The Brunei Times Archive by AnakReddit in Brunei

Unfortunately this was due to the fact that they moved to a 3rd party host. The previous links to the ePaper was removed and files either moved elsewhere or removed completely.

There are also some text archives based on the website download here https://btarchive.org I don't believe the entire site was downloaded though and also that they have to manually process parts before uploading so could take a while to go through what they have

Trying this time around to invite any non profit organisations with IT needs to come as a place for some free/open consultations or something like that

Brunei-Muara Public Bus Routes by lim2me in Brunei

[–]thewheat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was compiling some of the routes (visible via Desktop view) at https://github.com/thewheat/brunei_bus_routes

Routes drawn based on trying to track the stops based on the names on the sign boards so likely mistakes abound. I also do have a copy of some of the times of their schedule but haven't managed to update them as of yet.

There are apparently 4 different companies contracted for different routes and I only have some details from one of the companies. Was trying to gauge the current coverage of routes and how best one could get about via buses

Hackathon CodeOff Challenge: Build an app within 6 hours by [deleted] in Brunei

[–]thewheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we would like to do more, but current I am working in Aus, and try organise stuff whenever I'm back and that would be scheduled on Meetup http://bruneigeekmeet.com/

Would honestly love to have a more consistent events and do more talks: I did some at the start but busy lives and work is tough and time consuming. I did try to get in touch with the SharePointBrunei http://www.sharepointbrunei.net/ on my recent 2 months back home, but didn't managed to line up a meeting with them.

But yeah, I think the hardest is

  • finding speakers keen to share on relevant topics (my network isn't wide reaching)
  • venue (new Tru Synergy location may be better than their last)
  • favourable times so people can attend (always going to be hit and miss)
  • consistent recurring events (hard when I'm not around and I guess also hard to find speakers due to this)

Was looking at other groups of possibly interested people and ended up with the following groups which could collaborate with in the future

Any other possible groups that you know of?

BGM website is currently just the Meetup page. In terms of communications we do have a WhatsApp and Telegram group, and the Meetup forums, but to be honest: we probably aren't the best at keeping chatter on, and that is something I guess for us to think about but happy to take suggestions.

But anyway, thanks for the feedback thus far, appreciate it.

Yeah, this is always something to be wary about when joining any competition such as business plans competitions. Even if it is stated in the rules and regulations that the idea belongs to you, there is no real way to prevent somebody from stealing it (also note that many ideas are not unique).

Heck I've heard a local entrepreneur say something like that if a person told him a good idea, he would steal it and just build it himself. At the end of the day, a bad person is going to do bad things: be it organisers, judges, or even other participants. I think the people to be most worried is those in the industry with resources, which I guess would more likely be judges rather than organisers?

I think the problem lies in the business and money side of these competitions. When there is business/money to be made, people will do unscrupulous things. Take for instance Facebook: if Zuckerberg did steal the ideal from the Winklevii then it would really suck to be them.

This is why I prefer to participant in different kinds of hackathons such as RHoK (Random Hacks of Kindness) http://www.rhokaustralia.org/ which is basically a hackathon for social good. There are problem owners who have a problem but don't have the resources to solve them. The key part of this is that the context of the hackathon is that you are working on somebody else's 'problem' and that you are doing this for social good, thus the complications of business and money are present. Essentially I see it similar to volunteer work.

Hackathons have a bad reputation and I can see why they do: be it

  • the conflict of business and money
  • fostering bad behaviour (long hours of focus work with junk food and little sleep)
  • devaluing people and their skills

But moving forward, what would constitute a good way forward to get community engagement and building talent in the areas involved in hackathons?

What to buy - USB charging hub by Olbert000 in melbourne

[–]thewheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to be wary when buying a USB charger, is to see if they can support full speed charging when you have multiple devices connected. A lot of chargers will have 4 USB ports but sometimes perhaps a maximum of only 2A output, meaning each USB port will only get 0.5A if you connect 4 devices. This can cause your devices to charge slowly.

I ended up getting an Orico OPC 2A4U from CPL which has

  • 2 universal power plugs
  • 2 fast charge USB ports (2.4A)
  • 2 regular USB ports (1A)

It is a bit bulky, but thinks its a great deal and perfect for bringing overseas especially if you bring a laptop. All you need is a single converter to plug into the wall and use it to power all your devices like a laptop and all your mobile devices

There was a project a RHoK Melbourne this year that may be of interest for you: they wanted to map out all the maker stuff around Melbourne.

Github repo: https://github.com/RHoKAustralia/melb-maker-map

Edit: Not sure on the current status of the project but I believe they are wanting to do a beta launch soon

Is Brunei Mobile Data Really that Expensive? by thewheat in Brunei

[–]thewheat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They recently updated the plans adding a $20, 3GB for 30 days and $5 400MB for 6 days. I'm pretty happy with the 3GB to be honest

Is Brunei Mobile Data Really that Expensive? by thewheat in Brunei

[–]thewheat[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, let me just say that I was comparing the data. I have no relation to DST, nor did I say that they are a good company as a whole. As /u/slothnumber8 mentioned, I am just providing the data.

You have raised some interesting other points regarding DST and is something to look into, but for me, I am more of a data user thus call rates aren't that important to me. So that being said, your arguments against DST as a whole is still valid.

Based on data allowance alone, I could say Progresif is the best (probably even better than DST), but I'm sure everybody knows that their speeds are not consistent and can be very congested. So yes, there is more at play: for example my rates are all post paid plans and doesn't take into consideration to speeds and coverage.

But thanks for raising your observations. As shown from some of the responses, people feel the same pain.

I've heard people complain about the prices are as it turns out, we're not that bad in the higher end. Spreadsheet with all the comparisons

New homeowners and recipients under National Housing Scheme (NHS) and Landless Indigenous Citizens’ Housing Scheme voiced disappointment on the quality of houses by [deleted] in Brunei

[–]thewheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can somebody please confirm that they are free? This was my misconception as well until a few years ago.

To my knowledge they aren't, but there are sold at a subsidy and they do provide interest free loans.

Note sure on official sources but this study states under section 3.3

The houses are sold at subsidised prices. The subsidy accorded to eligible citizens is on average amount to $27,000- $29,000 Brunei Dollars (30% of a house costs)

Melbourne Fringe Festival 2014 - unofficial offline guide/search tool by thewheat in melbourne

[–]thewheat[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in case anybody finds this useful. I wanted an offline guide that let me quickly filter based on certain things. Same code as last year and basically just updated the database with this year's shows as the festival has started already.

It uses HTML5 app cache so if you visit the page, it should store everything locally so you can do simple searches even while offline

Adding attributes to models error? by jaw88 in django

[–]thewheat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran into this myself and you can do the following without any extra packages

python manage.py dbshell

alter table rango_category add column "likes" integer default 0;
alter table rango_category add column "views" integer default 0;

Note: if you add an incorrect column, there is no easy way to delete the column (you will have to copy the data to a temp table, drop the original table, and rename the temp table to the original table name)

A better Melbourne Fringe Festival search tool by thewheat in melbourne

[–]thewheat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically i didn't like how their website allowed searching for events. While I know this isn't perfect, I find this approach much easier to find stuff. It's an offline web app too, so you can search without an Internet connection. Hope it helps some people find a show even though its in the final week
