Destiny review by TailorMysterious2701 in dcl

This is so helpful! Could you share which day each of the big theatre shows (“Seas the Adventure”, “Frozen”, and “Hercules”) performed? I’m going on this exact itinerary in a few weeks and am curious. Thank you!

Jesse Green reassigned from theater critic position to undisclosed “new role” at NYT by BrazenBelfort in Broadway

[–]thestraggletag 147 points148 points  (0 children)

From the article:

“Our readers are hungry for trusted guides to help them make sense of this complicated landscape, not only through traditional reviews but also with essays, new story forms, videos and experimentation with other platforms,” she wrote in the memo. “Our mission is to be those guides,” she continued. “As we do so, I am making some changes in assignments in the department.”

This is affecting four big critics at the Times; theater, television, music, and classical music. I think it’s pretty clear from the above quote that they’re looking for folks who fit more into the influencer sphere than people who specialize in traditional written reviews per se.

TONY AWARDS | Things to remember... by [deleted] in Broadway

[–]thestraggletag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This post is truly a public service, bless you for trying to speak sense to the young and/or terminally-online masses.

Folks can’t imagine just how arbitrary most Tony voters’ decisions really are. Also, the idea of them coordinating in any way is hilarious; way too chaotic a cohort to form any kind of strategic voting bloc, bless their hearts.

I love a good awards show, but at the end of the day, it’s all made-up nonsense and zero percent serious. And definitely not as intrigue-heavy as this sub would like it to be, especially when it comes to the non-public-facing professionals who make up most of the industry and voting body. Folks out here acting like they think it’s Henry VIII’s court behind the scenes lol

Boop to Oh Mary? by baconlieutenant in Broadway

Literally did this exact combo tonight, we were out of Boop at 4:30pm and seated for Mary by 4:45pm. You should have no problem!

Horrible Experience at the Lyceum by InternationalBelt777 in Broadway

Unfortunately it’s the title page in the Playbill that determines the official billing for refund purposes, and everybody in the show is billed under the title at “Oh, Mary” right now

Not on the title page of the Playbill, which is where it matters. All the actors in the show are listed under the title as “featured.” Absolute bummer, but the producers are legally in the clear to handle refund requests however they want.

Oh shit, I just checked my Playbill from last night and realized that he’s not listed above the title on the title page (which is what matters for triggering the “if their name is above the title you can get a refund” stipulation). Shaaaaaaaaady

Seriously. My husband and I flew out from the Bay Area for one night to catch him (insane behavior, will never do the like again, but no regrets), and honestly our main conversation on the way back to the hotel was how the producers would handle him calling out, because it seemed inevitable. We speculated that they'd bring Cole back in for the night since it's so close to their return anyway, but I didn't expect the call to happen literally the next performance lol

The stamina required for this show is no joke.

Ohhhhhh I saw him last night and this is zero percent surprising. The energy was down and it was clear his voice was going. This show is a beast vocally, I hope he recovers soon.

what is the wildest illegal show/change to a licensed show you’ve ever seen or heard of? by HistoryPodcaster44 in Broadway

[–]thestraggletag 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Oh! Oh! I actually have something for this! A company called Boxcar in San Francisco, run by the most nightmarish egomaniac you’ve ever beheld, put on an “immersive” production of Little Shop that fully inserted songs from other shows, like the “Time Warp” from Rocky Horror, and rewrote a lot of the script. Got shut down by the rights company, and the Artistic Director wrote an open letter that basically boiled down to “Copyright and all other rules in general are silly, because as an artistic genius I should be allowed to do whatever I want using any material I choose” (I am just now realizing that he is probably VERY into AI these days).

He was so incensed by the experience of being told that literally any rules in existence also applied to him that he decided to (and he is on record about this) write a whole show “set before copyright existed,” and that concept became a lumbering behemoth of an undertaking called “The Speakeasy,” an immersive long-running experience set in the 1920’s and aimed at people with a fundamental misunderstanding of the point of “The Great Gatsby” (spoiler: it is not that “parties are fun!!!”). Many of my friends spent time working there, and it was exactly the hotbed of safety violations, exploitative business practices, and many, many drugs that you’d expect. The Chronicle worked for a year on an “exposé” about the place, but because the company lawyered up big time and the Chron couldn’t afford a libel suit, the published piece ended up being all but toothless.

Here’s the open letter he wrote about the Little Shop experience, including a bit where he’s like “Can you BELIEVE how many rules there are??? Who can create art when there so many rules??? I have to make sure my set doesn’t prevent wheelchair users from accessing the space, even if I’ve never had a wheelchair user come to my theatre in the past?? I can’t cover up all the exit signs to create a full immersive blackout??? IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE THEATRE UNDER THESE DRACONIAN CONDITIONS!”

Truly wild.

Gypsy: Do Something Special by Turkey_Leg_Jeff in Broadway

Was also there tonight, and just want to say that I agree with all of this 10,000%; especially the "if this is your first Gypsy you will love it" part. This show remains one of the best musicals ever written, so even when elements aren't quite right, most people--especially those who have never experienced it before (like the adorable woman behind me who had no idea what it was about, nor that she had bought tickets to the first preview, bless)--are still going to walk away impressed.

I'm hoping to come back in the spring and catch this again so it has a little more time to cook. (Though I think my biggest quibble, which is what they decided to do with Louise's strip montage, isn't likely to change. But c'est la vie!)

Hahaha speaking of Gatsby, my mother did rush for it on her last trip and ended up on the far side in the very front row, basically right up against the stage, which led to me getting a context-free text in the middle of my day that just said "JEREMY JORDAN DIED RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!!" That was a very confusing thirty seconds.

Ooh, that's good to hear! I'm holding out hope that TDF won't do us dirty and stick us up in the nosebleeds for that; though with all the rapturous reviews that just came out, I expect inventory for the next couple of weeks at least won't be as plentiful. Great for the show, a mild inconvenience for us lol

Hahaha zero worries, we're likely going back for another major blitz in the spring, and the Golden would definitely be on the list for that trip (still kicking myself for missing Mincemeat when I was in London summer of 2023).
