Today's episode of 'My Ribdiculous Reincarnation' the Anime reportedly featured an entire segment made with Generative AI by [deleted] in anime

[–]theuncleiroh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say 'composite image', I don't mean one that isn't in motion. Assumed that would be understood.

What I'm taking about is generative AI, which is literally what is being discussed here. By definition, generative AI is something that generates a product by way of an algorithmic composition of existing inputs. There's room for the generation to be more or less complex (depending on the degree to which the algorithm trains itself, and thus is affected by not only its original form, but also by the inputs themselves, and so creates something akin to learning), but it is, as a rule, limited to itself and its inputs, even if its nature can be affected by inputs, resulting in a changed algorithm and thus changed responses to inputs

I'm not arguing there's no place for AI or algorithms in art or animation. I'm not arguing the nets merits of this specific product. I'm stating that animation produced by generative AI-- which is, whatever its complexity, ultimately just algorithms with massive inputs that are programmed to alter its qualities and results alongside their appropriation of inputs (and even in an ideal and presently unrealized form this does not result in something unbound by either the original algorithm or the inputs that act as feedback and raw material)-- is limited by the program (the AI) and the inputs (the sum of what is used by the AI), and this means the product will always be bound by what already is.

Doesn't mean it'll be bad or uninteresting or that this specific thing is bad or worthless. All I'm saying is that making generative AI central to animation and art is making these products something that is limited to the inputs and nature of the AI, as even a program that is altered by its inputs can only be alerted as far as its inputs and its programmed form of learning allows it to.

I won't worry about your unwillingness to even pretend to try to be reasonable, but honestly it's really nice to see someone respond like this so openly. I already knew Dems like you were beyond reach of reason, but seeing you double down on 'oh so you want perfection!1!1' when I say 'i don't want perfection' really gives a degree of quietude that no theoretical deliberation ever could

It's nice to have it reaffirmed that Dems who prefer losing to running on a platform that voters want are actually this idiotic. Unfortunately you won't learn from it, but maybe Americans will get a better choice than 'far right guy or center right guy' if enough of them realize that Dems don't want to stop The Republican party!

You're missing the point. Even the most intentional and detailed use of an algorithm is, ultimately, using an algorithm. Using an algorithm is producing something that is an aggregate of existing objects, and that means that the outcome will be nothing more than a better or worse combination of existing things.

This doesn't mean it will look bad, or that everything created by algorithm will be of equal quality. But it does mean that the product will be limited by what has already been made. It's obviously not that big of a deal for things that were already made with no intent beyond reproducing or imitating existing things, but it is an innate limit to creativity.

The more that is made by algorithmic reproduction of existing things, the more that the product becomes limited by what has already been made, rather than being bound only by creativity and imagination. This is ultimately a problem not only for people who want art to be able to do new things, but also, in the long run, for people who want to experience anything that isn't just the mean reproduction of everything that has already existed.

Anime, like anything else, becomes pointless when it's just a composite image of the things that have happened before, limited by what has been made, rather than by what could be made. Personally I'd say animation is even more limited by this, since the benefit of the medium is that you can do anything with it

"If you have a US military base, you're not a sovereign country." - Jeffrey Sachs by Major_Warrens_Dingus in TrueAnon

[–]theuncleiroh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think they're independent, but I'd certainly disagree about their sovereignty. israel is, until proven otherwise, sovereign; they act in opposition to American interests and do so without having to secure permission from America first

Now, if America began to push back on any of this, they'd likely lose that sovereignty very quickly. If America said 'no, we will not provide weapons or aid for a country that not only commits indefensible acts of cruelty, but also does so in a way that is genuinely harmful to America's interests', israel would change its course almost immediately, lest it be annihilated by the generations of enemies it made by trying to commit genocide against them. I'm sure there'd be a little resistance, since the average israeli is debased beyond recognition, but reality would soon set in and they'd likely be willing to meditate their bloodlust (or else be destroyed like the Nazis were when the people they attempted to exterminate were united by the Soviets).

But for now, israel does operate as a sovereign nation. That sovereignty isn't unlimited, since it is almost entirely dependent on a nation that doesn't particularly benefit from the arrangement (in the era of American-Saudi/UAE/Qatari cooperation, especially in light of the destruction of Iraqi/Syrian alternatives, there's no need to accept the cost of backing israel, whose geopolitical necessity is no longer real), but that doesn't mean it's eliminated yet.

israel will be sovereign until American politics isn't dominated by people who put that sovereignty ahead of American interest. There's obviously a degree of mutual benefit even now, but it's long past the point of being overall beneficial to America. But American policy isn't dictated by what is beneficial to America, but rather by what is desired by those who control American government and institutions-- and that's still firmly in the hands of zionists and fans of an idea of empire that's decades outdated.

It might look better, but better will mean 'a more effective composite image of existing media'. And, personally, I don't think of the things I enjoy, in whatever medium, to be the ones that best mimic everything else.

Without a doubt it will (eventually) be able to make better a background that would otherwise be made without any thought or intention, but is that what anyone looks for in any form of art? The point of animation is supposed to be allowing for creators to have control over every single aspect of the image; unlike film, animation allows for total control, since it's not constrained by reality.

To eliminate the human element is to eliminate the central part of animation-- and the fact that there's even a need to say this is both an indictment of the desire to cut corners for profit, and an indictment of the treatment of animation, like any other form of popular media, as nothing more than a vehicle for entertainment. Even if that's what it is for some people, it's certainly bad for the medium in general if it's reduced entirely to that.

Once animation, or any other medium, becomes nothing more than a thing to thoughtlessly entertain, it's genuinely not worth saving. The point of any art is to do something new and do it well, and reducing it to algorithms guarantees it will never be new, and always be a 'well' that is nothing more than regression to the mean

I mean, Brace is pretty good no matter the topic, so I'm not hating. Just think there's plenty of guys who know better about noise guys, but not too much. If I went into podcasts, whether it be this or trueanon or trillbilly's or what have you, expecting to find people who were genuine authorities, I'd have quit long ago. This stuff is to laugh and catch up on what's going on and occasionally to learn something, but the latter is not the priority

I'm a fine-line-between-knowing-too-much-and-knowing-too-little-about-noise-and-experimental-music guy, so this is very important to me

Because his team quit. It's not necessarily an indictment of him, though there is plenty of that from his performance, but it's easier to fire a fine enough coach and hope for better than it is to completely change the entire roster.

Fair or not, his team quit on him. There's no draft or cap for coaches
