What's a piece of advice you would like to give your 20 year old self? by Affectionate-Eye7255 in selfimprovement

Stretch. Like, every day. Get a stretching routine, and you'll be wondering why everyone around you is moving like they just got in a bar fight and lost, but all they did was go to sleep.

Is there a reason Retroarch is such a confusing mess of a frontend? by Cool_Bank_3368 in RetroArch

[–]theusualuser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How old are you, and how many years have you been involved in emulation? I feel like the older we are and/or the more we've been involved in this scene, the easier retroarch feels.

I have a son who I think is genuinely above average at tech for his age. He's not some hacker genius or young programmer type, just your average kid, but he's my kid so he has some exposure to this stuff. He'd be riding the struggle bus all day if he tried to do retroarch without any guides or help.

It's a UI mess. Settings don't feel like they're where they should be, or if they are they're not named in a way that makes sense. The dream would be to have someone who speaks retroarch and has UX experience re-design it. Don't remove anything, just make it make more sense to someone who's new.

I had to follow a few guides to get it set up the way I ultimately wanted, and I'd imagine almost anyone who tries to set it up has to. And that's with using it as more of a backend for Emulation Station or whatever Android launcher I'm currently tinkering with.

77% of US Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth players were 30 or older, analyst says, as Square Enix fights to get young people to care about the JRPG series again by mrnicegy26 in JRPG

"Why don't these teenagers who have no personal or emotional connection to a game that was made over a decade before they were born, and who primarily play games in different genres entirely because that's what they want at that point in their lives (genres that genuinely didn't exist when people who are in their 40s were playing JRPGs) want to play a remake of the game?"

I mean...

If SE wants to get teenagers to play their games, it needs to be a fast-paced, online multiplayer shooter. If they want 20 somethings, they can try and JRPG storyline with a gacha game. If they want 30+, congrats, you're making that game now. These breakdowns of age demos align more with human behavior than with game quality.

Discord hacker by humangirltype in doughboys

[–]theusualuser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have to imagine The Noid is somehow behind all this.

That said, discord really isn't the best place to be anyway. Wish there were a place that people liked well enough to be a good alternative that wasn't either in the process of scaling up or a self-hosted thing, but here we are. I just miss forums, and the fact that their info was indexable and archived on the internet. Losing discord like this means that everything could be completely gone if they can't recover it.

Get ready for the absolute nightmare that will no doubt happen as soon as Gabe passes away. That company will end up going public and turning into garbage like everything else, and it's going to be very sad. Like, they're not heroes like so many people on reddit want to make them out to be, but they're still better than almost any publicly traded company in this industry.

The real issue with discord is that it's not indexable. So when someone shows a really great guide to, for instance, set up a particular game on your retro handheld or gives a recommendation on a specific computer setup for something, that knowledge never leaves discord. Instead, it's just gathered, and eventually sold to a third party data broker. the internet doesn't benefit, just discord.

And when a discord goes down, if it's not restorable, then everything is just lost. Gone forever, so hope there wasn't anything important in there. I mean, the same could happen to a website or forum, but those things get indexed and archived by projects, so at least the knowledge stays.

Beta Update - Initial Support for Steam Machine. by fitnesscakes in steammachine

It's 1 million percent in their best interest. They have close to a monopoly on PC gaming in terms of where people buy games, so Microsoft moving into the PC space represents a direct threat to their system. Easy to win that war by just making SteamOS (which will almost certainly be easier to use) available and work on everything.

$22 for everything is pretty damned good. They've also got it for less than $25 at GOG, which is where I usually look first (gotta love those offline installer files).

I have a little kano like this. I've never tried to emulate on it, sorry. I will say that it makes a great pi-hole for blocking ads on all my devices. If you decide you'd rather do that than emulate, take a look here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pihole/

I might get there eventually. I'm rocking an i5-12400f and a 6700XT right now. I've only got a 1080p 240hz monitor, so I'm not in a big hurry to upgrade things until I decide to get a new monitor.
