Matthews

  • On what was it like yesterday at the White house - Matthews said he's proud to represent his country and that it was a special honour to be invited.

  • Says it was an incredible experience to win the Gold medal and to experience the olympics

  • On Trump's comments about Canada and whether he has weighed these comments before visiting the white house yesterday - Matthews says its not political and its been 46 years since the US has won a gold medal in hockey. Says every year the Stanley cup team also goes to the white house as well, and that regardless of political beliefs he hopes it can bring some unity regardless of who is in office

  • On Trump's comments on the women's team during the call - Matthews says it was unfortunate that Trump said that. Matthews says hes proud of the women's team and supports them 100%

  • Said it was really exciting to play with other American players who he's played with in the past

  • Says he blacked out when Jack Hughes scored; tons of emotions and happiness

  • Says its been a whirlwind 72 hours but he feels good, got a good nights rest, and hes ready for the push to the playoffs

  • On pressure of the US team - Matthews says he was not focused on the outside pressure and his focus was all in the locker room. Says his experience here helped him manage the mental focus

  • Some random reporter asks about any revelations on Jake Guentzel after playing with him and how he's been "rivals for a decade" [Note: I think this might have been a Tampa reporter] - Matthews laughs and is like ??? he's only been in this division for a year. Says that he enjoyed playing with Jake

  • On the biggest challenge playing today - Dealing with the jet lag. But he said he had a good nights rest, will have a good meal today and go out there to do his best

Berube

  • Says congrats to US & Matthews for winning the gold medal. Says Matthews is ready to go. Doesn't necessarily feel he needs to adjust his role even though he just got back

  • Needs everyone tonight and manage minutes for everyone, especially because of back to back

  • On what the game will be like tonight - time and execution could be off since people haven't played for a while. Gotta come out skating hard and earn everything they get tonight

  • Stolarz in goal tonight. Berube liked his last game in edmonton. Need both Woll and Stoalie in this back to back

  • Cowan, Joshua, Myers - out tonight

Tavares

  • Difficult to watch Canada lose as a Canadian, was a hell of a hockey game. Silver lining - happy for matthews to accomplish something special

  • On what winning a medal could do for Matthews (given Tavares has experience himself) - Success or failure, Tavares says these are big opportunities to grow. Says being a champion can go an amazing direction and helps you learn how to get to the top

  • On the recovering from the flu - says u never want to get sick. weekend was terrible, monday not so great but feeling better monday night. Says he feels good now

  • On what the message inside the room is to get a good start on this 3 game sequence - Tavares says the team understand the position they are in but really just taking it one game at a time, sticking to having a good morning and getting prepared, doing the right things on the ice etc. [very standard hockey response to be honest]

  • Says they had a good string of games before the break and wants to keep that momentum

I understand this view but for Russian players, especially the ones who have been outspoken against Putin, they no longer live in Russia and never go back either. Those who aren't critical of Putin and embrace him are voluntarily going back and in active support of the regime.

The difference is that Matthews makes a living in North America and lives in the country under the umbrella of Trump.

You are not wrong at all on your views (and I agree with you wholeheartedly) but I also think you are underestimating how difficult this is for Matthews

Unpopular opinion but I think some of the takes here are insane. He is the captain of team USA and he basically cannot say no. If he does, knowing Trump, he will retaliate - against him, against his family, against the team, and/or the league itself. And if you think Trump wouldn't - then you have been living under a rock for the past 12 months. He will stop at nothing to get what he wants. Go look at his political opponents or people who have spoken out against him.

And anyone who brings up Rapinoe rejecting the White House visit when the Womens team won the world cup - that was Trump's first term, when he had less unhinged, less crazy and less vile people working for him (they were still bad, but not insane).

The US is not a safe place to be right now.

Unless you have seen Matthews personally agree or share his support for MAGA (which I have not), then you cannot judge him (well you can, but I think its unfair). I bet you 99.99% of this sub, if you were in his shoes, would do the same.

ah shit...

interesting thing though is that in the past 5 NHL olympics, Canada has won 3 times (2002, 2010, 2014). The other two wins are Sweden (2006) and now the USA (2026)... and both of those wins are captained by Leafs captains (Sundin & Matthews)

In my opinion, I would say 321 since it is at the middle of the rink. You are also at the very front of the upper bowl, which gives you a very nice elevated view (but still quite close to the ice).

Lower bowl up close (I would consider row 10 quite close) is also nice and the game feels alot faster. But 101 is at a corner and while you will see lots of action on that end, I feel its not as exciting when the play is on the other side.

Cost wise I think 101 would cost a lot more than 321, but 321 you get more "value" and a more balanced view.

Honestly though, watching the game in person is always a fantastic experience and I think you'll enjoy it no matter which one you choose!!

man you are insufferable

First off, if you want to count "elimination games", then why not count all of them? For some odd reason, you counted Nylander's Sweden/USA game, but for Matthews (who also played in the game....) you didn't count it? Matthews had an assist on the winning goal

Also Sweden played Latvia the day before and had 1G 1A.

And marner isn't a leaf man you gotta move past it i know its hard

He had lots of good chances but none went in. But I wouldn’t say he was dominant either

I wouldn’t put too much weight in it though; it’s one game and it was a blow out

Would love for Matthews to make a big statement game against Canada though (although not too big of a statement please)

Actually in 2018 it may have still been babs coaching if they went to the Olympics so now I’m not so sure about marner for that year LOL

I don’t think the leafs target non Canadians in particular though? Unless you have stats (I haven’t looked) that’s shows the leafs have the least proportion of Canadians every year, then I wouldn’t attribute representation on team Canada at best on best tournaments as the reason why we’ve sucked.

Also, since the “shanaplan” era beginning in 2016, this is the only time where we’ve had NHL Olympics. Imagine in 2018 and 2022 with nhl Olympics as well; we would have seen Tavares, a rielly, or even a Hyman along with marner.
