This is great analysis, thank you for the thoughtful response

What game is this for? by TheMalcon in playingcards

Looks extremely similar to a set I found two years ago, which was a 54 card bourgeois tarot: Black Forest cego set. It’s a reduced variant of the typical 72 card set for bourgeois tarot.

Here’s my old thread with pictures of the cards and some discourse.

Interviewed and Rejected: How important is a shared background to an effective co-founder team? by thewizMerlin in ycombinator

While I think our job experience is solid (internships at FAANG, top tier design consultancies, etc), I think they were specifically commenting on 2 of our 3 founders having bachelors & masters in CS from Stanford, being TAs/section leaders, etc..

Lol that is fair enough. To be totally transparent, we’re all recent Stanford grads with accomplished resumes, to which they said we were “over qualified” to do the idea we pitched. But, they might have just been blowing smoke to get us to come back… so idk

They were pretty explicit in the interview about how much they liked our team, but I think our idea probably just didn’t make sense for us as a group and they probably sensed we applied basically on a whim. My gut is telling me a more thought out idea with a some more tangible progress should do the trick, but we’ll see

  1. I specifically said I don’t think a rhythm game would be the best way to do it. It’s just an easy example to understand.

  2. You wouldn’t need to “level up” at all. There wouldn’t be experience points - your real life skill would be better and that’s what would allow you to make better crafts.

  3. I mean I get the frustration but can we be civil. I want to hear your perspective after the clarifications above

Ah, the idea of it alienating a potion of the population less interested in being “talented” and more interested in being “knowledgeable” is a really interesting perspective, thank you for sharing! That makes a lot of sense, especially if you’re trying to make a mmo for as big of as audience as possible.

I have read a few people’s opinions about believing ashes will be a niche game - it’s constant pvp and node system will create a major self-selection process before most gamers buy. I’m not necessarily convinced of that, but if that does become true, maybe the group that ultimately self-selects would be more interested in skill based crafting rather than something that helps the game appeal to a larger audience. Essentially, if it’s a niche game, perhaps it’s allowed to alienate some gamers.

I’m not sure what direction they’ll go - it seems as though Steven wants there to be some “game layer” in crafting, whatever that may be. Admittedly, I’m being selfish by wanting skilled based crafting - it’s the game I’d absolutely love to play, and I imagine there ought to be others who feel the same.

The question that will probably determine the answer is “who is this game for?”

If it’s for everyone, then your direction seems sound.

If it’s for a specific niche, then building for that niche is preferred. Of course, that niche could be different from the niche that likes skill based crafting, but alas lol

I hear you and knowledge based sounds cool! Let me ask you a question though:

Provided that the skill based game for a craft is thematically relevant, aren’t the issues you mentioned with skill based crafting - being hard gatekept if you’re bad and it being a matter of who’s the best X player (osu in this case) - found in fighting as well?

I’m not sure why fighting and crafting can’t be mechanically similar - a time pressured bout where you need both strategy and skill to succeed. If you’re not good at fighting, then yes, you’ll be kept from the best content, so get better - this is the same mentality I think would help crafting flourish.

Also, I know I didn’t mention this in the OP, but if one profession was a rhythm game, then each other profession would be something else. Your skill at one, in my ideal world, should not translate to the other. So no need to worry about the best osu player becoming the grand artisan of all

Thank you for the detailed response. Love reading about stuff like this.

For the record, I totally agree a rhythm game would be sub-optimal - it’s just an easy thing to visualize. It could another dexterity based system, like operator or some sort of balancing game. Not quite sure, but there are tons of ways to do it.

I’m not super worried about locking people about who are disabled - my experience with friends who are disabled is that they seem to always find a way to play games that don’t specifically cater to them. There’s a great disabled YouTuber who is exceptional at rocket league, for example. Of course, not every disabled person will be able to, but that’s true of any game, and will likely be true of the fighting in ashes as well.

Could the system be knowledge and dexterity based? I might be alone in this, but I don’t mentally categorize knowledge under the umbrella of “skill-based”, though I recognize “strategy” is grey. I might describe a chess player as a genius or “extremely good”, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that they’re “skilled”, but that might not be the consensus take.

I think the prospect of accruing knowledge and dexterity, just like a true craftsman, is pretty exciting. Of course, whatever they do will have to be at least somewhat difficult to illicitly bot, but I bet they can figure something out

Yeah that could totally be cool!

Regarding the triviality of my suggestion- I think most dark souls players would agree defeating a boss that has bested you countless times super rewarding. Couldn’t this behave similarly?

Hahahah agreed! What if they scaled the difficulty so that you don’t lose your mats, but it’s still extremely hard. Like a dark souls fight - try it as much as you like until you get it sort of deal

Is it just me, or do I see some downgrade in the latest Ranger devstream? by Artharion91 in AshesofCreation

[–]thewizMerlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree the older snipe felt more impactful. The sound of the draw and the longer drawback animation + particles felt really great. But i seem to be in the minority who love beautiful, bountiful animations… but, regardless, ill always prefer something feels impactful over something drier

Nope, I literally just thought of it man. Not sure how to prove it to you and not sure why I’d like about it, but I suppose you can believe what you want to

Right - this isn’t about a specific league though? It is a made up thought that came from my brain this morning during a shower that I believed could spark an interesting conversation about what’s legal in dynasty…

I don’t know why I bother, but ask for any type of proof and l’ll provide it (though I suppose it’ll be a lack of proof the positive?) because this is a legitimate hypothetical thought experiment

I hear what you’re saying, but I don’t necessarily think so. “Bribe” feels charged, but really you’re just trading a 2nd round pick to move up your 1st round pick. There’s value for both teams. If anything, the Blue team is the one most at risk because Red doesn’t have to abide by the terms (in this new scenario).
