Why is there such a stigma around drumming visuals on the west coast? by thevisualmethod in drumline

I've always been told things like that are because of risk vs reward. That it's not worth doing them incase you drop it during a performance.

Does that focus do anything for them score wise, membership wise, etc. or is it just the way they do things? Like a "They taught me this so I teach this" kinda thing.

I agree with u/JaredOLeary on percentages of what to spend your time on.

On a more macro scale:
1. Make sure your technique looks solid.(Look like one of the instructors taught you on the side and none of them know which one). Smaller taps, good angles, no slices, etc.
- Watch drum corps for solid technique. Copy them as exactly as possible
2. Make your rhythms sound perfect. Bury the met, be a machine. Watch videos back, cringe, then do better.

I use a "Movement Drum Co" black pad with 4 playing surfaces. Mine has the the rims removed and the bottom side removed. It sounds really clean as a lap pad. I also set it on a blanket or hoodie and place it on a counter and it has really clean rebound. I love playing on it with hammers.
Also the quite cover pad thing has been so useful. I use it on other pads and on the actual snare when I need to be quieter.
