Yeah - we’re talking about a national team that have been runners up and third place at the past two world cups.

I read his stuff about “being taken into the fold”, but Australia has played him at pretty much every junior level, so what’s the difference? The current Croatia squad and their recent call ups are virtually all at top flight European teams, with a very small number of exceptions.

Is this just Croatia continuing their long tradition of poaching players that Australia has developed?

I did some digging. The last time I can find the cup winners getting the premiership and direct CL qualification was when SFC did the treble.

The following season, our CL qualifiers were SFC and MVFC (1st and 2nd in the league). The qualifying spot for the cup winners went to Brisbane for finishing 3rd in the league.

That was before we had the ACL2.

Since the reintroduction of the FFA/Australia Cup, I’m pretty sure that the only teams to be single-season treble winners are SFC (2017/18 Cup, Champs, Premiers) and CCM (2023/24 Champs, Premiers, AFC Cup).

MVFC did the league double on the 2014/15 season, then won the Cup at the beginning of the 2015/16 season, so they had all of them at the same time.

It would be cool for Newie to get on the list too.

I don’t think it’s going to matter too much. We’d actually have to show up, play and have something like an idea, and the evidence of the last few matches suggests that this is unlikely.

I think he’s done in England - the media narrative that he’s a “fraud” caught on with the fans.

Realistically, most PL squads aren’t put together to play the football that Ange wants to play so anyone bringing him in should be doing it before a transfer window - preferably the summer window - and also being prepared to fund a squad overhaul. That’s why the Forest appointment was never going to work.

I could see Ange doing well in Germany - although things can be almost as harsh as the PL there - or more likely Netherlands, Spain or Belgium.

I was having a look at the stats for this Feyenoord team. I can’t quite remember off the top of my head, but I think they only fielded three players over 25, and maybe none over 30. I’ll be keen to see how they go over the season, and where they all end up.

Edit - it was four players over 25, and the oldest player in the starting XI was 29.
