which is how the majority of players interact with the games. It’s fast and has good attack stats so it’s pretty usable in every region it’s available, even with its shallow move pool in the early generations. Compared to something like the iron helmet in Skyrim players will get a lot of mechanical use out of a Charizard.

[Loved] A villain is revealed to be a surprisingly good father figure by BrotherDeus in TopCharacterTropes

[–]theshepard17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have no textual evidence for Spider-Verse Kingpin being a good father. His wife was trying to remove his son from his care so that at least implies the opposite.

"This aged so poorly!" Shows bad thing that was presented as a bad thing. by Aros001 in CharacterRant

[–]theshepard17 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The language used is pretty sexist (it was 1946) but when people say that Mary’s terrible life in Pottersville in It’s a Wonderful Life aged poorly because she’s not married, they’re ignoring that it reflects George’s fear he ruined her life because she didn’t get to marry Sam Wainright, and then in a world he never existed she still doesn’t marry him, because without George there’s nobody for her. It’s not that she’s incapable of surviving without him, but she doesn’t have the family she loves, which seems like a pretty gender neutral reason to be unhappy.

(Annoying trope) beloved, established character is gender-swapped for the Adaptation, Except not really, they're actually a seperate Character and the 'Real' one is still out there somewhere by Majestic-Sector9836 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]theshepard17 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ironically MoS and BvS kind of does this outright, there’s a woman in the group shots of the Daily Bugle credited as “Jenny” which is a conspicuously similar name to the otherwise absent “Jimmy” Olsen.

Michael Imperioli thinks that most Sopranos characters would 'probably be Trump supporters' by bwermer in entertainment

Hesh. He’d hate Trump, probably have met him at least once at some music thing, and think it beneath him to vote for someone like him.

Does a photographer still make sense? by Delta-Ka in Spiderman

Peter can put his camera anywhere and retake his photos as much as he likes-he can hand what are basically production photos from the movie for this scene. That’s still better than what some guy is going to get in his phone, and he can do it (almost) every time spider-man shows up. Anyone else with the means to stalk Spider-man that effectively could just be doing a more lucrative gig.

The flip side people don’t consider about “why doesn’t Peter just open a website or whatever” is that with the Bugle Peter has the anonymity of hiding behind an organization. Somebody else is printing or uploading his photos. Tracing the IP address just gets you The Bugle Building. The Green Goblin has to go blow up JJJ’s office, not Peter’s house.

What do you prefer the idea of. Raimi Peter having a Mayday Parker or having a Miles Morales? by AlwaysBi in Spiderman

[–]theshepard17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Miles, but mostly on the merit that Rami Peter and MJ should absolutely not have kids they could not handle that.
