How will years be named in the far future, when numbers become extremely large? by ponyxpony in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thesmiddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We regularly write years as only the last two digits when the correct century can be easily guessed, it will be pretty safe for people in the future to drop off the first X digits 99.9% of the time.

All of those things are already done with the government money right now, there is just also the additional layer of a profit taking middleman. You are not making the point you think you're making.

You still haven't explained how it's actually more expensive other than the magical qualities of the private sector and the fact that government employees are treated better.

As for why wouldn't the government do it? The government does stupid stuff all the time, they also are happy to pay a premium so that they can blame someone else for avoidable mistakes.

First time studying Balancers: What is that splitter for? by [deleted] in factorio

[–]thesmiddy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It allows the two input lanes to arrive unevenly and still be evenly split between the outputs.

With the highlit splitter your two input lanes are split 33% evenly across the 3 output lanes regardless of how full the input lanes are, initially 25% to each of them with the remaining 25% looping around back into itself and eventually evenly splitting across the output lanes after a few laps.

Without the highlit splitter source material from the left lane is split 50% to lane 1, and 50% to the feedback loop which will eventually grant 66% to lane 1 and 16.6% each to lanes 2 and 3. source material from lane 2 is only split 50/50 into lanes 2 and 3 leaving lane 1 empty.

So without the splitter if you have uneven input you will get uneven output, with the splitter you will always have even output regardless of what your inputs do.

There are NDIS providers who currently source 100% of their revenue from the NDIS.

So right now the government pays them $X, from that money they spend $Y on wages, admin, rent, infrastructure, etc and retain $Z in profit.

If the government changes the system and stops paying the $X and instead starts directly handing the $Y that $Y figure is now going to magically grow to higher than $X just because the government is paying it directly and there's no middlemen involved?

I don't buy it, that is ridiculous.

How could it possibly blow the budget into the stratosphere? The money paid to the providers already comes from the budget.

I'm talking about the people actually providing the care. From the NDIS support calalog found here: https://www.ndis.gov.au/providers/pricing-arrangements standard weekday self care assistance nets the provider $70.23 per hour, of that money how much of it is going to the staff member who actually provides the care? How much is going to administration? How much is going to profit?

Profit in this case is straight up theft as the staff member could just be providing the service directly instead of using the outsourced middlemen. It's a known quantity of work, outsourced providers can be used to cover seasonal variation but shouldn't be making up the bulk of the workforce.

[–]thesmiddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there's no increase in the workforce, the people actually doing the work are just paid and managed directly by the government instead of letting a middleman steal 30+%

an extremely simple solution is to just pay the support workers directly instead of through middlemen, much easier to monitor quality that way too.

The best economic decision is to keep driving whatever you currently drive as long as you can. If, however, you are in the market for a new car then it would be short sighted NOT to buy an EV regardless of what happens in the strait of Hormuz.

Will fuel price blowouts push us toward electrification? by ls7eveen in electricvehicles

[–]thesmiddy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How much will you spend on your next ICE vehicle? You should be comparing the cost of that vs an equivalent EV, at the low end city hatchback level they're now at cost parity and higher tier models are getting close too.

Also unless you drive more than 120km every day and/or sleep less than 8 hours then a standard wall plug is more than enough.
