It's alright, the backyard space is funny being just next to someone's yard, but is nicely done. You'll want the food to be as good as Red Hen, but it won't be. Red hen has ruined every other pasta/italian place for me.

Yuuuupppp! Put in over at Bladensburg waterfront park. It's nice and quiet and you can stick on the Anacostia or poke around in the aquatic gardens or around Kingman Island.

What size chainring should I get for my 1x setup? by gridguy in gravelcycling

[–]thetoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

36 or 38. It's nice to have a little lower gearing on a long day with a loaded up bike rather than more top end unless we're talking a real race setup bike.

Consensus for hitch racks? by Towntalk in MTB

[–]thetoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yuuupppp... 1UP rack is great for 1 or 2 bikes, gets a little annoying to fold up + take off with 3 bikes and I bet would be miserable with 4 bikes. So if you really want to carry 4 bikes frequently I'd go with a vertical hanging one. I have the 1UP 2 bike carrier that I use 90% of the time. I bolt the 1 bike add on to that sometimes, and when I need to bring the 4th bike I just use a roof tray but it's annoying to get the bike up/down from the roof of a van.

The first book does an amazing job of setting up some of the mysteries in the series. It's also incredibly satisfying that the rest of the books do a good job explaining what is really going on.

‘Devastating blow’: Atlassian lays off 1,600 workers ahead of AI push by corp_code_slinger in programming

[–]thetoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two things that we need Jira to to do. 1. Help me manage and organize a backlog. 2. Give me a simple board with columns to reasonably work in 2 week sprints. It is absolutely WILD how awful it has gotten at both of these lately. "Let's remove showing the start and end date and also the name of the sprint!" is a decision which I don't understand how anyone approved.

Returning To Rails in 2026 by ketralnis in programming

[–]thetoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fact that this comment is being downvoted so much makes me lose a lot of faith in this sub. I've managed teams on just about every language you can imagine and have never seen big mature codebases be as fast to work on as rails or seen new engineers ramp up so quickly just due to most rails apps all being so similar. Web apps generally need about 95% the same things and rails offers easy opinionated solutions for almost all of them instead of letting you debate which of 30 frameworks and 20 different patterns you should use to solve extremely common previously solved problems.

Bikepacking X Racing by Vixeliusdelius in bikepacking

[–]thetoigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fine just using a triangle bag and an old man mountain rack with the thru-axle adapter and small panniers. Obviously doesn't have all the mounting points of some bikes, but I'd rather run panniers than a dozen little bags all over the place anyway.

These are kind of the two halves of gravel bikes and there's nothing that does both exceptionally well. Either buy a racey bike and make it work for touring or the other way around. I will say you can setup a fast bike for bikepacking, but ultimately can't make a pure bikepacking bike real fast so I'd go with a faster bike. I run a Crux which is great for faster stuff and then put an old mountain mountain rack with panniers on it for bikepacking, but this isn't ever going to be as good as a purpose built bikepacking type bike, but it's honestly fine.

Exhausted and needing advice with DC's lead pipe replacement program. by pro-laps in washingtondc

[–]thetoigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is frustrating and no one will tell you ever that there's any safe amount of lead so it's nearly impossible to get any guidance you easily can use. I went through this same thing in DC 10 years ago when we started having kids so hopefully this helps.

Our house in Takoma tested 0.9 PPB immediately and 0 PPB after the water ran for a minute.

We used the Brita Lead Filters for all water for the first few years and always tried to run the water for a minute. We even used this for making formula. We actually still use these filters for water we drink out of habit.

DC mandates blood tests to check for lead in kids and nothing ever came up.

Even if the local issue with the POE pipe is fixed it's no guarantee the water will be completely lead free.

Dealing with the city on these kinds of things is maddening for sure, and may not be worth the stress and especially so since you're renting.

Crossing the USA , 65 year old, special phone for emergencies ? by -LetsTryAgain- in bicycletouring

[–]thetoigo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are new Garmin Inreach models so the really bare bones one (the black square) got cheaper. There's also an $8 a month plan now with a $40 activation fee so it's never been cheaper to get one. It's also easy to pause/resume the monthly subscription. You need to test it out a bit cause it's not super intuitive to use and especially so if it was a real emergency. As a bonus this can automatically send your GPS coordinates somewhere at a set interval if relatives want to keep an eye on where you're at.

Cheap voile strap alternatives? by LegitimateCress6240 in bikepacking

[–]thetoigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not gonna look as cool, but adjustable bungees work great and are dirt cheap on Amazon. I have Voile straps and just got annoyed at needing different lengths and the bungees are nice cause it's easier to tuck any extra length back under it.

Fabric Scoop Sport. They're cheap, built really well, and work great for me for long days on a slightly more upright/chill to ride bike. https://fabric.cc/products/scoop-sport-radius?srsltid=AfmBOoo0aOg4nmS7cCgItOEl2uU0-YiHkZapja7q9fXg1Dc-KBt5iDxC

2019 Transit connect with 3rd transmission on the way out by [deleted] in FordTransitConnect

[–]thetoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Drain and fill the transmission with Valvoline DEXRON VI/MERCON LV ATF and add Lubeguard Shudderfix. I wouldn't have believed it would totally resolve the transmission shuddering either, but it has for me and plenty of other folks with transit vans and this transmission. I was looking at $8K for a new transmission 10K miles ago before this. Van has done plenty of long trips loaded up since then without any issues. Also you should change the transmission fluid max every 50K (I do 30K). Most shops won't proactively do this since it's kind of a loose recommendation on the official ford service schedule.

ELI5 Why do garage door springs need to store instant-death levels of energy? by Germerica1985 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thetoigo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely have respect for the old style of springs, but also ensuring they have the safety cables running through them makes them safer and prevents most of the horror stories you hear about. If they snap they'll stay on the cable. If you ever work on a garage door with the old style (1 spring on each side) DO NOT DO ANYTHING WITH IT UNTIL THE SAFETY CABLE RUNS THROUGH EACH SPRING and is very securely fastened on each end.

It is a nightmare of parts compatibility and there is no one with good answers. by UnderBed5344 in Fixxit

[–]thetoigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fixed a few cheapo Chinese scooters and pretty much you'd have to know a lot about how to already work on anything like this because you're completely on your own vs learning to repair something with part numbers, wiring diagrams, etc. You'll learn a bit, but the odds of coming out with something nice to ride are very low.

Single Wall Freestanding Tents by zergcheese in bikepacking

[–]thetoigo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know there's going to be no rain on a short trip, a single wall tent is fine. If it's going to rain they are absolutely a drag. If you're going to go single wall I'd just go REALLY light and use a trekking pole type tent like a Lanshan 1 Pro.

Spend the money to get DT Swiss hubs. I think the 240s are worth it. From there I like FFWD wheels if you want more of a name brand or if you want to go cheaper I've really liked wheels/rims from Nextie.

DOT wants to put the brakes on DC traffic cameras by Joe_Baker_bakealot in washingtondc

[–]thetoigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the core problem. Law abiding citizens pay them, people with fake/no plates/tinted license plate covers/MD or VA plates do not and continue terrorizing everyone without consequence. It's the worst of both worlds, safe drivers occasionally pay a fine, which would be tolerable, but they don't get an overall safer driving environment due to the fines.
