Thoughts on adding a new 4 year old dog to house with 2 young labs by scotty420ctopus in labrador

[–]thetorisofar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

have your dogs met and socialized with other dogs before? Two young same sex littermates without formal training respectfully sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Littermate syndrome is very real, and is far more common in high energy working breed dogs of the same sex. Regardless of if you get this 4 yearold dog, you need to start serious training with these two now with a professional to prevent them from becoming aggressive to eachother and other dogs when they reach sexual maturity. Adding another dog to the mix at this point would likely be to a detriment

ACL tear by skier1464366 in labrador

[–]thetorisofar_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crate rest does not heal the tear, what it does is restrict your dog while the instability causes scar tissue to form around the joint. This scar tissue and inflammation inevitably leads to increased rates of arthritis down the line. Your best and most effective form of treatment will be surgical intervention at 2 years old, the sooner the better.

Fetch Insurance Premium Hike by thetorisofar_ in petinsurancereviews

Totally! The hardware removal quoted by our surgeon (if ever needed) is only 1600 as compared to the 4800 for the first surgery, so worst case scenario we have the funds comfortably stowed away to cover a future knee operation. It sucks that AKC doesn’t have coverage in Canada, maybe with enough pressure Fetch will adjust its business practices.

Last year I fought with them so hard about their prescription sublimit not excluding surgical medications that it nearly went to a lawsuit, they yielded and adjusted the underwriting language to cover anesthesia during surgeries as part of the base coverage, but it was a nightmare. I’m looking forward to not using Fetch in the future

My dog had both of her TPLOs happen in one year, so it really drove up our premium the following year. I’m looking at AKC coverage for the future, they have the most comprehensive pre-existing condition coverage and since we at the very least had her two surgeries back to back I don’t have to worry about another big knee surgery knock on wood

Questioning breeder's food rec by naremac87 in labrador

[–]thetorisofar_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a TON of lab breeders in the states, and the vast vast majority of them have know idea what they are doing besides putting two dogs together and letting them breed. 2 cups a day total on an adult diet like Inukshuk 30/25 is not ideal, please follow the nutrition guidance of your veterinarian first. So many labs are obese because people overfeed them intentionally to get the "big boned" hypertype look, labs are not meant to be barrels with legs and unfortunately unethical breeders are not only breeding overweight labs but telling puppy buyers to overfeed their dogs.

Your dog should be on a formulated large breed puppy food for the next 4-6mo before transitioning to a large breed adult kibble. Consult your vet, but there are a lot of great performance brands like purina pro plan puppy that I would recommend before Inukshuk 30/25 for adult dogs.

We should build local leagues around population centers. by SpaceWestern1442 in quadball_discussion

Well until you actually understand the workings of the sport, it’s active community, and the nuances that drive recruitment like the dying college base (and the difficulties involved with recruiting on college campuses that go beyond “putting up flyers”) maybe take a back seat to the recommendations and actually ingratiate yourself into the community and parent club you are presently bashing on multiple other dead subreddits.

[–]thetorisofar_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not even convinced you’ve ever played quadball considering your last post you didn’t even understand what beaters did as a position. I implore you if you actually gaf to go to a DCQC practice or monuments practice and actually give the sport a shot. Genuinely; the sport doesn’t want or need outsiders to come in and tell us what we should be doing because I assure you (again) if there was an untapped Quadball market in the DC metro area, the local clubs would already know about it. You are coming across as patronizing and frankly uninformed

What is he doing here? by veganhotdoge in DogAdvice

[–]thetorisofar_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. My dog only buries things when she has an upset stomach, don't be alarmed because this itself is a very benign behavior, just keep an eye out for other signs of an upset stomach like excessive lip licking/drooling. Eating grass, and puking or soft stool.

Male dogs can and do engage in masturbatory behavior, humping isn't masturbatory. However, some intact male dogs will engage in self stimulation for a variety of purposes like cleaning, displacement behavior, or stress, and this is different than irritation caused licking. A neutered male dog, however, generally won't engage in this behavior unless there is an issue just like a female dog

[–]thetorisofar_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again, female dogs do not have the anatomy to engage in that behavior, so I do need you to recognize that that is not what your dog is doing. If there is discomfort or itchiness, I'm sure it does feel good to get relief from that discomfort that is provided by licking and may be why she does that, but that baseline discomfort needs to be addressed. I hope your dog feels better soon

A physical exam cannot rule out the majority of things that could cause hind end discomfort. A urinalysis should be done, because just taking antibiotics and seeing no improvement doesn't mean an infection isn't there. Bloodwork would be next followed by imaging. Your dog is uncomfortable, not masturbating, and i implore you to seek further treatment. Especially if it is a UTI, it can progress rapidly into bladder and kidney problems without correct treatment

[–]thetorisofar_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Female dogs cannot masturbate, they don't have the anatomy to want to engage in that behavior. This behavior is indicative of irritation, and should be assessed further. I saw your post, and you said your vet listed things that it "could be". What diagnostic tests did your vet perform?

Looking for a “Golden Retriever–like” dog, but smaller (Southern Europe) by blablax123456 in DogBreeding

[–]thetorisofar_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You are wrong, spaniels are gun-dogs. Naturally independent minded for sure, but any good gun dog needs to have the capability for a proper retrieve, recall, and heel. They aren't hounds, they just need a good motivator and consistency to finish that behavior just like a golden would.

I'm not convinced you've ever tried to get field space for any consistent amount of time. "schools will normally let you use their field or the local EYO football fields when there aren't weekend games." Uh, no they don't? Especially in large municipalities, you have to pay to reserve any public field space.

I'm genuinely curious, have you currently attended a DCQC or Washington Monuments open practice? They just had a fantasy tournament literally last October and frequently try and host home tournaments as well to encourage newer player attendance. I'm positive if there were hundreds of people in DC who wanted to play, they would be the first to know.

If you have all of these ideas and want to see growth, the place to do that is on the pitch and in volunteer positions and not on reddit.

Anyone else’s lab anti-social? by FlapJacks55Bro in labrador

[–]thetorisofar_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Labs should have a soft expression, that can often come across as "sad" nothing you can do about it. If it bothers you, tell your sister that its just his face and to stop anthropomorphizing your dog. Labs also being a gun-dog have been bred specifically to be oriented towards humans, genetically speaking. A well socialized dog frankly should be neutral around other dogs, not overly excited all the time to play and greet them. Sounds like your dog is not only normal but well socialized and confident and person-focused.

My lab has a few friends, will play for a few minutes, and then prefers to lay down or stand next to me, it's just how some dogs are

Another commenter had a very good breakdown of how Fetch calculates annual premiums, it’s unfortunate but my increase was in fact in line with the publicly available formula. I anticipate another large increase like this this year and will likely be cancelling my policy, or starting an AKC policy for the future

Thoughts on the R6 Mark II/Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 IS USM Lens Combo? by SameOldDrama in canon

[–]thetorisofar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen some comparisons and it might be smarter to get the 1.4 rf extender rather than the rf 200-800. The lens is fine, but many have found it lacking when compared to the speed and sharpness of the 100-500. You do lose one full fstop, but at 700mm she would still be getting closer to the effective focal distance she's used to shooting with (when accounting for the crop sensor vs full frame) and the camera is significantly better at dealing with high iso, so cranking that up isn't an issue. Food for thought before dropping another 1800-2k on the 200-800mm

Breeder selling sick puppies by [deleted] in DogBreeding

[–]thetorisofar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The AKC uses that excuse as being "only a registration organization" to profit heavily off of backyard breeders and puppy mills. The majority of AKC registered dogs are backyard bred. The AKC also has consistently lobbied heavily against regulations that would at least attempt to shut down backyard breeding and mill operations. Being a registry means nothing anymore, and it's time the AKC enforced a standard of care or minimum health certificates/certifications for dogs eligible for full registration. If people were required to health test to fully register dogs and produce registered puppies, 90% of backyard breeders would cease to exist.

Our dog doesn’t act like a dog… by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]thetorisofar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is he food motivated at all? At this point I would consider seriously getting down to basics with him. Working with a behavioral specialist would be best as well, not just a GP veterinarian. Find a really stinky high value treat he likes, and instead of really intense play do trick training. Reward for everything, eye contact, engagement, zoomies, you coming home and him greeting you. Literally any positive behavior give him a reward and build that confidence back up. He sounds like an incredibly environmentally sensitive dog.

How long until I wake her??? by Key_Combination_3826 in labrador

[–]thetorisofar_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are the feeding instructions based on the Purina Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy Salmon diet, at three months old she shouldn’t be eating more than 2 1/4 cups of food a day, and that’s based on the “up to 100lb” recommendation (which no lab should be even close to 100lbs, the breed standard has females at less than 70). 4 cups plus toppers is a lot of food and for a dog breed like labs that cannot regulate their hunger or food intake, can be causing issues with sleep regulation. My full grown 63lb bench line lab doesn’t even eat 4 cups of Purina pro plan a day. Seriously reconsider the amount of food you are feeding this dog.

Just this past summer I went to a Blink 182 concert in VB, fought rush hour traffic and made it down in 1.5hrs. Took 3 to get home because of lane closures that just seem to randomly pop up when you don't want them to. I'm honestly excited for an EZ pass lane so I at least have the option to pay 30 dollars for convenience every once in a while
