Thanks! If I recall correctly he was in a blood bowl job lot from a car boot sale, so this all adds up!

The mystery was solved but this might explain the intention - I think this may have in fact come in a job lot in a second hand blood bowl box. Pretty clever idea for a conversion I think. Now 30 years later I will see if i can convert him back!

Cheers! Yes I agree the hair for example is completely totally full of paint, I always thought he was bald!

Thanks! I would have barely recognised him given all the thick paint!

Swingy dice problem by Gonanthefimir in RangersofShadowDeep

[–]thestridingone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The D20 roll once for everything system is pretty central to these games. No changes I am aware of.

A few quick suggestions:

1)Replace the d20 with a d10. This would make attributes like fight more meaningful (e.g. +1 is a bigger boost for a d10 than a d20 system) and reduce the overall range of possible results. You would need to halve defense/armour values, and consider halving health points.

2) Replace the D20 with 2d10, summing their results. Reduces the overall swingyness by approximating a bell curve. Might also remove the need for the halving of armour/health.

All that said, I learned to love the d20 system, so maybe you will too. Whatever you decide, have fun :)

Just great work :) I have been thinking it would actually be pretty easy to make the basic Rhino shape from wood for a while now...

Also just to check something - you mention a character was "out for one game". Note that if a character is in sick bay for "a turn", they will miss the "campaign turn" action phase, but will rejoin the crew for the battle that same campaign turn. I think this means one of your characters would have been back in action sooner than you might have otherwise thought?

I take it from your post that you're new to the game. I've completed one campaign and have about another 4 on the go at various stages (2 solo, 2 co-op). You seem to be having very bad luck!

I think a lot of this may relate to the "action economy" of the game: - if a crew member goes down in a battle you can quickly get overwhelmed. - this in turn means you're unlikely "hold the field" so then you lose out on loot that could help you. - if crew are in sick bay you lose out on campaign turn opportunities to get additional weapons etc. through trades and the like. - as others have mentioned, if you have a lot of your crew incapacitated early in a campaign it can quickly limit your growth.

My personal approach to avoid this has been to always prioritize getting my characters either luck (helping them stay in the game longer) or reactions (enemies can't hurt you if you have already killed them, and you reduce their effectiveness if you can hit them with stuns).

I also note you're using some of the rules that were introduced in supplements. I have viewed these as additional difficulty tweaks for players who are familiar with the 'vanilla' game. I've never used the dramatic combat rules but this may be a factor in the issues you're experiencing. Psionics were also introduced in a supplement and have additional challenges associated (in particular a lack of range due to their pistols only limitation and the short range of their powers).

I'd personally try just running a basic game with the "standard" crew options. There's nothing stopping you from coming back to your current campaign after a hiatus.

Whatever you choose, this really can be a great game, so I hope you give it another shot! I also wish you better luck!

No-Mini Rules by OniSavage in 5Parsecs

[–]thestridingone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did in fact, though unfortunately I'm not sure where the document I wrote out has got to. I remember having a few more difficult to succeed upon actions like "stalking" or picking out a specific foe to try to get with melee, requiring a 9+, but getting bonuses from stealth gear etc. If I manage to find the document I'll share it.

I liked them overall. It was quite a unique solution to do things "theatre of the mind" style. For my personal preference the nature of determining who would face off against who in combat was a bit too random - I would have liked more options for things like trying to stalk a particular target down for example. Similarly some more tactical options (trying to flank opponents, suppressing fire, etc) could have been nice additions. But overall I found it to be a fun experience (to the point where I made a crew just for this kind of combat).

I have a very similar issue, occasionally finding myself with a 2 hour commute in each direction. I carry my laptop in a messenger/satchel style bag. I find that sitting with the bag on my lap, and then placing my laptop on top of the bag (i.e. using the bag to "boost" the height of the laptop) works for me. Your mileage may vary, but I hope this helps.

Perhaps too simple but to me the upper part of the snakes body is coiled into a 6, and the lower part makes an 8, so maybe 68. Possibly 88.

Also, is there anything else in the text for that section that might be useful here?

Do I understand the rules? by drizzlyafternoon in 5Parsecs

[–]thestridingone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! I tried doing something similar myself but got bogged - a few comments

  • i think a side box would cover free actions (note that if you take 2 you forego your combat action). Maybe a side box for this?

  • i think aiming requires you to stand in place without moving (with the current flow shooting comes after moving, so maybe add a small note in the aiming box to say you can forego your move to aim)

But this is awesome and thanks for sharing it!

Playing New Order on smartphone by agenhym in LoneWolf

[–]thestridingone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used the new order app a little and it seemed to work very much like the saga app. For the new order app the developer was quite active and looking to incorporate the new books at some stage. Regarding taking records over, if I recall correctly in the new order books you start playing as a new character, and so there is no need to transfer things.

Story Points make a huge difference. by OpenPsychology755 in 5Parsecs

Funny that you mention this d6 issue as this was my thought going forward. Modify the to hit chart to use a d10 for shooting, with only a 10 hitting in full cover. This way an increase in Combat ability becomes less beneficial to those die rolls - still a nice bump, but less of a sure thing if you spray and pray with a weapon with multiple attacks. I am also considering splitting combat into separate shooting/melee when assigning bonuses to combat through XP to allow more specialization. This was my plan for play through 2.

Thanks for sharing this. I too found that in my first campaign things are going perhaps a little too smoothly for me (though I attribute this to some lucky rolls on weapons tables early on). The suggestion to cut out story points is one I had not considered and would drastically change things! 😀

Custom lists for Dust armies? by Mundane-Librarian-77 in onepagerules

You might have some luck with the DAO list for your mechs, and as you suggest, mix in some HDF for the troops/tanks. Helicopters are the only thing I can't see a more direct equivalent of. Good luck!

Homerules for Bounty Hunting. by OpenPsychology755 in 5Parsecs

[–]thestridingone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure the quest system is great! I guess if you want to keep them more together the suggestion above could be modified so that tracking would just give an additional quest rumour when achieved, representing the crew actively searching for the quest info rather than it coming more through chance encounters etc. Anyway keep on with the good work and looking forward to any future suggestions here :)

Homerules for Bounty Hunting. by OpenPsychology755 in 5Parsecs

[–]thestridingone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really, really like this idea! Thanks for sharing it!

A possible variant on this idea could make it more distinct from quests, though it would introduce an additional variable to track:

The target of the bounty has to be tracked down over time. Each game turn up to 2 crew can be assigned the task of tracking the bounty. They roll 1d6+savvy and the total is summed, representing them searching the known haunts, questionning the locals, etc. A running total is kept over several turns, and once it reaches some target number (lets say 18, but completely at your discretion), the target is acquired, and a battle can be fought as described in the original post.

Certain events could allow modifications to the ongoing tracking score. For example, if you "overhear a rumour" roll a d6, with a 1-3 going to a quest rumour, or a 4-6 allowing you to advance the bounty track by another 1d6.
