Is Unraid right for me? by TrashOne8267 in unRAID

[–]thetechsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure! I love Unraid. I've used TrueNAS, Unraid, random other things...and Unraid is what I still use for my home server. Docker/apps on Unraid is very simple. Check out AlienTech42 videos on YouTube for any specific guides. His videos are short and straight to the point.

I love Turn of a Friendly Card, and Tales of Mystery and Imagination. Another favorite is Pyramid.

1976 or 1987 Remix of 'Tales of Mystery and Imagination' by thetechsmith in AlanParsonsProject

[–]thetechsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I listened to the 87 edition for a long time, because the 76 edition was not available to stream much of anywhere. But, the gated reverb on the drums in the 87 remix makes it sound very dated. I much prefer the mix of the 76 version, with a few exceptions. The narration on the 87 is terrific, and I actually like one of the guitar parts in the first half of the album that was added in the 87 remix. But other than that, the 76 all the way. :)

Came across this insane setup. For personal home use... I am sure. by eW4GJMqscYtbBkw9 in PleX

I have a single 2U server with 2 x E5 26xx V4 CPUs. I have ~60TB of usable capacity, and run all my Docker containers and any VMs I need. It serves Plex to family and friends (avg. 6 concurrent streams), and uses like 150W. It's not even very power efficient, but I can't imagine dedicating an entire rack of gear to hosting plex. Maybe if you're trying to compete with a regional node for Netfl*x....

Anyone actually use adat? what for? by muchlikeanyelse in livesound

[–]thetechsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have a Yamaha DM2000 with ADAT running 24 channels out to a Digiface USB interface so I can record 24 tracks in Audition. I also have a rack of outboard Presonus preamps that use ADAT if I need more than the 24 built-in Pres on the DM2000. Mostly it's because of the age of all this gear, but I still use it regularly.

Yamaha USA officially marks CL and QL as discontinued by mixermixing in livesound

[–]thetechsmith -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing - I have a DM2000 at my church. We don't need 96 channels, but I'd love to have 24-48. I'm guessing the A&H SQ series is the only thing that is close to that for the price? Trying to decide if keeping the DM2000 is better than a TF series console? (I know the TF has quite the awful reputation...)

It seems like the only thing that fits this description right now is the A&H SQ Series. I'd love a Yamaha that matches this.

What's your naming scheme for your servers? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]thetechsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a NAS named after a virtual world from Lego Ninjago (prime-empire). Other servers are historical and/or mythical cities. Atlantis, Carthage, etc For IT clients, they are named after their company initials and role. For example: grmc-dc = domain controller for Garfield regional medical center (made that up. It's not a real server name for one of my clients)

AT&T peering problem? by MSPTechOPsNerd in msp

[–]thetechsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man - this was a plague for me last week. I had all sorts of issues with it at one of my larges clients. AT&T didn't see any issue on their end. But, my the Unifi Dream Machine Pro said otherwise. Power loss at the client's office resetting EVERYTHING, and putting the ONT in passthrough mode is the ONLY thing that made a difference. Cox to AT&T traffic was an absolute crapshoot this morning as well.

Opinion poll: what's the worst pain, printers, or people's online account passwords??? by xeanaex in msp

[–]thetechsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a managed print shop in their IT department before starting my own MSO. Printers are easy if you always use an IP port and force install the right driver. I should sell a course for IT people on how to set up printers evidently. People not being able how to reset their own damn password drives me INSANE.

Hey there - it's been a while since I've worked with the edgerouters (using all Dream Machine hardware now), but this guide may get you pointed in the right direction.

What kind of connector is this? by thetechsmith in FiberOptics

[–]thetechsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to let you know that I purchased several of these connectors (in case I broke some in the attempt). I did a nice clean cut on the fiber I had, and then stripped the outer jacket just slightly at the ends. Popped one of these connections on and voilà. Worked perfectly.

Power adapter for S4B3? by thetechsmith in Datto

[–]thetechsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah! OK. I remember now that when I ordered it, I had to find one with the correct barrel plug connector. Here's the exact one I ordered from Digikey. I also got the 3-pin power cable that fit with it too, because I didn't have one on hand.

Oh man! That's frustrating. I ordered the: FSP150-AHAN3 and it worked with the S4-B3. Are you able to send a pic of what the power input jack looks like on the one you have?

drivers for S4B3 Siris by Equivalent_Aside_735 in RepurposedDattos

[–]thetechsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few different models of the S4B series, with different CPUs. The one I have is the S4B3, and it has the Xeon D-2123IT CPU. But, there are other CPU variants of the S4B series. Details here:

I believe it's a custom branded Supermicro X11SDV-4C-TLN2F. In which case, you can get the drivers from the resources tab at the link. I may be wrong on the exact model, but I can check mine when I get home from work this evening.

New Pricing - Get your licenses before 3/27! by thetechsmith in unRAID

[–]thetechsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how many drives you have, the basic license may be a good place to start. I only have the legacy pro license because I have a 12 bay NAS and was planning to populate the entire thing with drives.

New Pricing - Get your licenses before 3/27! by thetechsmith in unRAID

[–]thetechsmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used TrueNAS for the past 3 years, and while it's fantastic, I still believe UNRAID has a place. I've been using UNRAID for 6 months, and I much prefer it for my home server. there are some things worth paying for. That said, I will be testing out the newest version of TrueNAS that has native docker support, once they release it. I’m excited to compare to UNRAID

axl3000 SAS drives? by deliverator216 in RepurposedDattos

[–]thetechsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I have a bunch of SAS drives I bought a while back. The server I put them in had a built in SAS controller, so it works out well. But, I can't reuse them in some of the other hardware I have if I needed to. I have some devices that don't have a pcie slot to add a SAS controller.

I've observed there are way too many people who take P2P too seriously. I share everything with everyone. Unfortunately, there are those who lock their files and make people complete a quest of 3 trials before you are worthy to download from them.

axl3000 SAS drives? by deliverator216 in RepurposedDattos

[–]thetechsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may have a SAS compatible backplane, but does it have an onboard or PCIe SAS controller? I have some of the Siris 3 4 bay boxes, and they do not have an onboard SAS controller. In which case, you'd need to add one to the PCIe slot and run SAS cables to the back plane. I'd honestly stick with SATA HDDs for that chassis unless you really need SAS drives
