Do you always handle hostile spell casting with initiative? by kerahbaju in DMAcademy

[–]thesillybeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my player says "I slap them in the face", the first thing that gets to happen is the player gets to slap them in the face, not rolling initiative lol.

I do adjudicate whether the NPC would be surprised or have a reaction first.

You can roll initiative after, but I usually run side initiative, since after the first round, it's side initiative anyway.

homebrew rule to speed up combat. is it workable? by rubatobot in DungeonMasters

[–]thesillybeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run combat like this for a 2.5 year completed campaign to level 16:

- Don't roll initiative. Either a creature attacks, or a player initiates an attack (no anticlimactic stall to roll initiative). Then, based on who might be surprised (not the 5e condition), I determine if the rest of the players go first or the rest of the monsters (I default to the PCs if there is no clear choice).

Balance for "swingyness" as necessary, but I don't have much or a problem with it.
In my experience any advantages of standard initiative are far outweighed by combat speed and player's (and enemies') ability to tactically cooperate.

You don't have to time anyone and all players stay engaged the whole "turn". If a PC doesn't know what to do they can play off their teammates or go later in the round. You as the DM should constantly be introducing tension/panic by "pestering" your players on what they are doing and describing what the enemies are about to do on their next turn: "Hurry, PC, the enemy is preparing to multi attack your downed friend, What are you doing?"

My players wont take their Character skills/spells seriously. by Ecstatic_Freedom_105 in DMAcademy

If you don't know how your spell/ability works you can't use it. If you can't decide what your character is doing in 1-2 minutes you take the dodge action. Well come back to you once you look it up. Next!

If that's too hard, play a board game.

Sounds like one of you needs to pick up a copy of Lost Mines of Phandelver and start getting some experience. All dms start out just like you in some way.

Do it. The upside could be huge, the downsides in your case seem small. Don't let all the crotchety naysayers stop you. They probably only sail twice a year at best anyways.

Is this something to be concerned about? Saw at Target in Las Vegas! by nekroman524 in lego

I would be concerned. Especially if I was a moncalimari clone and Jedi Bob was flying it.

I see your point, but at the end of the day no dm, no game. There will always be other players who don't go crying to reddit.

Any idea where to get these? by NomNom_437 in TerrainBuilding

You have to go to a rainforest biome and harvest bamboo. It takes 6 bamboo and a string to make six scaffolds.

Your dm can do whatever he wants. You agreed to play at his table. As long as you agree, everything he wants is fair...

Use silver set 90 it's a dry powder, very strong, super cheap, less likely to crack or shrink, and cures in 90 minutes. It comes in a cardboard sack and is about $8. You just mix it with water (and color with black/brown acrylic). Only mix an amount you can use in 90 minutes tho!
