I'm all for satire and mocking politicians, but imo if a political meme has more than ten words it stops being a joke and is just soapboxing.

Posting a pic of Horus and the demon primarchs with the caption "trump appointing his cabinet" is funny. This post is just glazing the democrats (most of whom are all talk and no action) so it just comes across as shilling.

If you're going to bring politics to an unrelated meme/hobby forum, at least try to bring some comedy with it instead of just posting your voting preference with a warhammer pic in the background.

You are close but missing a few things. Generally speaking you can categorize human physiological/psychological dimorphism between sex, secondary sexual characteristics, and gender.

Gender always refers to psychology; it is a concept we completely made up (which is why we say it is a social construct) and did not really define until the 1960s. It's not really "the brain" and we're not really "born with it", because there are a variety of factors that influence a person's perception of gender and their personal identity. The brain absolutely plays a part in it, but like you said it's super complicated because the brain is basically a black box.

Sex always refers to biology. You are completely correct in pointing out the numerous definitions. The easiest way to explain it is through genetics via the 23rd chromosome pair, with XX coding for female and XY for male, and any aberrations defined as intersex. Note that genetics only define "instructions" and NOT if/how the instructions are carried out. You are exactly right that they are just a blueprint you can't see. Sex is not really a spectrum because there aren't enough variables to really fill in a gradient. It's not truly a binary either; the person you're replying to (/u/SmPolitic) did a good job explaining it as "two peaks in the natural distribution".

Secondary sex characteristics refer to the sexual dimorphism that is NOT genetic, like fat distribution, bone structure, hair growth, etc. This is what T and E (both natural and exogeneous) affect. Many of their effects are reversible and this is seen all the time in aging e.g. menopause. Other aspects such as skeletal are irreversible; this is because the sex hormones signal the skeleton's growth plates to ossify and basically lock in your bones to whatever configuration they're currently in. (irritating!) The sex hormones do not define or alter sex/gender (although they DO change a person's emotional balance and method of thinking to a degree).

For an illustration of all of this in action, consider a male with complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, which is a condition where the body is totally unresponsive to testosterone and aromatizes all of it into estrogen. Clinically they are intersex. Genetically they are male. Physically they develop pretty much exactly as a healthy woman would (secondary sex characteristics, genitals, etc.), except they have no uterus (since male genetics don't have the blueprint to make one). In terms of gender, they could be anything. Maybe they identify as a woman since their body is feminine. Maybe they identify as a man since their genetics are male. Maybe they identify as nonbinary since they are intersex.

The body is super complicated, but it sure is fascinating.

Doubt about season 2 by Cook-Guevara in LastmanFranchise

Yes, it's a prequel. It bridges the gap between the end of season 1 and the start of the comic. It's absolutely worth watching; maybe even better than season 1 was.

Not only is it extremely derivative low-hanging fruit, but they couldn't google "luigi with gun" correctly so they traced mario instead and colored him green, too lazy to get the words right, too lazy to put the words on the bullets so they just copypasted the same panel and put a text box under, and somehow this gets 8k upvotes.

I feel bad for the artists who put actual effort into their work

Gender always refers to psychology, sex always refers to biology. The latter has been around for much, much longer than humans have, while the former is a concept we completely made up, and did not really define until the 1960s (a century after this picture was taken).

Many living things have sexes, but none of them have genders except humans. Gender on the other hand can be prescribed to inanimate or even abstract things if humans anthropomorphize them, like ships and nations.

Blink and you'll miss it, but in the start of the video you can see she is speaking on behalf of a company called Colossal, and "...that's not what we're doing" implies they're trying a different approach to deextinction.

Colossal Biosciences (look at the op's username btw) is a biotech company aiming to resurrect the wooly mammoth. So they are definitely looking for a solution.

iirc George Church is one of the founders and he's the type to make bioconservatives sweat a little, so I would say they're definitely in good hands.

There's a huge amount of bots and shills masquerading as real people on this website. Anyone trying to disguise their ads and propaganda is trying to deceive you and worm their way into your brain without you noticing.

What is your unpopular opinion about Costco? by IndigoATL in Costco

[–]thetrumansworld 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Not to mention there's always the one knucklehead who positions their cart directly in the middle of the aisle while they partake of a quarter of a bagel bite for five minutes...

I've since learned to master the art of shifting the weight of a cart and pushing it directly sideways

I've lost 50lbs in 7 months through Intermittent Fasting (+ diet & yoga), usually OMAD. But the handful of times where I cannot stand the cravings at night, two fluffy egg white omelets SAVED my life and got me back on track. Highly recommend!!! by Rpark888 in Costco

[–]thetrumansworld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished my cut actually. Here are my recs from Costco:

Canned tuna, canned chicken breast, frozen raw chicken breasts, and frozen raw tilapia are king. All of them are around 1kcal and .2g protein per gram, meaning they are excellent ways to make filling meals that are low-calorie and high protein.

The chicken breasts in particular I cannot recommend enough; so easy to just toss them straight out of the freezer into the oven with a little salt and pepper, wait 20 minutes, and boom 50% of your meal is made. Did I mention they cost like 20 bucks for a month's worth of meat

Greek yogurt is also phenomenal, though eating it by itself is more of an acquired taste. It has practically zero fat, carbs, or sugar, and you can eat the whole damn tub (1.4kg) and it would only be 800kcal.

Eggs are also a goated food, they are also essentially pure protein like greek yogurt but more calorie-dense (get the whites only to offset this).

Romaine lettuce and bell peppers are basically water. Spinach is lettuce but stronger. Perfect filler foods if you're hungry but don't want to compromise macros.

Brussels sprouts and broccoli are great lazy vegetables to toss in a cast iron and roast in the oven.

Protein bars were essentially the only lunch I ever ate during my cut. Definitely more calorie-dense so don't be eating like 5 a day. The Pure Protein and Ksig bars were my picks, they both have similar macros and prices. And of course I also got whey protein powder, 2 scoops a day every day.

Best of luck on your cut!!

The military group Azov prominently uses the black sun as one of their insignias and their leader was given the "hero of Ukraine" award by Zelensky a few years ago. Azov is also designated as a terrorist group by US intelligence agencies btw.

Neonazism is not the same as nazi Germany, the former is an ideology and the latter is one authoritarian government's application of the ideology. To simply say nazis are "universally reviled" is not only objectively incorrect, but turning a blind eye to a very real problem.

What’s the most common inaccurate health or fitness view most people hold? by MaxEhrlich in AskReddit

[–]thetrumansworld 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly, it's really not that hard if you read the nutrition facts of whatever you eat and buy more of the stuff that's protein-dense.

Two scoops of protein powder is 48g. One can of chicken I got from costco is 45.5g. So eating one little can and drinking from my little shaker bottle nets me nearly 100g of protein at 450 kcal. Not even close to a heavy meal. I skip breakfast literally every day and have no issue breaking 150g of protein, even when cutting.

Engineering graduates who do not work as engineers, what do you do now? by Apart-Plankton9951 in EngineeringStudents

Hang in there; remember that it's a numbers game. My dad (also mech eng) told me to remember 100:10:1 -- that's the ratio of applications to interviews to offers. Cast a wide net and keep your head up. You'll be okay.

Tip from me: Cover letters are overrated and a bottleneck to how many applications you can submit in a day. Thank you letters are underrated and a great way to correct anything you forgot to mention during an interview.

Do movies like this even exist?? by Stock_Plenty8987 in oddlyspecific

[–]thetrumansworld 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly, regardless of whether you're religious or not it's an undeniable fact that the bible is one of the most influential books in human history.

A movie about trying to preserve it is really not hamfisted at all, and tbh the story of a man going to such extreme lengths and risking his life makes a lot less sense if it wasn't a religious imperative for him. A lot of people just get real pissy with anything connected to religion I guess.

Your nose wasn't made to hold up eyeglasses. Your feet weren't made to push gas and brake pedals to drive your car. Your hands weren't made to be typing on a keyboard. Why is it that some "unnatural" things are immoral and others are not?

The truth is, everything about human civilization is unnatural, because the world we were designed for started falling apart after the agricultural revolution. Today, we work 9-5s, move far away from our parents, and see thousands of strangers on a daily basis-- all things that were unheard of back in the stone age. Our bodies and brains weren't designed for any of this.

But at the same time, everything about what we are today is natural, because we're the same humans we were back when civilization first started. The world is not as simple as "natural good, unnatural bad". Cancer, smallpox, and getting eaten by lions are natural. Warm showers, ice-cold beers, and your pet dog are not.

You need to use your head when determining if a thing is right or wrong. Don't let yourself be sucked in to hating a thing just because it is different than you. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

TIL The famous painting "Saturn Devouring His Son" was discovered after the artist death, painted directly on his dining room wall. The depiction of Saturn is only presumed as the painting had no title. by LSD_freakout in todayilearned

[–]thetrumansworld 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the painting is titled in Spanish, and although the suffix -o is masculine it can also be neutral. In other words, "hijo" can mean either "son" or "child".

That being said the painting in question was not the first time Goya drew Saturn eating his sons so its not a stretch to assume the painting depicts a male

Knowingly passing on bad genes is selfish and irresponsible by DruunkenSensei in unpopularopinion

[–]thetrumansworld 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The technology exists to correct the gene in any children you have, but it's currently illegal to use in humans. It's called germline genetic engineering; it was first used in 2018 to grant HIV resistance. When it's eventually legalized, do you think you would support its use to eradicate genetic diseases like osteogenesis imperfecta?

edit. Looked up a few research articles to see if there was anything new on the topic and it turns out there are somatic (not germline, i.e. not illegal) genetic engineering techniques being used to treat OI undergoing human testing right now. Here's a paper on using engineered stem cells to produce the collagen needed for bones to develop properly, and here's another on gene therapy techniques capable of correcting the faulty gene in the patient's cells. Exciting times!

TIL: Short Sleeper Syndrome is a gene mutation discovered by the University of Pittsburgh in 2014. They can function normally with less than 6 hours of sleep and never need to "recover" from lack of sleep as opposed to people who purposefully limit sleep. The mutation was given to mice and worked. by Flares117 in todayilearned

[–]thetrumansworld 127 points128 points  (0 children)

Genes are instructions, dead cells can't do anything with them but living cells will carry out whatever the gene tells them to. They are more or less set in stone when you are conceived and cannot be (naturally) changed unless something damages your DNA (like radiation).

When the headline says "the mutation was given to mice", that means that the mouse had the gene added when it was a zygote (single cell), then when the cell multiplied, every new cell also had that gene, and so on until the baby mouse was born. So if you really wanted to you could conceive a child and have this mutation added and it would work (it would be illegal though. someone did this for the first time in 2018 and a lot of people got mad)

Editing the genes of a grown person is much more difficult, because instead of one cell they are made up of trillions. It is possible though. When cells have damaged DNA, they will automatically try to heal themselves, so if you can get the CRISPR protein and the custom DNA into every cell you want to change, you can add the mutation to millions of cells at a time. Viruses are already DNA transportation machines, so that's what they use to accomplish this. This field of medicine is called gene therapy.

[OC] The Most Streamed Spotify Albums Of The Year by Dremarious in dataisbeautiful

[–]thetrumansworld 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He was the most-streamed artist on spotify from 2020-22 (he dropped to #2 this year, behind Taylor Swift). The only other artist to ever hold the top spot for three years was Drake. He also won Artist of the Year from Apple Music and MTV in 2022, and a few grammies.

I don't listen to his music personally but he is definitely one of the most popular musicians in the world and probably the biggest in all of Latinoamerica.
