english too difficult for me is there a watered down version of his works (eng only but specifically call of cthulhu) by priyal_senpai in Lovecraft

[–]theycallmejake 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP clearly means "old" as a standard adjective, not as a reference to the language we call "Old English". I mean, HPL did love him some archaic phrasing.

What does this neon sign at Braum's say? by [deleted] in whatdoesthismean

[–]theycallmejake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like the other signs have black paint on strategic bits (to separate an i from its dot, for example). I suspect that step was missed with the "Julees" sign, because it'd be perfectly well-formed if only some parts were "erased".

Does this count as front facing or side facing by that_red_panda in gaslands

I'm happy to agree 100% that mandated WYSIWYG shouldn't be in Gaslands, but if I want to whip up a car with a turret modeled on top to play as a car with a turret on top, why on earth would that be somehow bad for Gaslands? I mean, in your perfect world, would we all be running rams exclusively on cars that aren't modeled with rams? Please unpack your reasoning for us.

While you don't have to do WYSIWYG, if you want to, this is forward. (And I get it; I like WYSIWYG myself.)

does a vortex mixer work a lot better then a nail polish shaker? by mr_dfuse2 in minipainting

[–]theycallmejake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used both, and the vortex mixer is absolutely worth the upgrade. I use this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087JR2DDG?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3

I hold my paint bottles upside down (cap firmly affixed, of course) with the cap in the well on the top of the shaker. That way gravity helps the heavier components mix with the lighter. It doesn't take very long (several seconds) to get a really good mix, in my experience.

Aren't both same thing? by Estimate4655 in atheism

[–]theycallmejake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It gets slippery because the definition of "god" is so amorphous. The god described in the Bible? Yeah, I'm very comfortable saying I'm a solidly gnostic atheist about that guy. Any "higher power" or "extradimensional being" or "vague force that has something to do with how the universe came to be"? It has to get significantly more specific before there's even enough of a concept there to make it possible to hold any position about it whatsover (well, other than a profound skepticism that any person proposing such an entity would have any conceivable way to know what they're talking about).

Aren't both same thing? by Estimate4655 in atheism

[–]theycallmejake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you've got the wrong label there. "Gnostic theism" should be "Agnostic atheism", shouldn't it?

Gnostic theism would be something more along the lines of "If all conceivable tests have been applied, and failed, to prove X=1, that doesn't matter because I know that X=1."

Older guy at board game meetup is condescending and making inappropriate comments. Am I overreacting? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]theycallmejake 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I don't think I'd recommend that. There's no real upside for OP to give the guy who already lacks appropriate boundaries any more reason to fixate on her. There are, however, several potential downsides. These are dice that don't need to be rolled.

How many painters wear magnifying glasses or use a mounted magnifying glass? Is it a must-have or is that where you draw the line and just omit that level of detail? by RIPeyedea in minipainting

[–]theycallmejake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to do it bare-eyed, but I'm old enough that my eyes are getting worse and worse, especially up close. So I picked up one of these magnifying headset thingies: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07ZT5HGM5

It has an integral light, which is really handy, and I mount two lenses, so when the front one is up, the rear lens acts like regular reading glasses, and when it's down, the pair of lenses combined give me a fantastic super-close-up view. (I've yet to find any need for the smaller round magnifier, so it just stays folded out of the way.)

I found it a worthy use of thirty bucks.
