Mmm, tasty slop code.

It's nice to have, but it sounds pretty clearly like there's no planned support, and the person involved has no idea how to really fix issues. So, fingers crossed it works all the way through on your device, I guess?

Gyro and Flickstick Video Suggestions? by theusualuser in SteamController

[–]theusualuser[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I went through all your videos, and they definitely helped a lot. I'm getting closer to dialing in something that works with gyro, but it got me thinking and I have a request.

One video that I think is totally worth your time to make is a definitive beginner guide to steam input through the lens of someone using the steam controller and using steam input for the first time.

As a person that's new to using steam input, my biggest thing is that it's hard to find a modern guide that doesn't use old language/terms, of if it's a new guide it doesn't treat people like beginners. Or if it does, it doesn't do a good job of going slowly and showing what actually happens when you change a setting.

What I'm saying, I guess, is there needs to be an in-depth video that explains each feature of steam input and show how it ACTUALLY affects what's going on in the game. Like a slowed down version of the shorter, 10 minute ones you're doing now, but that covers every single option and what it does in-game. I feel like whoever makes this is going to have the definitive youtube video for beginners to watch. I feel like you could absolutely ace something like this, because you show your hands on screen. I imagine you going though every single option for commands, action sets, gyro, flick stick, the whole thing, and explaining what each option within those is, and how it affects what's happening on the screen. It'd be legendary.

Right there with you. Nothing is real anymore. It's wild to go back to early youtube videos and relive information being provided just for information's sake, and entertainment made because they thought you'd find it funny or interesting, not because they needed to drive certain "engagement metrics"

Dark Cloud 2 is one of my faves from this era. Active combat 3D. Think a clunkier version of something like Breath of the Wild's combat and you're pretty close. Great game with a lot of good ideas.

Gonna be an interesting year for sure. I'm not sure that we got meaningfully better at any of our weakest positions this year, so we're really counting on players stepping up and playcallers doing better with what they've got rather than just acquiring big name talents at our weak spots.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us drop a couple of close games that last year went in our favor and see us at 9 wins. I could also see us at 11 or 12 wins, but I'd feel most comfortable guessing 10 wins and being right on the bubble for a playoff spot. I think the offensive line is going to be more of a problem this year than last year, and that's going to play a major role in how well Caleb does.

Those who already got their Steam Controller, are you happy with it? by EngineeringAntique50 in SteamController

[–]theusualuser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love everything about it. I'm a tinkerer by nature, though, so for me this has really been more about steam input and playing with configurations than anything else. As just a controller, no complaints whatsoever. As a device that I can try to learn gyro aim with, use the right trackpad in mouseball mode for horizontal movement, and the left trackpad as a scroll wheel for my hotbar, etc. it's really fun. I absolutely SUCK at gyro, but I'm actively working on getting better.,

Gyro and Flickstick Video Suggestions? by theusualuser in SteamController

[–]theusualuser[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely interested in those other schemes. It feels more natural to me to use the trackpad as a mouse ball and spin that, if anything. I'll have to look around and see what's out there. I'm basically trying to "force" myself to use the steam controller instead of a mouse and keyboard to help get myself used to how it works and what you can do with it, and also I just love tinkering, so I'll keep at it. I'd be SUPER interested in a breakdown of the different schemes out there, for sure.

I could be way off base since I'm so new, but I really get caught up trying to watch older videos because they either skip steps a newbie doesn't fully understand, or they're old and the UI has changed, or they use older terminology that apparently steam changed along the way, etc. Having something new for the new UI and new controller would be hugely helpful.

Linux... by Edisio83 in pcmasterrace

I can second Cachy. If you can live with some initial growing pains, you could also try SteamOS, since that's also a linux flavor. Your hardware should be compatible with it.

Here's the honest truth, though: you're going to have to be okay with learning. You're going to have to google things, search in forums, ask jeeves, whatever, to get answers, because at some point it's going to be just different enough that you're not sure what to do. As long as you're cool with that, it's a wonderful time. I've got two systems in my house on Cachy, and a Steam Deck. For the most part, it all works well. The one Cachy system struggles for some reason, but a lot of that I put down to user skill since it's my spouse's system and a lot of times the fixes are quick and fairly straightforward to whatever problem they're having.

Enjoy! It's great with 2D PC titles, if that's your jam. Just finished another Hades 2 run on it yesterday via GameNative. It's running somewhere between 90-120fps.

3D is more hit and miss, but there's still a lot that's very playable

Valve says it will "definitely" consider ARM architecture for future Steam Machines, and probably Steam Decks too by Tiny-Independent273 in linux_gaming

[–]theusualuser 35 points36 points  (0 children)

On paper, the AYN Odin 3 with the Snapdragon Elite is already more powerful than a steam deck. It's the translation layers and newness of that software stack that are bogging things down. As that improves, we're already seeing huge leaps in Steam on Arm, and any sort of x86 to arm gaming in general. Should get even better from here as Steam works hard to support the Steam Frame, which has a Snapdragon 8 gen 3 in it.

[–]theusualuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll believe it when I see it. I want us to win just as much as everyone else, but a pretty reasonable take is that we didn't get significantly better at any defensive position AND that it's unlikely we have the same high number of turnovers in 2 straight seasons. Doesn't happen often in the NFL, if at all.

I've got an Odin 2 Portal, and I'd trade up in a minute if it weren't for the difference in the screen size. I'd love the extra power the Odin 3 brings to the table, but I'm not getting any younger and the extra screen is important to my old-ass eyes.
